>The syncing up is a myth

It is not a myth. According to the book The Chemistry Between Us, and my own personal experience as a period-having person, cycles do sync up. You will sync up to the dominant female in your group if you live together or are very good friends, but it doesn't always happen.

Phantom periods are a thing. I do not know what causes them at all. It could be due to the fact that you are on estrogen, and your body is starting to think that you were born female, or it could be something similar to a "hysterical pregnancy" where the mind plays tricks on the body. Does anyone have any information about phantom periods, from a scientific source, a book or article?

I was under the same impression that eye contact was a dominance/aggression thing too.

Maybe it is one of those thin line between love/hate things--that the "surge" triggers their action response which could make an individual dog (or person) pursue affection or aggression (hunting or defense).

In humans, oxytocin facilitates pair-bonding and is released during the act of coitus and childbirth by cervical stimulation in females. It is also what is given to induce labor. Same chemical, same physiological region, different results/reasons.

There is an interesting book called "The Chemistry Between Us" by Larry Young that discusses the neurochemistry of attraction and bonding in humans and some animals. I found it interesting (and the audiobook version is well read). It goes into a ton of detail about different neuropsychiatric tests using it.

Each one of these books has had a big impact on me, as a side note I'm have become a big fan of audible since I normally have a hard time sitting still to read, so I'd recommend giving it a try if you never have. You'll be surprised how much of a book you can comprehend while listening to it as do you other random chores and stuff throughout the day.

Isn't there a (unproven) theory regarding cervical stimulation, the proceeding hormonal rush that accompanies it, and then subsequent orgasm leading to (female) pair-bond formation?

I never really followed up on the theory from this book.. But it made a lot of sense. I believe it was the main unique hypothesis of his he tried to forward in the book.
