Amazon is going to be your best option. There are no large retailers that carry them (unless somehow you get really lucky) and most used shops only have the American '98 out the ass, but some will carry Godzilla 2000 or the occasional Final Wars (from my experience, they're still kinda rare).

The most popular starting point is usually [the Godzilla Collection] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Godzilla-Collection-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374173466&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla). It includes 6 of the Showa series and is a great deal considering the price.

Godzilla VS. Biollante is DIRT cheap and is a really good movie from the Heisei era IMO. The rest of the Heisei series can be purchased as double packs for a reasonable price. However, Godzilla '84 (the 1st of the Heisei) has never been released on DVD outside of Japan.

After that you can pretty much collect the entire Millennium series for a reasonable price. None of them are in rare status and you should be able to pick them up with ease for less than $10.

Other than that, there are some OOP DVDs from the Showa series that are 1. extremely hard to find or 2. really expensive.

A few films I would check out:

  • Terror of MechaGodzilla is one of the best Showa films. It has an amazing soundtrack, and has an interesting story and a cool 1v2 battle with Godzilla, MechaGodzilla, and the newcomer, Titanosaurus, who has an amazing roar.

  • Godzilla vs Biollante is one of my favorite as well. Biollante may look like an abomination, but they make the creature seem "beautiful" in a sense, maybe precious is the better word. The story is very good, and the Biollante "suit" is really convincing even to this day. The human characters are interesting as well.

  • Godzilla vs Destoroyah is...really, really good. I wouldn't watch this one first, leave this one as one of the last ones you want to see. Very emotional story, very dark, and not really uplifting in the slightest.

  • GMK All Monsters All-Out Attack: Fantastic film. Godzilla is the villian this time around, while King Ghidorah, typically a villian, is considered a good kaiju. Good effects, a scary Godzilla, and a well paced story.

  • Godzilla 2014: A good film to start off with. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but it's a good start regardless.

  • Godzilla 1954: Obviously

    Films I would avoid:

  • Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla: This film has horrible pacing issues and a story that isn't interesting. While I found SpaceGodzilla interesting in the games, he isn't interesting at all in the film.

  • Godzilla vs the Sea Monster: This movie is just...meh. I sometimes forget it exists.

  • Godzilla vs Megaguirus: Another meh film. Megaguirus is a cool kaiju, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Films that you should watch with friends for some laughs:

  • Godzilla All Monsters Attack: This film is all over the place. It really feels like a film that had a production team with a motto of "Hey, why not? It's not like we're trying"! It's hilarious on how weird it is.

  • Godzilla 1998: Yeah, this film is basically nothing but the usual 90s cliches we've seen before, now with more Godzilla, sorry, Zilla. Most of the Simpsons cast is in it though, so that's a plus...right?

  • Godzilla Final Wars: I don't think I should say much for this one. The craziest Godzilla film you will ever watch.

  • King Kong vs Godzilla is great for the sole fact it's King Kong vs Godzilla, East vs West. It's not the best in terms of story, but it's cool to see both of them on screen together for the first...and not last...time.

If you need help finding these films, here are some links for some packs on amazon that can fill up your collection pretty quickly.

  • Godzilla Collection (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • The entire Millennium series, with Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • Some Hensei films, and Mothra films (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Destroyah-Spacegodzilla-Ghidorah-Rebirth/dp/B013P6PEUG/ref=sr_1_12?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-12&keywords=godzilla)

I hope this helped in some way. Have fun watching them. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

EDIT: I should add that Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon are two films that are great to watch with friends as well.

EDIT 2: Heck, watch all the Godzilla films with your friends, each one has something special to enjoy.

For movies 1,2,4,5,6,10 and 15.

There is a box set on Amazon, although I think it is out of print now:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VXWK86/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1503538349&sr=8-17&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=godzilla

Movie 3: King Kong Vs Godzilla is Americanized Version only.

There is a box set for the the movies made in the 90's and early 2000's but they are English dub-only except for a few

u/ON3i11 · 3 pointsr/GODZILLA

the 4 DVDs on the left are all available in this box set.
More info here.

Edit:
The GvKG / GvM BfE double pack can be bought on BluRay

The GvSG / GvD double pack is a unique pairing though. Both movies are available on Bluray but they are paired with other movies. Spacegodzilla is paired with Mechagodzilla II here, and Destroyah is paired with Megaguirus here.

u/Sketchy19 · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

I think this and this are a great way to get your collection started. If you are looking to do Blu-Ray these double feature bundles are good too. Then just hunt down the rest. This one has a lot of the earlier ones. I've purchased individually because the sets weren't always around, I'm thinking of upgrading to blu-ray but i still love running across the ones I'm missing in places like thrift shops. Anyways. Good luck.

I'd recommend this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VXWK86/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1499100147&sr=1-10&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

or this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NPYKTP4/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1499100181&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=gamera&dpPl=1&dpID=51r648gOXfL&ref=plSrch

That eclipse set is really interesting as a historical document of how the most prestigious film company in Japan dealt with the rise of Honda and Tsubaraya's hit machine, but they're not as entertaining as Godzilla or Gamera. Plus that Godzilla set has commentaries from criterion level film historians like David Kalat (Mabuse commentaries) and Stuart Galbraith (essay on Seven Samurai) on why these types of movies matter.

u/Mark316 · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.

A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:

  • Godzilla (1954)
  • Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
  • Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
  • Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
  • All Monsters Attack (1969)
  • Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

In addition to the Japanese versions, all the U.S. edited cuts are included as well. However, I believe the original Godzilla is cropped to be widescreen, so if you want the original aspect ration, I suggest the Criterion release available on Blu-ray or DVD.

A good place to start for some of the more recent movies is The Toho Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 & 2. This set contains the following:

  • Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
  • Godzilla vs. Mothra, aka Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992)
  • Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
  • Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
  • Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
  • Rebirth of Mothra (1996)
  • Rebirth of Mothra II (1997)
  • Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)
  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
  • Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
  • Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
  • Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
  • Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

Full disclosure, I think this collection is only on DVD, but all of these movies are also available on Blu-ray in various singe- and multi-disc packs. But if you don't care about Blu-ray, this is a great set.

This doesn't cover every Godzilla movie, but those two box sets are both pretty good ways to start, I think. If you have questions about specific movies or anything else let me know.
u/WolfSpiderBuddy · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

I would say that depends on what you have access to, and how much you're going to jump into it. I will say from the beginning that there is no consensus on any of this, so don't take any reply as the gospel.

The most obvious answer is to start at the beginning - Gojira, the 1954 Japanese original. Many folks say it's the best ever made.

Another option would be to start at the other end, the best "modern" movies before the new one. I would recommend either Godzilla against Mechagodzilla from 2002, or its sequel, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS from 2003.

If you're ready to really "commit" to watching several movies, for the very low price of $21 you can get this boxed set from Amazon that has seven movies, including the first one (Japanese and American versions) and you'll get the classic monsters that will be popping up in the G14 sequels: Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

My personal favorite Godzilla movie is Return of Godzilla from 1984 (sometimes called Godzilla 1985 because it was released in the US in 1985). The problem is that it's very hard to find, and you shouldn't wait to jump into the movies until you can find this one.

Is it okay to enter more than one and let you pick? I like so many movies its hard to choose!

I love movies because...

So, the reason i want these is because me and my sisters used to watch them all the time and it was one of the only times we got along and had a lot of fun. It brings such good memories and we always have fun when we watch them!

Phantom opera

Robin hood men in tights

The Princess Bride

Monty python and the holy grail

(note: Regular DVD of any of those are fine, i just saw the blueray first)

Me and my mom LOVE godzilla so this would be perfect!

And these are som of my favorite movies of all time!
Moulin Rouge

Lord of the rings box set (Im looking at the used version)

And this because i havent seen it and people say its great!

Again, feel free to choose which come in bluray and which you want to get DVD, im not picky!

Thanks again and sorry if me posting a lot of them causes a problem :D

I recently purchased this set -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VXWK86/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has most of the earlier movies including the very first one!

Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Just be on a look out for the [Kraken blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-Gigan-Blu-ray/dp/B00I462XLG/ref=pd_sim_74_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q4NXP3Z44W4ZJK6AP4P4) and [The Toho Godzilla Movies Collection blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-King-Ghidorah-Mothra/dp/B00IQAUO2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481679727&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+king+ghidorah+blu+ray). The prices seem to jump to higher and lower over time. It's very inconsistent, so I just checked every other day to get the best deals. Lowest they normally around for is little over $7.

For [The Godzilla Collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481679933&sr=1-1&keywords=the+godzilla+collection) I got it used at half price, BUT IT'S ON SALE RIGHT NOW FOR PRIME USERS, SO PICK IT UP.

Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.

Godzilla vs. Biollante is tricky. There are multiple sources on Amazon. Make sure you get it from [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Biollante-Blu-ray-Koji-Takahashi/dp/B00LVZK1LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481680064&sr=1-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+biollante+blu+ray). Cheap as hell.

Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:

  1. Pay for the official Japanes blu-rays (expensive)
  2. Pay for the official American distributed DVD's (expensive)
  3. Bootlegs, which is what I went with. Either get it from sumogorilla.com or showavideo.com. I went with sumogorilla, but what you should know is that only DVD's are sold here and they are all in Japanese dub with English subtitles. But from what I hear, showavideo has blu-rays with better quality, however, they cost a little bit more and in order to even view the website, you need to be a member. Sign-up is free, but you can only do so on the last day of a month and the first day of a month. Both websites are reliable.

Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.

    Good luck!

I'd say a few movies maybe, or maybe a nice figure or too. https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86 This is a nice collection, although it's missing the third movie, King Kong vs Godzilla. http://stores.sumogorilla.com/all-dvds/king-kong-vs-godzilla-dvd-widescreen-japanese-version-uncut/ (This store has quite a few uncut Godzilla films by the way).
