Honestly? Go out right now. Buy a cheap used backwards-compatible Wii or Gamecube if you don't have one already, and see if you can find the Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition (There's versions for all regions, and it can be picked up fairly cheap used on eBay etc).

While the Gamecube version does have a couple of minor issues, it works far more than it doesn't, and if you don't play this game you are SERIOUSLY missing out. I can't stress just how fantastic this game is.

You can play the GameCube version on the Wii.

I ordered a used one from Amazon a few months ago, they're in the $40 range plus shipping.

Zelda game disc including Ocarina of Time.

They actually did something just like that for nintendo gamecube. It came with the purple GC. So maybe they will if Nintendo does VC right for the switch. https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Collectors-Adventure-Ocarina-GameCube/dp/B0007W5IUS

This is what automatically came to mind for me, which doesn't have master quest.

Gamecube also had Majora's Mask, Zelda, Zelda 2, along with Oot in a Collector's Edition. I agree that the 3ds has had plenty of love from Nintendo in regards to Zelda.

Only certain models of Wii can play Gamecube games...Nintendo discontinued the backwards compatibility feature in later Wii models. If your Wii can play GC games, you should try to track down the special collector's edition disc with both original NES Zelda games, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask all in one (https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Collectors-Adventure-Ocarina-Majoras/dp/B0007W5IUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501535879&sr=8-1&keywords=zelda+gamecube).

Wind Waker was also released on the GC originally. I personally didn't like it but I'm in the minority of fans there.

Twilight Princess can be played either as a Wii version or a GC version...I honestly don't have particularly strong preferences either way but I hightly recommend TP regardless of which version you want to play.

Skyward Sword is the only pure Wii Zelda title. I personally didn't like it but you might feel differently. It's a pretty divisive game on this sub.

Don't worry about what order to play them in. The Zelda games don't really have any overarching chronology that impacts the games in a meaningful way. Every game is basically its own separate story with a few minor shoutouts to other titles.

> if possible on the original hardware

I'd like to make a slight argument here: if you have a backwards-compatible Wii with component/RGB/YPbPr hookups, it might be a good idea to consider playing the Collector's Edition version of Ocarina of Time for GameCube over the original N64 version due to the increased picture clarity. It's the same game as the N64 version, and plays much more accurately than if you used a third-party emulator on PC or something. On the other hand, that version has slightly longer loading times when going to new areas or opening/closing the menu since it's reading from a disc instead of a cartridge, which might make a certain infamous dungeon even more frustrating since you're constantly taking trips to and from the menu there (for reasons I will not spoil here).

Majora's Mask is best left to the N64, though; the Collector's Edition version has some minor framerate drops, and I've read that there was a random freezing bug (I've never experienced it myself, but they say it happens more often if you're using the game's rumble feature, which I never did).

I definitely wouldn't recommend using an emulator like Project64 or Mupen though, at least for a first-time experience; those emulators work pretty well, but they also have some graphical weirdness, the joystick mapping feels slightly off no matter what settings/controller you use, and experience is just not quite the same...

Oh, and Zelda 1 and 2 are also fine on that disc, with some benefits over the NES originals: higher resolution, no fighting with getting 30-year-old hardware to read the old carts without errors, the ability to switch to another memory card if you want more than 3 saves, and maybe a few more things I'm forgetting. A GameCube controller is also arguably more comfortable than an NES controller, if that matters... ;)

I am a Nintendo devout. I own every Zelda. I have 100% completed EVERY Zelda.

I think Ocarina and Majora's are both excellent games. Words cannot describe how highly I regard these games.

However, I must admit that technically, they have aged somewhat and can be a bit glitchy and difficult to play in comparison to nowadays standards.

I would recommend the smoother and slightly sharper versions of these games that came on the Anniversary Collection for the Gamecube.

Also, the remake of Ocarina of Time for the 3DS did a great job of making the game a little more accessible to newcomers.

It is the best version of Ocarina of Time available now. Hands down.

However, there are no announcements regarding a 3DS remake of Majora's Mask.

(Although I personally do think it is somewhat likely that it will come near the end of the 3DS lifespan.)

Majora's mask did suffer from some poor animations, and despite being a great game, did show some signs of the technical limitations of the N64.

For example, I thought some of the animation in Majora's mask wasn't as fluid as it was in Ocarina of Time.

If these problems were readdressed for a 3DS remake. I am confident that Majora's Mask would prove to become the choice Zelda experience for a lot of the audience who never experienced it originally.

Also...
The rumors circulating recently regarding potential remakes of N64 games for the Wii U. "ReUmagined" would probably lend themselves well to the two Zelda titles that came out on the console.

A remake of Lylatwars would be unreal!!!
