Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (pick one and play the other if you like it. Also TP was ported to Wii with motion controls, and the whole game was mirrored to accommodate for that. IMO the 'cube version is better. That said, Nintendo tried for a more realistic stylization and thus it hasn't aged nearly as well as WW)

Starfox Adventures (if you liked the Zelda games, def check this one out)

Starfox Assault (absolutely nothing like Starfox Adventures. But a good game nonetheless)

Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't bother with Monkey Ball 1, Monkey Ball 2 is just straight-up superior in every way)

Super Mario Sunshine (This classic has aged like fine wine. Graphics were good back then and still hold up today, thanks to its stylization)

Congrats on the decision to play some GameCube games. You are in for a treat.

I'm probably just echoing what everyone else said, but here we go.

Fox is technically the best character in the game, but I wouldn't recommend him for a beginner personally. The tier list assumes that all players play as perfectly as possible, and the things that make Fox good require you to press a lot of buttons very quickly at very specific timings, which is more difficult for newer players. To find out which character (I'd recommend just one to start) you want to main, I'd recommend watching some professionals play matches and see if any of them catch your eye. The easiest characters for beginners to pick up are probably Marth or Sheik, but the most important thing by FAR is to main the character YOU want to main. If you want to main Fox, do it! If you find that you really have your heart set on Kirby, don't let anyone stop you! Hell, I'm from Minnesota, and our 3rd ranked player is a Kirby main. You have to play with whoever YOU find the most fun to play with, otherwise practicing won't be fun, and you'll never get anywhere.

Oh, and get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. They're practically designed for Smash Bros, and they're the only controllers you'll be able to use in tournaments if you decide to go to any in the future. Don't get a cheap knock-off either, they're not nearly as good and they break easily. Get this one, or a different color of this one. It's by far the best for a beginner. If you happen to get really into Melee, you might want to get one of the older editions of the GC controllers, as they're considered to be slightly better, but they're way more expensive. If you're using Dolphin, you'll also need an adapter. It might be a little annoying to get set up, but Dolphin Emulator's site has troubleshooting for every possible issue.

TL;DR Play whoever you want but I'd personally recommend not Fox for a beginner, Marth or Sheik would be "easiest". Get a real GC controller and an adapter to use on Dolphin.

There are a few things you can do. Firstly, finding an S-video cable will provide you with the cheapest and easiest visual upgrade. The linked version is the most common, but there are better versions available. It's said that a cable with just S-video and no yellow composite output will provide a better picture than a combo cable, but in my opinion, the step up from composite to S-video is far more noticeable than the solo S-video upgrade. Should you want one though, the best one on the market seems to be the one Monster released. The downside here is that S-video is becoming increasingly dated, and many new HDTVs don't have them. Make sure to check and see if yours has an S-video input first!

If you want to go even deeper down this rabbit hole, there is a community dedicated to getting the best visuals out of retro devices, notably the wonderful people at www.retrorgb.com. You'll find a lot of great info there, and in regards to the n64, it sounds like certain colored models were more apt for enhanced modding than the original charcoal version. Most of their recommendations center around displaying on old CRTs though, so if you really want to display on an HDTV, you'll need to really drop some cash.

Specifically, you'd need this beast of an upscaler. you'll see info about this thing on the RetroRGB site, but basically what it does is works solely to convert and upscale the SD output of the older consoles into pixel perfect HD images, with as little input lag as possible. It's not cheap, but many people swear by this device.

Last but not least, you could simply play the waiting game. There will inevitably be a successor to the Retron 5 that plays n64 games in upscaled HD the way the current iteration does. And while you wait, the GameCube, virtual console, and especially the 3ds version of OOT all have improved stability and performance overall.

What you need to get started playing Melee:

1. A Nintendo Wii (in case you ever become interested in Project M) available for about $40+ various places on the internet. Try to get the white one as some of the black models does not have slots for Gamecube controllers. Make sure the Wii has the sensor bar, power cables, AV cables, at least 1 wiimote. You also need a Gamecube Memory card so you can save the game. Alternatively if Wii isn't your thing you could purchase a Gamecube bundle like this.
   
   
2. A Wired Official Nintendo Gamecube Controller (negates wireless interference at large tournaments) available from anywhere from about $10+ Used on eBay to about $40 new on Amazon. Let me stress again OFFICIAL Nintendo controller, third parties are generally shoddy and not worth the investment regardless of their price.
   
   
3. A copy of Super Smash Bros Melee, price normally fluctuates from $30-$60 depending on site and demand.
   
   
4. A CRT television. The big ol' chunky ones. These are the only kinds of TV that do not have input delay for Melee. You can find them for free on craigslist or can buy one at a garage sale or thrift store for $5-10 dollars. Make sure it has AV hookups and a remote or a built in button to switch the inputs. Remember to lift with your legs or get a friend to help cause they can be heavy (my main one is 42" and 300lbs).
   
   
5. A Smashboards Account. Everything Smash related can be found there. Character discussions, tourny info, ect...
   
   Extra suggestions:
   
   

• Find human opponents in your area ASAP. You'll probably lose and lose badly but you learn infinitely more than playing against CPUs. Finding good players who are willing to show you the ropes is key.
  
  
• Watch this and Go Here to learn advanced techniques.
  
  
• Once you get a feel for all the characters choose the one you like best and stick to them as this will help you improve faster. This is the most current Melee tier list, which is basically a power ranking of characters. That said, do not take it too seriously, anyone in S or A tier is generally viable and even those below it are feasible if you put in the time and effort (just look to this subreddit's hero aMSa who consistently puts up amazing results with Yoshi)
  
  
• If you're not having fun you're probably not playing right.
  
  
• I strongly recommend watching The Smash Bros documentary it was created and funded by the community and gives a really in depth look into the history of competitive Melee.
  
  
• If you want to play Project M (the second most popular Smash game currently) you need a copy of SSB Brawl, a 2gb SD Card, and the hackless edition PM files.

A game I would like to try is Bloodborne . I've played a little bit of Dark Souls 3 at a friends house and really enjoyed it. I've only heard positive review on it and the gameplay and bosses looks like so much fun to play.

My favorite game has to be Super Mario Sunshine. I have so many childhood memories of replaying the different levels. I love the game mechanics and how you use FLUDD in different ways. The game just has a special place in my heart from all the times I would play it when I was a kid.

ON PC

Note: You will need a fairly good computer to run SSBM or SSBB on your computer unless you play on a tiny window size with no audio.

Things needed:

This is the emulator you will use to run SSBB and SSBM. Just download the latest version and install it

Controller: Official GC controller and the GC to compter USB adapter

The controller is a bit expensive, but going for a non-official controller is just awful. You can also use an xbox controller, but since you're playing SSB it won't be optimal.

ISOs: I am pretty sure I'm not allowed to link them, but in order to actually play the game you need to search for the "Super Smash Brothers Melee ISO" or "Super Smash Brothers Brawl ISO" and download the ISO for the one(s) you want.


After you have all these components, you can almost start playing:

• Plug in your GC controller to your computer via your Mayflash adapter
  
  
• Open the Dolphin emulator
  
  
• Click the "GCPad" button on the top grey bar you see. It has a GC controller icon
  
  
• Click the dropdown arrow under "Device" and select your GC controller. If it's not detected, hit the "Refresh" button beside the arrow or start over from step 1 mentioned above. If it still can't be detected, ask on Google. For me, the GC controller is called "SDL/0/USB GamePad" but it might be different for you (I don't actually know if it will be different. Never asked anyone else).
  
  
• After configuring your controller, click the "Browse" button on the same grey bar. It is the 3rd icon and looks like a series of black bars. Search for the folder(s) your ISO(s) and select the folder(s). Now the game(s) should come up on the main menu of the Dolphin Emulator. If they don't, hit refresh or try selecting the correct folder again.
  
  
• Finally, double click the game you want to play and enjoy!
  

Get a Wii, 8-32GB SD card (and a reader for your computer if necessary), and Homebrew it instead, download a good ISO of Melee (no URLs here ^^^PM ^^^^me ^^^^if ^^^^you ^^^^^need ^^^^^^one ) or download the 20XX hack pack, purchase a couple of gamecube controllers, and get crackin'.


CRTs can be found on Craigslist. If it's boxy and has a fat back with a glass front, it's most likely a CRT. Search terms (listed from most to least relevant):

  ASK THE SELLER IF IT HAS COMPOSITE (RCA) INPUTS!! If you can't find someone selling a good sized one in your area for a good price, contact your local school district and ask if they have any working CRTs they're about to dispose. I've been lucky enough to find a few working CRTs sitting on the curb locally, about to be thrown away. Price should range from around $0 - $50, $50 being the absolute highest I'd pay (it better have the bonuses I listed or be a Sony PVM).
  
  A good CRT size to bring around is anywhere from 13"-21". Anything larger is too inconvenient to lug around to tournaments, and anything smaller is obviously hard for multiple people to see. Bonus points for:
  
  
• S-Video/Component input
  
• if it's branded as a Trinitron (generally considered to have higher visual quality compared to other CRTs, not guaranteed though)
  
• A/V out/passthrough
  
  CRT monitors (like old computer monitors) that accept VGA input are also possible and will garner you 480p progressive scan Melee, which is a significant step up from normal composite input. If you're willing to throw down a little extra money for a speaker and do some (optional) soldering work for high quality, lagless Melee, this may be the setup you want - see this thread by Kadano if you're interested. Note that this may make setting up at local tournaments slightly more hassle.
  
  You can buy a Wii, again, off of Craigslist, at your local pawn shop, or pay extra to get it from GameStop. I paid $45 for mine. I'm sure you can find one for less.
  
  SD(HC) cards are bought at your local electronics store for pretty cheap, somewhere in the $5-25 range. 4GB is enough to store Melee (around 1.4GB in size) and your required Homebrew files, but I recommend a larger SD card if you want more Gamecube or Wii games to fit on there, as opposed to using a flash drive or hard drive + USB Loader. SD cards load games a little faster and don't require weird formatting. Make sure it comes complete - that means a power brick, A/V cords, sensor bar, and Wiimote. If a deal looks too good to be true, that probably means it's the wrong type of Wii and doesn't have GameCube controller ports.
  
  You can order smash-branded GameCube controllers from Nintendo, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, or any other major online retailer for around $30.
  
  Sometimes you get a bad egg of a smash-branded controller and they have stiff triggers, or you don't like having to break in a new stick. That's fine, you can search for OG Nintendo GameCube controllers on Craigslist or at local thrift shops. You can take a chance on eBay or Amazon, but I'd recommend testing them out in person before purchasing - used condition is certainly a caveat emptor sort of deal. If you like the stick + buttons but hate the triggers, get some triwing screwdrivers, unscrew the new controller, and slap some broken in OG GameCube triggers in. Triwings are a very good tool to own to maintain controllers in general, so you can take them apart and clean/troubleshoot them.
  
  
  Why am I recommending against a GameCube and telling you to set up Homebrew?
  
  

1. Versatility. Sometimes Melee isn't the only GameCube game you want to play! Sometimes people ask for Project M! Sometimes finding and paying for now-rare, non-scratched disks is a pain in the ass! Homebrewing and loading ISOs via SD/USB ensures you have a bit-perfect copy of the game, ready to play.
   
2. Cost. Wii + SD Card is most likely cheaper than a GameCube + working copy of Melee and gets you that much more mileage.
   
   
   TL;DR: Buy a Wii and an SD Card, hack it, download Melee, scavenger hunt for CRTs and controllers, and you're golden.

You should really consider getting some GameCube controllers and games for some good local multiplayer. Most of them are a lot more competitive than the more family-oriented Wii games.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! offers better co-op and competitive play than Mario Kart Wii.

Super Mario Strikers is crazy fun if you are willing to spend some extra time to get a good grasp on its mechanics. (I wouldn't recommend Mario Strikers Charged)

The N64 Mario Party games (Which are available at the Wii Shop Channel) are famous for being the best by many, though I have never played them myself. GameCube controllers can be used to play the game.

Good quality GameCube controllers might set you back quite a few bucks since their supply is declining. The best I could find online is here

I love playing anything Nintendo. :) My entire WL is basically all Nintendo stuff... I'm 12 years old...........

My favorite gaming memory would be playing "Pokemon Yellow". I think it was one of the first games I ever got. :) I loved playing it and having Pikachu follow me around. :)

Only certain models of Wii can play Gamecube games...Nintendo discontinued the backwards compatibility feature in later Wii models. If your Wii can play GC games, you should try to track down the special collector's edition disc with both original NES Zelda games, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask all in one (https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Collectors-Adventure-Ocarina-Majoras/dp/B0007W5IUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501535879&sr=8-1&keywords=zelda+gamecube).



Wind Waker was also released on the GC originally. I personally didn't like it but I'm in the minority of fans there.


Twilight Princess can be played either as a Wii version or a GC version...I honestly don't have particularly strong preferences either way but I hightly recommend TP regardless of which version you want to play.


Skyward Sword is the only pure Wii Zelda title. I personally didn't like it but you might feel differently. It's a pretty divisive game on this sub.



Don't worry about what order to play them in. The Zelda games don't really have any overarching chronology that impacts the games in a meaningful way. Every game is basically its own separate story with a few minor shoutouts to other titles.

This option would be a $50 investment. You could get a good CRT TV at Goodwill for less, (Look for Sony Trinitron and bring your N64 to test it.) but if you like your HD TV, this is a really good option. N64 isn't going to look that great on anything but almost anything else looks pixel perfect with the upscaler + S-video setup. (SNES and GameCube look amazing.) If you want to wait it out, this guy is developing a way to make N64 look better through HDMI and he's trying to get it produced.

For any kind of smash, even casually, it's more than definitely worth buying one. I was told this probably 100 times before I switched off nunchuck, and after a day or 2 of adjustment, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Even casually, the GameCube controller is the quintessential controller for all smash (64 included) and you should look into buying either a Smash 4 GC controller, or a GC Legacy controller (a new original GC controller). Make sure you don't buy 3rd party though, as they feel and play like literal ass and may turn you off GC controllers entirely. \

It is important to make sure any controller you buy is first party! I can't stress that enough! They shoulod have either a "Nintendo Gamecube" or smash ball on them, if they are black (unless they're made by a reputable customs maker) don't purchase them.

Awesome! Like everyone else said, to play on console, you need:

• CRT TV (cheap, pretty easy to find; HD tv's have some display lag)
  
• Official GameCube controller (the new white or black ones are great; don't buy 3rd party, they feel cheap and won't last long)
  
• First-generation Wii w/ sensor bar and wiimote (only early ones have GameCube ports/compatibility)
  
• Melee disc, and Brawl disc for PM
  
• 2GB SD card for PM. A larger one will work if you're willing to mod your Wii.
  
  You can also emulate both games on Dolphin and play online with other people at Smash Ladder, as long as you have ISOs for the games and a GC controller->USB adapter. Adapters aren't very expensive (~$15) and netplay is a very good way of practicing with people if you don't have anyone around you.

According to the link you sent me, the capture card does support S-Video. The link below is basically the same video cable as the one you are currently using on your SNES, but with S-Video added. Its a cheap test to see if it benefits you ($7ish for the cable). You use the S-Video port instead of the yellow composite port, just leave that one unplugged).

Other than that, I would look through the software and see if you can increase the resolution or quality. It will take more storage space, but look better.

I do a lot of retro gaming on actual consoles, but emulation can actually benefit you a lot as well. Emulators can actually make games look BETTER than they originally were supposed to with filters and such.

Almost any Gamecube controller will do you fine. The older ones (platinum, indego, etc.) are renowned for being the "best" but at low to high level play it won't really matter. Newer ones will take a while to break in the sticks as they'll be a little stiffer and will have a lot more rebound, but practicing enough should iron out that pretty quick (moonwalks are recommended). The newer ones have different triggers though, and they tend to get stuck every now and then. If you're willing to, sanding down and lubing them a little will make them fantastic controllers for competitive play. This is the one I use and I hear many people say it's one of the best, it's a lot more expensive then the Smash edition ones but they come with a longer cord, I'd still probably recommend the Smash one's though.

Since the adapter thing's been gone over, I'll talk about the controllers.

You basically have 3 choices with Gamecube controllers. You can either get a used one online via Craigslist or eBay or whatever (somewhat less reliable due to unknown wear on the controller, etc.), get a unofficial Gamecube controller (these will come in at around 8ish dollars on the lower side, and around 15ish dollars on the higher side, but they're all the same quality - crappy and really only good for super casual play, aka having friends that just fool around and come over once in a while).

The best option is obviously to get new official Nintendo Gamecube controllers, but they're quite a bit pricier. Nintendo Japan still makes white ones (and they have a longer cable than the older controllers we have too!) but they come pricey, at about 40 - 50 dollars since they have to come from Japan. Here is a link of the Amazon product, although I've definitely seen the price drop before. Either that or I was really tired, but yeah.

Other than those options I haven't really found any better ones, so good luck in your searching!

• Star Fox Adventures (less than £10) is basically a Zelda game with a Star Fox skin, and very fun even if you're not normally a fan of the Star Fox games.

• Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (less than £20) is an awesome Diablo-like action-RPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms world. Especially good for multiplayer, but the story is decent enough to play single-player as well.
  
  
• Phantasy Star Online (less than £20) is like a third-person over-the-shoulder Diablo mixed with some Zelda-style combat/timing, but in a futuristic setting (including lightsaber-like "energy swords"). I would recommend The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
A Link to the Past came out on the Super Nintendo (there was also a re-release, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords, for the Game Boy Advanced. The only difference is the extra multi-player game). You'll probably find a good deal online or at a local game store for the cartridge if you plan on playing it on the SNES. If you have Wii,you can buy it in the store, or if you have a softmodded Wii, then you can just download the SNES emulator and play it through that.
Ocarina of Time is originally from the N64 and is one of the most acclaimed games on the N64, in the series, and in gaming. If you want to play it on the N64, again, look online and at local stores. If you have a Gamecube (or a Wii), you could also search for either The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest, which has the original Ocarina of Time plus the Master Quest, or The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition. The Collector's Edition has Ocarina of Time, the original Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening, Major's Mask, and a demo for Wind Waker. Again, if you have a Wii, you could buy it on the online store, or if it's softmodded, play it on the N64 emulator.

If you're playing Smash only, I would recommend buying the new Nintendo controller. They're literally just GameCube controllers. Solid, reliable, and made first party by Nintendo brand new. They work with the original GameCube and the new controller adapter for WiiU. I have a set of 4 of these myself and they've worked great. It also doesn't matter which color you get or if you get the US or Japanese versions. It all works the same. The only difference is the language on the box and on the back sticker.

I'm not sure how much longer they'll be manufacturing them considering DLC support for Smash 4 just ended, so I'd get a few of them now while they're cheap. Good luck!

You so will. I just bought 2 (one for my SNES, and one for my N64) from amazon. The color separation is the best thing about the cables. On HD-TV's, the image looks especially blurred and muddy, which is partially due to the upscaling, but partially due to the N64's natively poor composite video.

The S-Video cable separates the colors much much better, increasing the clarity, and gives the TV's upscaler a better source to start with, so the quality increase in the end result is very very noticeable. It is completely worth the few dollars.

There is a lot of chatter in the reviews about people not receiving the image pictured, and that theirs came with composite and s-video, and thus are lower quality.

I bit the bullet, and received exactly what was pictured, and the quality of the cables themselves is good. The quality of the video signal is crazy-good.

Doom 64, in particular, looks just fabulous now, and I know I'm raving now, but I just can't suggest that you do this enough.

Honestly, probably not. It was a GameCube game. My brother and I both beat it, I bought it on a complete whim because the title and back of the case made it sound sweet. The reviews for the game are really good, I remember it being pretty challenging and the sanity effects were really great for the time. If you have the resources to play it, I'd say go for it. If you have to buy a system and copy of the game it might not be worth it in all honesty. I'm sure the controls are clunky making the game frustrating. I remember plenty of parts that were hard because of the camera and controls but it didn't ruin or sour the experience for my brother or I.

It probably completely depends on your tolerance for older 3D games, it's 14 years old or so now.

I didn't play a lot of GameCube games so for me, Eternal Darkness is one of the best games for the system. I haven't played it since it came out though, so lots of rose-tinted memories.

It had a good tight connection to the console. The cable was thicker than the other 3rd party ones I have used.

On the N64, this cable still causes checkerboarding. But again, looks and works great on the Gamecube.

The reason I recommend this is because the latest development builds of Dolphin have native controller support built in. This means you can just setup the adapter to work with Dolphin and then plug in your Gamecube controllers and you're ready to go with no additional setup. The controllers auto calibrate just like on a real console and you can even unplug controllers and plug them back in during gameplay and everything will still work. It's works really awesome.

I would suggest getting a Wii. Not all models are backwards-compatible so make sure you get on that is. Here is a list of different Wii models, though I'm not sure if it'll help. Which game you want to play is completely up to you. Having a Wii gives you access to all of the games except 3DS/Wii U. I can't say for sure that this is the best option since I have no experience with emulating.

You probably want to use a Gamecube controller. A good controller either has "Nintendo Gamecube" written on it or has the Smash 4 logo on it. If you can find them in a local game or electronics store, great. If not I'd suggest amazon.

The adapter exists.

The Switch dock exists and has 3 USB ports. All the game needs to do is respond to input from the adapter. It works on Android, Windows, Linux, Mac and Wii U (OS?). I'm pretty sure they can add it into a new Smash or a port without any issue.

And why? Because the fans use GC controllers and they've kept supporting it for 3 generations now. They're still making and selling SSB-branded GC Controllers.

Also, how have you been waiting since Brawl came out? There is a better Smash after Brawl, with a different engine/physics. Even for an entirely new one, people would want GC support. I don't/won't feel like buying 3 more Pro Controllers, when me and my friends all have SSB brand GC controllers.

Since you say you're not tech savvy, I'm gonna assume you'd rather not hard-mod your N64 to output a component (480p) signal. Also, N64's output resolution is remarkably low so it doesn't take much to capture good looking N64 gameplay.

What you probably want is an S-video cable (this is the kind I use). I know it says for gamecube, but video cables for gamecube, n64 and snes are universally interchangeable, so you're good.

For capture, the best bang for your buck is gv-usb2. For streaming a composite or s-video signal it's pretty much the universal standard.

On 20xx vs normal Melee: it doesn't matter. 20xx has L-cancel lights and random music if you're interested.

On stage zoom: there might be something out there but you'll get used to the camera pretty quickly, it's fairly good and intuitive

On Xbox controller: other people have you advice on how to set it up but if you're ever planning on going to an actual tournament you'll want a real GameCube controller. To pick one up for Dolphin you can get an adapter here:

Hello, I just bought RoA and I've got the same results as this using the Mayflash adapter and this controller, but when I'm on any character select screen (versus mode, practice mode, etc..), the cursor slowly moves up automatically. Yet, when I use THIS controller, everything is perfectly fine. This leads me to believe the problem is with that first specific controller. Any thoughts or comments? I could keep using the black one, but I want to use the white one perfectly as well.

Actually it's 90€... I've never in my life bought a second hand controller that I liked for any console (and I've bought maybe 15 overall), and with the recent spike in prices I can't see good second hand controllers being super cheap either.

Hold B while starting up the Wii U, you will go straight to Wii mode without needing to select anything using a wii mote, then the gamepad has a built in sensor bar (around the camera), so you can use motion controls with just the gamepad - no sensor bar required. You can also order a classic controller pro, wii classic controller, mayflash adapter with a gamecube controller, or a knock off - all of which plug directly in to a Wii mote, but let you play with a more standard control option.

My Wii itself cost me 60$ and is probably the most expensive piece. You can buy new GC controllers for under 30$ on amazon, you could probably find much cheaper used ones. I'm not really sure about the game. The SD cards are probably about 5$ although seem to vary alot from 1-10$.

I think $60 is a pretty low estimate, about 100$ seems more realistic but most of the items prices vary alot from place to place so it may be possible. Also alot of people are recommending a Gamecube to play melee. This option would be cheaper but if you want to play melee you can buy a wii and melee so you have the option to switch between PM and melee. Also if you don't have a CRT TV i would recommend getting one but they can usually be found free.

I'd just get him a Smash 4 GC controller. Some prefer the older ones, but they are incredibly expensive to buy new, and there's really nothing wrong with the Smash 4 ones. Pretty much everyone who's buying a new controller these days will buy one of these, since they're the best bang for your buck and they work just fine.

Trying to practice tech skill with lag sucks - although you probably won't realize the extent of it until you start practicing on a normal setup. I don't know how much lag your system is going to have, but just from my own experience of starting on an HDTV, practicing on a normal crt setup is soooooo much better

Wii is great! Like you said, it's already established with a big library of Wii games. In addition to that, you've got the library of GameCube games at your disposal as well. Grab a couple of GCN controllers and go apeshit have fun :)

It looks like a third party controller, while it would work for a bit those controllers fall apart really fast.

I would recommend something like this or this. While it's a bit more expensive it'll last you years and years instead of maybe a month like the third party controller will.

I'd imagine it'll be the same as the ones they're currently selling on Amazon(here). I got one of these and it does feel a little bit different, at least in the joystick(Feels a bit more rigid and solid) but overall it still feels great. It also has a longer cable. Would recommend. I'm actually glad we're getting the black controllers since I already have a white one.

It was made for Nintendo to make some easy money off of the demographic that never played Wind Waker and possibly those who simply want to re-play it in HD. It was a brilliant move on their part too since there are probably lots of people who never played it or might simply like to own it on a modern console and get that damn gamecube out of their living room already. And I'm sure they devoted relatively few resources to the project allowing them to stall for more releases coming.


And I don't even want to hear about price. Disc only used copies of the GC game sell for $40 + shipping right now on Amazon.

I am fortunate enough to obtained Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance when they released. I love Path of Radiance, but I think $150+ for a used disk without the case is a bit over priced. Radiant Dawn seems to be more reasonably priced at $60, but still seems a bit much for a 10 year old Wii game.

Given the prices, I do not blame you for your choice of actions.

Do NOT go off brand. First party controllers are the way to go for Gamecube. wind waker was a zelda game for the gamecube (the nintendo before the wii) and the wii will be able to play it! you might have to pick up a gamecube controller as well (it plugs into the top of the wii). good luck!

You can play online on a Wii using Wiimmfi, thought not many people do that.

Sorta, yeah, but if you're just starting out it's not terribly important. Wavedashing is a fairly simple concept, so even if you can't do it right now you'll eventually get it down.

Awesome, thanks. I haven't played the GBA advanced Fire emblem in quite a while, so I'm not sure how well it's aged. But that was my favorite. Other great ones were just about any one on the Gamecube, especially Path of Radiance.

While you can play melee online with Dolphin, it can be a little laggy unless you are playing someone really close to you geographically. Smash is a game where 1 frame (1/60th of a second) can make all the difference in what happens. If you plan on playing the game competitively, then playing on a console with a CRT is the only way to go. (HDTVs have input lag, often greater than 1/60th of a second and can therefore cause you to get used to bad timings)

Also, you'll definitely want a 1st party gamecube controller, and amazon has brand new white ones for pretty cheap (relatively speaking) here. Unfortunately, colors other than white have been out of production for a long time, so finding one in good condition is a bit harder/more expensive.

This will probably get buried but hopefully some of you will see it. The Gamecube was much more portable than you think. No joke, you could buy a small TV screen that was built just for the Gamecube and you could attach it to the Gamecube. The TV screen fit really well on the Gamecube but it was really small, about as wide as the Gamecube itself.

The only bad thing was there weren't batteries available to power both the Gamecube and the TV screen so you had to find two plugs for both. The TV even had cheap little speakers. One of my friends at summer camp (back in 2002 or something) had a Gamecube and the TV. We would play Smashbros Melee in a corner of the camp's playground where we could find a plug. Even when we went to field trips he'd bring the damn thing. Instead of riding roller coasters in Six Flags we'd just play Melee.

Yeah they're made by nintendo and they're like the 2nd gen or something after the indigo controllers and made exactly the same, also it's the ones the majority of top players use iirc and they're known to be better than the smash 4 ones, still it's kind of a lottery and you could get one with shitty backdashes that never breaks in or something, you can never be 100% sure you'll get a perfect controller out of the box but the white japanese ones are your best bet.

This one in particular. 1st party and the cord is longer (10ft > 6ft). Generic controllers will be ok for the most part. My friend had a few he bought off of eBay and the only difference I could tell was lack of Nintendo logos on front and back of controller, and the L and R triggers were a bit sharp. Buttons were a tad stiff but they were manageable for Mario Party. Of course, your experience will vary depending on your luck.

I've used 360 controllers without issue. I set up a PS4 controller for my friend yesterday and that also worked without issue. You'll be fine with either one, though the PS4 controller needed DS4Windows running to make it work properly. The 360 will just work with windows.

The best solution, however, is to buy a Super Smash Bros. Gamecube Adapter and a Gamecube controller.

There are no xbox 360 adapters for Wii, but there are Gamecube to USB adapters for PC. The best one IMO is the raphnet adapter. A bit more popular is the mayflash adapter, but I've heard those are not as accurate as raphnet. Mayflash also uses drivers which some people have issues with. If you need a controller the official white controllers are on sale at the moment.

Considering the games came out at the end of the consoles lifespans and have limited copies, the prices are sky high. Radiant Dawn / Path of Radiance. I actually have ISO's of both of them, tried running path of radiance on my softmodded Wii and it freezes up after every chapter so I have to reboot and reload the game every time I want to progress to the next chapter. Kinda put me off of playing it although I really liked what I did play.

Amazon. You don't have to get the original Nintendo GameCube controller, the Super Smash Bros 4 GameCube controller works just as fine as the original and you don't have to pay the inflated resale price of a used GameCube Controller. It costs roughly 30$ last time I checked.

For the release of Super Smash 4 WiiU they released the adapter, and started reproducing the original GCN controllers, only with a different face plate with the Smash logo inside of saying "Nintendo". The wire is also like 8 feet instead of the 4ft the original had.

I am a Nintendo devout. I own every Zelda. I have 100% completed EVERY Zelda.

I think Ocarina and Majora's are both excellent games. Words cannot describe how highly I regard these games.

However, I must admit that technically, they have aged somewhat and can be a bit glitchy and difficult to play in comparison to nowadays standards.

I would recommend the smoother and slightly sharper versions of these games that came on the Anniversary Collection for the Gamecube.

It is the best version of Ocarina of Time available now. Hands down.

However, there are no announcements regarding a 3DS remake of Majora's Mask.

(Although I personally do think it is somewhat likely that it will come near the end of the 3DS lifespan.)

Majora's mask did suffer from some poor animations, and despite being a great game, did show some signs of the technical limitations of the N64.

For example, I thought some of the animation in Majora's mask wasn't as fluid as it was in Ocarina of Time.

If these problems were readdressed for a 3DS remake. I am confident that Majora's Mask would prove to become the choice Zelda experience for a lot of the audience who never experienced it originally.

3rd party ain't worth it bro. Brand new white controllers with 10ft cords are being sold on Amazon for 30.90, I would definitely recommend getting one unless you want to wait until sm4sh comes out and Nintendo starts selling new ones for 25-30 bucks anyway. Oh, and check garage sales and local retro gaming stores, some will have Nintendo brand controllers for as little as 10 bucks used. But seriously, don't waste your money on third party controllers, they have inferior hardware and break down easily.

Before sm4sh came out, the original white japanese controllers would go for about $30, and they're actually the best gamecube controllers you can buy (I have one and can attest to this), but now they go for up to $65, so get that one if you're willing to shell out some money, but want the best possible controller.

First party controllers are the only route you should be taking. For the memory card, you're probably fine. This is a great buy, and it'll last you well past the time 3 or 4 of the knock offs would last you.

I was in a similar situation to you -- beginner looking to get competitive in melee -- and I also had two ancient controllers that had seen a lot of love. For a while I was using one, getting by, but then I tried a friend's new controller. Dash dancing was so much easier and more fluid.

For the first one it's usually decided by the community, so try and find someone who runs the game and see when they start/end their timer. If you cant then its generally accepted that it's when you gain/lose control of the character.


As for the second one, Lots of people use the Dazzle DVC 100 with S-video and it records/streams SD games very well.

What is the serial number on your SNES? Older snes have issues with color bleed and blurry-er picture compared to newer models. It also looks like the saturation(color) on your tv is a bit high.

2009 also seems very late in the game for a crt, so I'm wondering if theres some weird scaling or something going on causing additional noise or video issues. Also try other composite ports on the tv, 1 crt I had had visual noise on the front rca jacks but not on the back.

Mostly though composite will look pretty bad, you just don't have much to work with, basically rf with less interference. Without getting pretty involved with soldering or lots of additional equipment to output a better picture, I'd suggest some s-video cables(provided your tv supports it).

You can also try Ebay if you want, as they typically have more expensive, rarer controllers. (They also have the club nintendo controllers, panasonic grey, clear controllers, etc. you just have to look and be willing to spend extra money)

I'm pretty sure you got a 3rd party controller. The official Nintendo controllers have "Nintendo Gamecube" written above the pause button, shown on the Amazon page. The controller you bought does not have that (unless the picture is different than the controller you got). In my experience these controllers are way worse than any Nintendo controllers, original or Smash 4. For your next controller, I recommend you get one of those kind. The Smash 4 ones are a lot cheaper (~$50-60 difference) if that is a major factor.

You'll get the best picture with a s-video cable (unless you're willing to do the RGB mod). Cheap ones are about $5-10. If your TV will accept svid directly (unlikely though given that it's new) then do that, else, you should get an upscaler to convert the signal to HD and allow you to plug-in HDMI.

Highly recommend buying on of these if you want a brand new controller. They're first party, and a good price for a new controller. The cable is longer than some of the older ones. For used, I would scout out local garage sales and of course, ebay.

I picked up this to play Gamecube games on my Wii. It's got a longer cord than the original Gamecube controllers and is the Japanese version but will work on any Wii / Gamecube.

Also don't forget to get a memory card! Can't use the Wii's memory to save the Gamecube games.

Are the newer Smash Bros. official controllers a different material than original Gamecube controllers? I ordered one from here and it feels like a matte material. Basically they're the white japan-exclusive gamecube controllers manufactured during the wii's lifespan (hence their being white) but before smash 4's release.

The price for a new one has shot up a ton since the smash-branded GCCs came out (presumably because they're no longer manufactured?), but imo these feel way better than the sm4sh ones, both build quality and responsiveness-wise. Word on the street is (according to DJ Nintendo) they're also some of the best for shield dropping? At least in melee, where shield dropping also happens to be a lot tighter than in PM - not sure if this is a factor for you or not.

Regardless, if you're able to drop the cash on one I'd say it's definitely worth it and they're definitely top-notch.

The only downside is that they can in fact suffer from the "sticky trigger" syndrome, which is when pressing the triggers from a sharp downward angle/at the lower corner of the buttons will make them have a lot more resistance when sliding down, the "solution" to which is to just press them straight on instead (lol). That is, if you're hitting the triggers fairly normally, it likely won't even be a thing you'd notice - but it does exist.

Gamecube also had Majora's Mask, Zelda, Zelda 2, along with Oot in a Collector's Edition. I agree that the 3ds has had plenty of love from Nintendo in regards to Zelda.

You're probably better off salvaging the part from another controller.

This one is pretty much the best new controller you can get. The original gamecube controllers (ex.) are very hard to come by new, but if you know friends/family that has some gamecube controllers that aren't too beat up/work well, try to snag some up.

Alot of people have the same motives as you. Smash Melee is increasing in popularity and people are starting to get interested. Some competitive players own multiple controllers. Brand new controllers do still exist, and are around $30 on Amazon.

Melee is 15 years old and is currently growing faster than ever before. This isn't even a best case scenario for a video game; this is simply unprecedented.

Because of this and myriad other reasons, melee's community has become about *keeping kosher*, for lack of a better phrase. While new tech comes and goes as the meta changes, it's still been the exact same software played on the exact same hardware for 15 years. The most diversity I've ever seen at a tourney is a Gamecube disk being played on a Wii and that's about it. Even the new Smash-branded controllers that Nintendo released have been scrutinized for making shield drops easier, and this was Nintendo's best attempt at a replica of the original GC controller.

The tech skill entry barrier can only be described as unfortunate, but melee is a game that is set in its ways because every detail of it just works and nobody dares change an iota of it.

Recently, I got a Wii which is amazing. Even better, it is an older Wii that can play Gamecube games. I am currently saving up for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance which is ~$95. I am a big Fire Emblem fan, and would really like to play this game.

But seriously, welcome to the community! :D I would recommend investing in an official Gamecube controller as they control amazingly and are much more durable than third-party controllers.

Worst controller some Mad Catz controller, the buttons would always get stuck in the controller, and a part of the handle fell off, but I'm not sure when or how. Also, the turbo function is basically useless unless you're using it for a game like Mario Party.

Best controller is the White Sm4sh Controller, feels incredible overall, and, if needed, the long cord can be useful sometimes, no downsides whatsoever.

If you own a Gamecube, you could get The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest), or The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition (Zelda / Zelda II: The Adventure of Link / Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask); though you may want to shop around for better prices.

If you own a Wii or a Wii U, you should be able to find it on the Virtual Console for about $10. Wii VC version; Wii U VC version

If you have a 3DS, you can get The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for about $20.

The Smash 4 one has a longer cable, about a foot maybe more. $50 x 7 players = $350 dlls for 8-player smash (Didn't count the price of the gamepad, since IMO it's basically a big Pro Controller).

That's my case, at least. My friends and I hate playing with the Wiimotes, so Pro Controllers would be the way to go. As is, I have 1 faux Pro Controller, 1 gamepad, 4 Wiimotes, and a ton of GC controllers I can't use :(

Xbox one is the most popular control choice, followed by gamecube. One thing I will say if you plan on getting a gamecube controller, buy an official controller! Anything unofficial has a very high chance of having wonky deadzones, and in general just isn't worth the risk.

For anyone who wants to pick up a gamecube controller, these have been on sale for a long time now and, honestly, I have been recommending them over the Smash Bros edition since before those even went out of stock. The build quality is a little bit nicer.

Playing melee on Wii has no differences from on a real GameCube, so that should be fine. As for controllers, the best option is to get the new smash 4 branded controllers, authentic and from Nintendo.

Nice! I won an auction for a Intec Gamecube Screen for parts. I paid $15 and it was actually only missing the power adapter. Goodwill always has a bin full of them for 99¢ each.

You don't need to mod to play out of region games. Just use a Freeloader or Action Replay. Easy as pie.

My second cousins came over to say with us a few times and they always wanted to play my GameCube—they were around 5 and 8 or something. I had already owned a Wii so I was okay with that. One day I come home from school and my Double Dash and Melee discs were broken, and the GameCube has jelly inside the disc reader. It was around 2007 or something.

I still cry every day.

Now I don't care who comes over, their kids are not allowed anywhere near my shit. I will set up the game for them, but if I'm not home, they are not allowed to touch my games. I keep them hidden in my bookshelf far away from the living room. I also make it clear that there will be no food anywhere near the gaming area—they are all afraid of me and I'd rather have it this way than risk having anything else of sentimental value destroyed by children with no regard for property and parents who think everything is easily replaceable.

Ugh I hate how I barely have any of the games I played as a child. Games really helped me through a sad childhood, and I really wish I could have known what sentimental value they had so that I took better care of them. Nowadays I hoard everything and meticulously organize/maintain all my consumer electronics.

I've been hitting the GCN library hard since I got a refurbished one after my Wii broke. I haven't gotten a copy of Sunshine back yet, they're fairly expensive in good shape, but it's on the top of my list to look out for, along with SSBM. And for the record, yes, the Grumps are making me want to play it really, really bad.

Typically no. Especially for larger tournies, wireless controllers pose as a logistical issue. You may be able to get away with one at a local with below 50 attendees, but once you go larger than that, you'll have a hard time finding TOs that'll allow them.
