Here's a tip for people who need to be sure they'll be awake before a certain time:

Step 1: Acquire materials.

  • Full-spectrum lamp (depending on your setup, desk lamp or floor lamp) NOT a regular lamp or fluorescent

  • Timer for power outlet (available as singles or power strips)

    Step 2: Position materials

  • Plug the lamp into the timer

  • Point the lamp at your bed

    Step 3: Program timer

  • Set it to turn on an hour before you absolutely have to get up.

  • Make sure it will stay on for at least an hour.

Results: You will wake up to "sunlight" at the lightest point in your sleep cycle, when it is appropriate for you to get up.

This setup solved ALL of my sleep problems. I am in college, and I was a notorious night owl and anti-morning person. I slept through my share of classes in the first two terms before I set this up. Now I wake up bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ready to kick butt, no matter how much sleep I've had.

Slow cookers work great with appliance timers no need to interrupt a good booze induced sleep.

I think you can buy appliance timers separately and plug the machine into it somehow so it will turn it on when you want? Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-SA110-Heavy-Appliance-Timer/dp/B000DZC226

I don't know how this would work with an espresso machine though--it might depend on the kind of machine.

It seems the comments mention two hurdles to this problem: bacterial growth, and avoiding leaving it on warm for too long.

The best solution I can think of is something like this plug-in timer. This one's kinda pricey, but it's just an example (also, I'm not sure if you need one with a ground or not).

You can turn on the slow cooker before you leave for work to avoid the "delayed" bacterial aspect, and then set the plug-in timer to shut it completely off after ~3 hours of warming. You should arrive home to a perfectly-heated pot o' goodness without the pesky worry of intestinal destruction!
