That's the only WiFi device in your house? No wonder you have signal problems. You need a device with some actual RF power and replaceable antennas.
Unless you have a decent newish router already, I'd go with something like this. If you have a great router but it has no WiFi, then you're looking at standalone Wireless Access Points which can be just as expensive anyway. Ubiquiti products seem to get a lot of love here.
I'm using a SonicWALL TZ-210 router & an Onion Pi as a WAP but my situation is much simpler (and smaller) than yours.
Don't forget to consider interference from your neighbors. I live among 4 4-unit townhouse buildings all very close together so the 2.4 GHz is rather busy. This will cut down on your range too. You'll need to do an RF survey of your house to find out if you have issues. I use an Android app called WiFi Analyzer.
Are you more worried about the modem or wireless router? Most modern modems/routers are just fine. It's the wireless radio that's terrible.
I just looked at a huge number of wireless router options, and the Archer C8 is my current pick for the money. While it's a tad slower than some of the fastest routers, it's affordable and has almost no bad reviews on either newegg or amazon. (<10% 1-2 star reviews). Every other router was more in the 20-50% 1-2 star review range. (Yes, 50%!).
Here's a list of the top performing routers from smallnetbuilder, sorted by 5ghz downlink. (I decided to use that instead of overall throughput, but it should be fairly similar).

This is a great review site for networking stuff.

If you go with a good higher AC router, you start pushing even closer to $200.
But check out that website, see some reviews. A 3rd ranked in any given AC category router will be solid, but who knows, might be a good bit cheaper.

I'd go with this one
TP-Link AC1750 Wireless Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (Archer C8) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2ROH0C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AZ4OCbW7CABVP
Or

What do you think out of these two,

appreciate the help. the one you linked looks like it's $180+ here in canada
The next thing to try would be to do a factory reset of your router (save your config first) to see if that helps.
If not, then time to shop for a new one. The standard recommendation for an all-in-one is the TP-Link Archer C8. If you're ready to get your feet wet and learn more about networking and the ability to do more, then folks recommend a Ubiquiti [Edgerouter-X](https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lite/) and UAP-AC-LITE access point.
