Not the answer you're probably looking for, but I recommend you skip Wi-Fi and get a powerline adapter they give you wired speeds in situations where you couldn't normally run wires. They really are pretty amazing.

My friend has been having problems getting a stable connection on his house's Wi-Fi ever since he built his computer, even though the router is two rooms away, no more than twenty five feet. He upgraded to this just the other day finally and saw an immediate improvement.

u/FullTorsoApparition · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

I have mine connected via ethernet through a powerline adapter. My PC is connected to the router via ethernet. Another cable runs from my router upstairs to the powerline adapter, which sends the signal through my wall outlet, down to the other adapter downstairs, which then connects by ethernet to the Steam Link.

I doubt it's as fast as a direct ethernet connection, but it has less variance in the connection compared to my 5.0Ghz wireless.

Does your garage have power service and does it feed off your house panel? Look at your breaker box is there a large 30-50 amp breaker labeled garage?

If the answers are yes and yes the easiest solution will be power line networking. Something like this.

TP-Link AV500 2-Port Powerline Adapter w/ Power Outlet Pass-Through Starter Kit, Up to 500Mbps (TL-PA4020P KIT) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q29OW6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ji2Hzb5WA0SHS

They make models with wifi built in. Multiple ports, faster transmission etc.

Edit: Idk why the link in that is weird, on mobile, sorry lol

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q29OW6/ or this if you want passthrough

Budget for windows is hard to get.You can drop the ram to 8gb and the build will still do fine. The 30 dollars saved can go for a license from /r/microsoftsoftwareswap .Mechanical keyboard is also somewhat out of budget unless you avoid paying any money for windows.

I believe the capacity number is the rated speed in Megabits. If you are only using them for an internet connection and not large file transfers over a network, then the 200Mbps one is probably fine to use.

Of course if you have an internet connection greater than that then you might want one that has higher transfer speeds.

Keep in mind that the transfer speeds are dependent on your home, and the best speeds require that the adapter be directly plugged into the wall and not a power strip. Some allow passthrough like this one.

u/zoahporre · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Personally I would go powerline ethernet adapter or something similar to this one

I own both of those, and they are both very good products.

I'm not going to say this will totally work for you because I don't know all the factors that made this work for me but here is what I did. (my switch was also too far away to run a cable to). I bought this https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-Pass-Through-TL-PA4020P-KIT/dp/B010Q29OW6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1509712689&sr=8-8&keywords=ethernet+powerline+adapter and this https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1509712641&sr=8-5&keywords=switch+ethernet+adapter&dpID=41xJwvUzySL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The powerline adapter was easy to set up and in my house the outlets they are in are on different breakers and that seems fine. After setting them up, plugging in the switch, and setting it to run on wired not wi-fi there's one more thing I did. In a connection test I saw my nat type was B also, everyone said that wasn't great and it should be A for best performance so after lots of googling I figured out how to change that in my router settings.

For me I have comcast so to get to my router settings I type 10.0.0.1 into my address bar and enter the default username and password for comcast (admin ; password) then on the left there is and advanced tab and under that DMZ. Enable that and for the host set the switch's ip witch you can see in the connection test, mine was 10.0.0.11 yours will probably be different. Save that then run a connection test again and it should be type A. Whatever router you have should have something similar so just google how to set up dmz for your specific brand.

After doing this I very rarely disconnect.

These are the ones I bought.

Is powerline networking good? Im looking at this one. I know it doesnt have the highest max speed but its also a lot cheaper than some others and at best my internet is around 70/6 anyway.

Also, is there a way to check compatibility with my homes wiring? Is it common/uncommon for it to not work? Im debating between this and just a good wifi card for my build

u/dank_y0 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Nice, just bought it so it should be comming in with in this week. Product Here I hope it serves me well! Wifi is super slow man :(

u/JJROKCZ · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Could be an issue with your router dropping packets or not being able to handle the strain on it's processor from the amount of traffic gaming sends. Wired or wireless connection on your PC? If wireless try to go wired, buy a power converter if need be.

u/TheMadMerlin · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Of course, I personally have the TL-PA4020P and love it for the fact of having two Ethernet outs on it and the passthrough. But you could also go with this if you don't need those things. (Also not sure of your connection speed as they do make ones for faster speeds)

u/Cablex66 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Something like this will be better thana wireless card

Lots of options though so look around for one that suits your needs and budget.

u/BearOnAUnicycle · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

you will have to get another router or switch to a wired connection I'm afraid.

An easy way to get a wired connection without drilling holes through walls is a powerline adapter, they're not very expensive but they will probably fix your problem. Where are you from?

If you're from the US:

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-PA4020P-KIT-Powerline-Pass-Through/dp/B010Q29OW6/ref=pd_sim_147_9?ie=UTF8&dpID=31Rwqk2MEHL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1XN4FEP1XMZ4P9VWZ2Z8

The cheapest ones with one port will perfectly do it for you.

u/wavetoyou · 1 pointr/PS4

If you can, pay the extra $20 or so for a power adapter that has a plug/socket pass-through available. Trust me. For example, compare these two:

  • w/o pass-through

  • w/ pass-through

For those who happen to have a second wireless router lying around, a semi-solution would be to set it up as a range extender. There are DIYs on how to change its settings, it's pretty straight forward.

What does it say on the device's label?

It's probably a TL-PA4010

You can still get TP-LINK AV500 adapter kits with pass-through on Amazon for around $45: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q29OW6

$40 TRENDnet AV500 kit: https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Powerline-Pass-Through-TPL-407E-TPL-407E2K/dp/B009ZRBXMI

For $55, you could get a pair of AV2 1000 adapters which should also work just fine with your AV500 set: https://www.amazon.com/Tenda-AV1000-Powerline-Pass-through-1000Mbps/dp/B00S0TGYAI

If the disconnections are due to radio interference, the only solution is to use wired connections as much as possible: get powerline adapters for your desktops and consoles. Reserve WiFi for laptops and smartphones.
If you need more than 4 powerline adapters, you'll also need a switch.

u/naryasece · 1 pointr/VintageApple

Might a TPLink Ethernet over power adapter work for you? I use one at my house, it converts the ethernet connection to a carrier wave over the house's internal power. I have one connected to my cable box (by ethernet cable) in the living room and then another box in my office a few rooms down.

I bought the starter kit with the outlet passthrough, so I would not lose a wall power plug. Performance is the same as running a long ethernet cable down the hall to my computer and more reliable than a wifi connection.

u/martindm03 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I've never actually used one myself and am unsure on a good brand, but this has pretty good reviews, isn't super expensive, and tp link makes pretty good network stuff generally.

u/ITzXanger · 1 pointr/buildapc

You'll probably be okay with that powerline adapter. I haven't seen any bad adapters that don't work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sue1Zvmh8JA

If all else fails, just return it and try a different one.

IMO, you probably don't need to spend that much on your adapter. If you're running at 100-200mbps, you're probably okay with something like this [TP-Link AV500] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q29OW6) or TP-Link AV1200
