Ecobee is looking real nice now. I wanted to switch even before, as I believe that Ecobee can be controlled locally.

*edit: The Nest thermostat was literally the first smart home device I bought and what got me started down this path. A couple years of education later, I'll be getting one of these: https://www.amazon.com/TRANE-Thermostat-Z-Wave-Works-Alexa/dp/B00SYPSIRU/

Yeah, for less money something like this Trane would work without any third party services: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SYPSIRU/

There's even cheaper ones out there too, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Z-wave-Thermostat-IRIS-Smartthings-improved/dp/B01MZG4TX7/

But in my case, and likely most people, their power company has rebates for smart thermostats. $75 in my case, for gas heat, but it requires a $75.01+ thermostat to qualify, so anything from $75.01 to about $120 is actually cheaper than the $45ish one.
