WWAN and Smartcard slot take up the M.2 spots. If you don't have either, you can have up to two M.2 slots - configure it with 16GB SSD and 3rd M.2 slot. If you don't configure with the 16GB SSD, it'll only come with one M.2 slot.

Yes, you can shove a 3rd party M.2 SSD if you have the space for it (you don't have both WWAN and Smartcard installed). The T450s is limited to 42mm long NGFF SSDs (also called '2242' format) so you have a limited number of choices. The only ones I'm aware of are these two:

http://www.amazon.ca/Transcend-MTS400-Solid-State-TS128GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUU0/

Of course those two SSDs come in different sizes though.

A colleague of mine is running Ubuntu happily on a C720, he replaced the 16GB SSD with one of these Transcend ones (I think most SATA-mode 2242 M.2 SSDs are fine), from memory the RAM is soldered, at least there's a 4GB model.

Yes I did upgrade to a 128gb SSD (I own a C720P) The installation is fairly simple too. My SSD: https://www.amazon.ca/Transcend-MTS400-Solid-State-TS128GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUU0

M.2 and mSATA are different.

Transcend actually just released 32-256GB 42mm M.2 SSD's

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLTPUU0

It seems to be low in stock atm, but I'm sure it'll be more available soon. There's also no reviews yet, but I wouldn't expect problems with Transcend.

u/kaitsching · 2 pointsr/chrultrabook

hehe I think 256GB would be too overkill for me, I just want to do some programming and maybe install 1-2 steam games.

THIS should work as well right? MyDigitalSSD is actually more expensive here in Germany.

I just installed Windows, so I dont think i need to port the SSD over, just gotta install all drivers again ! :D

Anyways, thanks so much for your help! It was a pleasure meeting you and to talk to you :)

Hey OP, I'm planning on buying a cb2 (i3 4gb) and wondering if you know for sure that the SSD is upgradable?

I'm looking at this SSD in particular

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KLTPUU0/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1457097474&sr=1-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=42mm+ssd&dpPl=1&dpID=513V1qE23RL&ref=plSrch

For anyone else reading, the large SSD is mainly for a Linux install (full office suite is what I'm getting it for)

u/archover · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

There's been recent posts about this which should be available if you search.

I don't recall a definitive answer, but maybe someone will buy one and let us know.

Ok so it looks like the wwan slot is actually m.2 it is just shorter than normal but one of these should work

M.2 42mm SSD. This is the one I used. And congrats! The Dell is awesome.

u/NevilleDevil · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

It's in addition to the laptop. It's what I am doing on mine. This is the model that I have.

Edit: Feel free to ask me more questions later this evening if you're wondering how I did it.

I've seen recommendations for Transcend m.2 drives like this one, but I have no personal experience with it.

The SSD I tried was Transend 2242 128 GB it worked, BUT after awhile started randomly throwing errors from the ata controller, causing the drive to remount as read-only and system to crash. I have no idea why and it was tricky to debug as none of the syslogs were saved before the a crash. It might be a bad drive, however I've noticed the CB throws ata errors even with the default drive.

The differences being:
-Transcend Drive causes the system to freeze on error
-Default (16GB) drive recovers from error

Example from chrome os dmesg
[ 459.363724] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x3 SErr 0x40c0000 action 0xe frozen

[ 459.363794] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
[ 459.363802] ata1.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED
[ 459.363815] ata1.00: cmd 61/18:08:58:52:3c/00:00:01:00:00/40 tag 1 ncq 12288 out res 40/00:04:00:d8:33/00:00:01:00:00/40 Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error)
[ 459.363834] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }

If you don’t see any of this trash in your dmesg you might be ok, but I really can’t say for sure.

Some users using the MydigitalSSD brand have experienced data corruption over 3 months~.

I just ordered Transcend 128GB this myself.
According to the reviews runs a but warm but Transcend said they're going to fix the issue on the next update.

Thanks for the link, I think this one suits my needs although a little big in size/form factor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X5X2Z66

Also found this m2 ssd that should work for my needs 128gb if plenty for me as I don't store much data. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KLTPUU0

Thanks for posting the buyers guide again!

u/Weeman89 · 1 pointr/classicmods

That looks like a full size m.2.

This is more like what I had in mind. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-256-SATA-Type-2240/dp/B00KLTPUU0?th=1

Hmm. Alrighty. Well looking online, it seems newegg and Amazon have a few different 128gb SSDs for between $50 and $70. Would these not work?
