I wanted a button box but didn't want to spend time or money on one. So, I came up with this instead.

Nothing but good stuff to say about this thing.

I had been looking for a way to easily use my phone for Android Auto in my ND1 before I get the OEM AA or use AIO. Anyways, after searching for a good way to mount everything this is what I settled on, and so far I really like it. The cup holder mount from MX5things snapped into the cupholder slot perfectly and feels really solid, especially considering it's 3D printed. Some of that is undoubtedly due to the sleeving added on after the printing (by MX5things, not myself). The Trianium mount was super cheap, and included a base you can glue to your dash (blech). Also had two metal plates to be placed on or under the phone case. I ended up peeling up the veneer of my Carved.com pixel case and placing it there. The screwback is why I went with it, there's no press fit action for the ballhead, and instead you unscrew the feature, and then you can pivot the ball more freely or removed from the mount. With where I placed the metal disk in my phone case, and the direction I like to use it, the rightmost HVAC dial is covered while in use, but not super difficult to deal with. Driving around terrible roads of metro Detroit, the whole set-up is holding well and all together cost me much less than the Cravenspeed setup.

I debated this as well when I added an Android Auto head unit into my Element last month:

  1. The existing USB jack is very inconvenient to plug/unplug, unless a cable is ran somewhere more accessible, at which point aesthetic value suffers (who wants a cord dragged across half the dash/console)

  2. The small tray on the right at first seemed ideal, but there's nowhere to place the phone itself, unless you get a holder of some type, but there was nothing I could find that wouldn't interfere with operation of the vehicle (either too close to the wheel, or low enough to hit with my leg while driving). Mounting the phone higher again means a USB cable being run across the dash/console in some manner, and with Android Auto you don't need to look at the phone anyways.
  3. Still inconvenient to plug in, and has USB cords running all over
  4. This is the solution I settled on: You can drop a USB extension down through the front center console (straight down behind the dash where the radio is mounted), run it underneath the floor mat to the center console area. Then I added a USB plug and magnetic cellphone holder to the front of the center console. Mind the placement to ensure you don't obstruct the parking brake operation, nor the drink holder.

    I used:

Now when I get in, I plug my phone into a short ~6-inch USB cable, and then let the magnetic holder hang onto it while driving. Easily reachable, simple to unplug/take with me, and the radio is all android auto so I have no need to look at the phone while it's docked/charging.

I put a tiny magnetic mount stuck to the bottom left of the screen/glass. I installed it upside down and it holds my huge phone perfectly and doesn’t droop. Plus it doesn’t block my display or my vents.

I have a Gen 3 (2009) and use ProClips. They're a little more expensive upfront but are built extremely solidly.

Here's all of the mounting systems I've tried that didn't quite work out except for the last two.

1. Dash Mounted

I have a dash cover, so I can't suction anything onto the dash (I've heard that certain ones also leave residue). I had to use a weighted dash mount (like the ones Garmin sells), but those still slid around from time to time. I also found out real quick that they can become missiles due to having to engage my brakes suddenly to avoid a collision.

2. Vent mounts

They worked alright, but I lost a vent, and the vent kept "closing" from the weight of the mount + holder + phone.

3. Cup holder mount

Worked great if it wasn't for the fact that it was so far away from my regular field of view that it wasn't really safe to look at while operating the vehicle.

4. Windshield suction Cup

Worked quite well, I just found it a PITA to have to unmount and remount it every time I used my sunshade (plus I also had to wipe down the windows every week due to the residue the suction cup left).

5. Magnetic stick-on. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS4S89H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Works VERY well, it's universal for other devices since I can slap a metal plate on the back of said items. Also, I can pretty much slap this on any vehicle I want .

6. ProClip (This is specifically for your vehicle, you'll also need a holder as well: https://www.proclipusa.com/vehicle/dashboard-mounts/1070-honda-cr-v/2014).

Between the magnetic stick-on and the pro-clip, I prefer the proclip *slightly* better. It feels extremely solid, and my phone is retained in a position that doesn't obstruct my vision for my windshield. ProClips are a little bit more costly upfront, but they've been designed specifically for the vehicle you purchase them for. On mine it sits slightly to the right of my instrument cluster.

Looks like an adhesive mounted one. Sort of like this one. Never used that type though.

I have a CD Slot holder, since it happened to be exactly where I wanted my phone in my FB6 and, well, who uses CDs these days?
