I received my (regular) Pixel 4 last Friday and I really couldn't be happier with it.

I was a bit scared due to all the backlash it had received, especially regarding battery life... but it seems like the trend continues and smartphone reviews are growing increasingly pointless for me every year.

I was coming from a Galaxy S8 with a 3000 mAh battery, which was (rightly) praised due to its good battery life, and which didn't seem to degrade much over the course of these two years, just like Samsung claimed. And to be clear, the S8 didn't give me a single problem and I was happy with it. I upgraded mostly because I wanted to give the S8 to my dad and because I really wanted to go back to a phone with the best camera for still pictures.

Well, I don't know how well the battery on the Pixel 4 will hold up long-term... but to my surprise, right now it's lasting a bit longer than the S8 did.

Everything else is just amazing. I didn't know that an Android phone could actually feel this smooth. The 90 Hz mode feels like eye bleach to me when it kicks in... it makes using my phone so much more pleasing and relaxing. The S8 worked well and didn't lag, but the Pixel 4 is on a whole different level here. It's obviously one of those things that you can't understand until you try it for yourself, especially since most reviews aren't recorded at 90 fps and most of us don't watch them on 90 Hz screens.

Also, the general UI is so clean and tidy. I actually liked Samsung's One UI, but Google's software just feels a lot more elegant and professional. I definitely prefer it.

Then there's Android 10 gesture system, which works a lot better than I expected. When you swipe the bottom of the screen laterally to jump to the last app, there isn't a single stutter even though the whole app is shifting away and being replaced by another one. And at 90 Hz, it just feels like you're moving physical cards around as they follow your finger.

Always-On Display also looks better to me than Samsung's. It's a lot more subtle and cohesive with the lockscreen and the overall phone UI. Oh, and the "Now Playing" feature is so damn nice to have.

Face unlock has been lightning fast and super reliable as reviews rightly claimed, I just hope my bank upgrades to the new APIs soon.

Soli has been useful when I reach for my phone or want to snooze alarms. I haven't really needed to use the feature to skip songs, but when I tested it briefly, it seemed to work every single time as well. I can see it being very useful when driving my car using my phone as GPS, mounted vertically using one of these magnetic mounts.

Best part is, I haven't yet tested the camera properly... even though it was the main reason why I got this phone! I've been so impressed with everything else that I haven't really felt the need to go out and test the camera itself. I think I'll just let it take me by surprise whenever I need to use it.

I could continue listing good things about the phone, but you get the point. I don't know if casual users will feel the same as me about the Pixel 4, but I don't really feel like reviews are painting a realistic image of this phone. It's, by far, the best phone I've ever owned.

To mention a negative:

As we all knew, the peak brightness of the display doesn't seem to go as high as Samsung's, which is OK now but will probably be a bit of a bummer in the summer when I try using my phone in the beach or with sunglasses. Not a dealbreaker for me as I hardly get 1 or 2 weeks of beach time per year... but I can see that being a no-go for people who live by the coast.

TL; DR: Don't pay much attention to smartphone reviews except for very objetive measurements (e.g.: Anandtech's articles). Just try them for yourself and make your own choices based on your personal experience.

When/if you get the Viofo understand that many are reporting the quality "red back" 3M sticky pad might be a knockoff, so in high heat it could come off. I would suggest getting a standard low profile suction mount, which, depending on the mount, will allow you to rotate the camera should you get pulled over.

The G1W comes with a 360 suction mount, which is great. The A119 is fixed in the front position. The camera lens itself moves, but if you want to rotate it 180 during a road interaction or cop interaction it wont allow that.

The suction cup for my mount on my most recent G1W came off, and after it came off I noticed it was never really put on well to begin with. I used GOOP automotive, which has always worked well for me in the past (it kept my side mirror on for 3 years after I accidentally knocked it off) but it couldn't keep the cup to the mount, so you may want to invest in a better mount.

The slot used for the G1W and A118/A119 is the same. I had an old mount I got on ebay a while back when my mount broke that fit the bill. So, if you want to be able to rotate your A119 toward you for any reason I suggest getting a half decent suction mount. $8 on Amazon should fit the bill. That should work with G1W and A119.

EDIT: As an aside, if you're looking for a good phone mount, for GPS and whatnot, I highly recommend this one. It's awesome. I've burned through like 5 phone mounts until I found this one, and this thing is great. You open up the clasp and just press your phone into it and it locks on. The suction mount is a bit sticky, but it holds great. It has been a godsend for me being a road warrior.

I just use my retired Galaxy Note 2 with a lightweight lollipop ROM (liquid smooth) and this

~ mount Only $10 and free one day shipping if you are a prime member. It won’t open any wider than a note 2 but it holds securely to both the phone and the dashboard even in this 0 degree weather outside right now. Wish I could leave my phone out in the cold too. I hate North Idaho.

~ Dashcam - I use Dailyroads Voyager It uses cyclic recording so it can keep overwriting and not using up too much space. It can run in the background while I use waze, music, OK Google, etc. You can also set it to save the video when it senses x amount of G forces. Or you can tap the screen at any time to save the video… It has tons of features and the shocking part is it’s free! Since work provides me with unlimited data tethering on my phone I also utilize it’s cloud backup feature.

~ OBD II - For car diagnostics reading I use BAFX OBD2 I was literally shocked at how easy this was to plug in and pair to my phone! For close to $25 I had tons of information about how my car is “feeling” right in front of me. I’ve only tested a few but I stuck with Dash Some of the things it tells me are engine temperature, engine load, speed, MPG, coolant temperature, RPM, air/fuel ratio… anyway, my favorite part of the app is how it keeps track of my trips.. locations, statistics, where I last parked. Love it.

Things I’m still working on are getting an inverter in my trunk to power a small/cheap router and raspberry pi plus small ssd so that in the case of theft my dashcam app could save to the ssd in my trunk to catch the filthy thief. Looks like there is enough room behind the plastic cover where they keep the tire changing tools to keep this equipment hidden from sight. If anyone has better ideas please let me know. Maybe someday I will impress a nice guy ………

u/cgjjaf · 2 pointsr/crankshaft

If I could give you my two cents on this, as I just spent the whole last week looking for the less "intrusive" way to mount the raspberry screen with the case that your are talking about.

I tried a magnetic CD mount that I have for my phone and that wouldn't hold the pi, neither the magnets nor attaching it directly with screws to the pi. It probably has to do with the weight of the screen and the mount being for a phone, but also the fact that the back of the pi case comes off very easily, so you are going to have to find a way to secure it better. If you want to try the magnetic mount, I would recommend something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TechMatte-Magnetic-Universal-Smartphones-including/dp/B00V54LQO4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1521574100&sr=8-6&keywords=cd+mount, because you will be able to tighten the part that holds the magnets, so it might be able to support the pi screen.
Another thing, with this mount the pi screen is going to protrude a lot, so it won't be flush to the CD/stereo. In the bright say, you will be able to angle it as you please and it will be closer for use.

I agreed that the 2 DIN slot is the best looking way, but it depends in the car that you own and how important is your stereo to the overall operation of the car. In my case, I can't take the stereo out, as it is linked to the rear view camera and I really like that.

I did a custom install, picking up ideas from other people in the forum.

this has been my favorite case so far:

the button pressing action has been really nice--minimal resistance. the case itself is very customizable as you can use the template with any background or picture.

best FM transmitter i've ever found, and highly reviewed via wirecutter.
i don't actually own this dash mount but man, do i want it. game changer. http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00RDQVPTY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=I10BBT1M2MULXT&psc=1

if one would be blessed not to need an fm transmitter on their automobile, i really like this http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00PTZEON0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=INI8K30WP9S4L&psc=1

finally, as you start playing around with ROMS (to improve device performance as stock is pretty buggy and not particularly bueno with respect to battery life) you'll inevitably start making backups in twrp. you'll need to. those take up a lot of space. to ameliorate that, i suggest these: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00ZWN64RS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=I1YYV3CE6VXPNB&psc=1, http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YFI1EBC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

oh! there's also a pleson tempered glass screen protector on amazon for the 5x. it came in last week but i still haven't had a chance to install it. cheap and very highly reviewed.

Really happy to see Woody got himself a thumper and will be motovlogging. /u/vanguard_anon you mentioned you were looking for a phone mount and most motovloggers i see swear by these things: RAM mounts. You should definitely give those a look if you haven't gotten a phone mount yet.

Also, you probably already looked into this, but something like this would be a great start for when you do your first motovlog, specially the segment from 9:50 to about 15 minutes, that should help you set up the camera and mic so we can get a good angle and as good quality audio as possible. (keep in mind the helmet is a big variable in all this, some are just better than others when it comes to audio recording)

Really looking forward to those motovlogs, also the guy on the video, Dan, would be a great guest for the podcast and /u/DrChiz should definitly try to get him on.

Hope this helps. ^^if^you^actually^ever^see^this.

I love Wirecutter but at the same time I feel like they're not as "expert-y" as they should be. They tend to dive into things more than your average consumer, but at the same time they get criticized heavily by enthusiasts for not looking at the right models.

I don't consider myself an enthusiast for cell phone holders, but I've spent enough of my own money to try to figure things out. Kenu in general runs pretty good but its not the best either. For instance I tried their air vent holder. It's a standard holder. Nothing special. In fact with phones going glass (e.g. iPhone XS) and heavier than ever, these holders start to not work out so much. I found a better air vent holder (IMO at least) that uses two arms to grab the air vents. The higher Amazon reviews also help with my confirmation bias to reaffirm that this new vent holder is better.

The same happened with their CD slot holder recommendation. I'm a huge fan of CD slot holders, but the one they recommended was an iOttie one which uses a magnetic mount. That makes it hard if you switch up phones or multiple people switch up their phones being mounted because you need to attach something to your phone. Their previous recommendation had a weird clamp mechanism and it didn't hold the phone well. I went back to my previous personal pick which uses a straight forward spring loaded clamp.

The fact that their picks have disappointed me twice in this field makes me a bit upset. Bottom line is I would recommend those two holders I ended up liking (both the air vent and CD slot holder). Those both are better than the Wirecutter picks IMO. I would have thought a company dedicated to buying and reviewing products would probably be able to find at least the same products I tried if not better ones.

u/darkamikaze · 3 pointsr/Nexus6P

To answer your magnet question, no it will not affect your battery at all. Even compass for me hasn't really been affected but I only really get to see it used in Maps which works great 98% of time (2% when I'm stopped, it thinks I'm facing the other direction)

I've owned Steelie and the nGroove by Mountek.

Steelie is alright. It adds a bit of fun in life by making you question, "hey, is this metal?" and you test your steelie on it. This becomes a fun habit. As far as a dedicated car dock 7-8/10. Having only a small portion of your phone mounted means it can be tougher to use while docked compared to the nGroove (it will wobble here and there forcing you to put your hand slightly behind it to counteract the force). Finding the perfect angle can also be a bit tough. I've had my steelie for about 2 years now and the padding in the center has lost its grip. I had to rip the padding out and ended up replacing it with microsuction tape. Without the padding your phone will just slide down so the microsuction helped there.

I originally had it on my Nexus 4 which was quite a heavy phone so on longer drives you'll see it start angling down due to the weight. I've just recently put it on my N6P just to try it again and I haven't witnessed this but I haven't really had the chance to use it too much. I think the problem is the small contact surface the phone has with the mount.

In summary, I can't recommend it too much unless you find enjoyment having a magnet on the back of your phone (which like I said can be fun!)

I would recommend the metal plate approach just cause it adds more contact surface and the dock itself will have a stronger hold with your device. You'll have no problems of it swaying in big bumps or trouble using it with one finger since it's really secure on there. TechMatte MagGrip CD or the nGroove Snap 3

u/J4mm1nJ03 · 2 pointsr/Android

Sure thing! I have the Koomus CD-Air.

I can't compare it to any other ones as it's the only one I've tried, but it has been working fine for me with the Rhino Shield Bumper and it's been pretty stable. It'll bounce a little bit sometimes, but not enough to really affect the readability of Google Maps/Waze navigation or anything like that. Neither the phone or the cradle have never fallen off either. There are probably cheaper ones but this one has pretty good reviews, so it's what I went with.

I have a 2016 Ford Fusion for reference. It totally disfigured my little CD dust curtain thing if you care about that. I am leasing my car and I don't really plan on ever removing the thing to play a CD, so I'm not too bothered by it.

u/pbae · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I highly suggest a Ram Mount.

You'll need 3 pieces to make it work for your bike.

First, you'll need a base. I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Motorcycle-Base-Hole-Ball/dp/B0012TRIY4/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1404890887&sr=8-25&keywords=Ram+Mount

But there are other bases available. Check out what Ram has and pick which suits you best.

Next, you'll need an arm that attaches to the base. Ram has 3 different lengths available but they look like this: http://www.amazon.com/Mounts-Composite-Double-Socket-RAP-B-201U/dp/B0074WMQLS/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1404890870&sr=8-9&keywords=Ram+Mount

And the last thing you'll need is mount. I use the X-Grip which looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Universal-X-Grip-Holder-1-Inch/dp/B0055PH0XA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404890870&sr=8-1&keywords=Ram+Mount

But I use it for my cell phone and not a GPS.

If the X-Mount isn't suitable for your GPS unit, you could see if Ram has a specific bracket for your particular GPS from their website which you could find here: http://www.rammount.com/Products/GPSMounts/tabid/135/Default.aspx#/

But if you go that route, you'll need a 4th piece to attach the bracket to and it looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounts-RAM-B-238-2-43-Diamond/dp/B002KO5XVU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1404891383&sr=8-5&keywords=Ram+Mount

Hope this helps out and good luck.

BTW, how do you like the GW250? I am very interested in getting one of those.

u/forensikat · 10 pointsr/Lyft

The most invaluable thing is for you, not passengers, and that's a phone mount. I got this one and I think it's great! You need it because you need to know where you're going and easily follow directions, but you don't want to be holding your phone or looking at your lap. I did my first day (~2 hours) without the mount and then got it the next day. It was great. I'll never not use it.

For pax, I have water, mints, chocolate, and dum dums, but tbh I've been eating most of the lolipops haha! Get what you want and just be friendly. Most (not all, some people are still assholes) pax know that anything beyond a ride and friendly smile is extra and not expected.

Spigen slim case

  • Love this case! Thin and keeps me from scratching up the back of the phone.

    Rhino shield

  • Scratch and impact protection, without the fear of shattering. I backed the kickstarter for the original and continue to love their screen protectors. This is my 3rd phone I've used it on.

    Amazon Basics charging cables

  • Not worth paying the apple tax for an extra charging cable. I have one for work, and one for mine and my wife's car.

    InfiniApps CD slot car mount

  • Love this mount. It works perfectly. The magnet keeps the phone stable, and it just pops right on. My last magnet mount (Tetrax) wasn't anywhere near as easy to use.
u/silicon_reverie · 7 pointsr/nexus6

I use the Ram Mount Universal X-Grip with mixed results. If you're looking to do the same, buy the Large version.

  • Expensive, but modular. You can buy arm extensions, motorcycle mounts, and a range of other accessories to fit everything from iPhones to tablets.
  • Camera is free to record the road.
  • The Medium grip (listed above) is an uncomfortably snug fit with Shamu. If you add a case, like my Spigen Slim Armor, you'll be extending the mount fully and forcing the phone into place every time - not recommended.
  • The Large grip fits the phone and case quite well, but is more expensive.
  • Ram mounts allow some slight rotation when locked in place (+- 5 degrees or so), and this is more pronounced with looser fits than with tight ones. However, there's enough friction in the mechanism to keep it from rotating on its own, even on bumpy roads.
  • The suction cup holds its own against the Texas heat, but won't stick to anything besides glass. I've tried it on a smooth, polished hardwood dining table, a dry erase board, and a stainless steel fridge, but my car's windshield is the only spot where it doesn't fall down. Don't even think about attaching to a plastic dashboard, even if it's smooth and flat. For this reason, I've seriously considered 3D printing a longer arm for my old iOttie mount that clings to any surface you throw it against.

There's no wireless charging, either, though I tend to shy away from car chargers due to the potential for current spikes and other idiosyncracies that lower my non-removable battery's lifespan.

    TL;DR
Not the cheapest or best, but it holds the phone in place when attached to a windshield. Buy this if you like modular mounts with a good grip - it's easy to extend the length, switch to a motorcycle, or upgrade to a tablet by swapping a few parts. Look elsewhere for wireless charging, dashboard mounting, or cheap prices.

My wife and I have been using this magnetic car mount from Wizgear. They also have a vent mounted model

I was originally against them as I didn't want to stick the metal plate on the back of my phone but since I'm using a case to protect my Pixel...it's hidden.

I really like how easy it is to just touch my phone to the mount and it stays there. Since we are both using the same setup, we can mount either phone in either car. I liked this so much, I picked up a couple of these desktop stands. I've got one on my desk at work and at home. I like having my phone elevated off the desk.

A bonus use with the desktop stand, they have some decent weight and I'm able to use them with my 10.1" tablet (in landscape) without them tipping over.

Edit: Darn it! I didn't realize the desktop stand was available in a gloss black vs the chrome.

Edit 2: You keep a 2nd phone mount in your car for passengers? I've never heard of anyone doing that.

u/ImFrank · 2 pointsr/motorcyclesroadtrip

A phone mount is worth the money and such an incredibly cheap option compared to only ten years ago when you needed a garmin. Invest in a good case like a life proof or otterbox and get an x grip phone mount by ram (https://www.amazon.com/Cradle-Holder-Universal-X-Grip-Cellphone/dp/B0055PH0XA). IF you really want the best set up, also buy a good USB outlet that connect to your battery and have your phone charge while you ride. An open map sucks battery pretty fast.

As far as apps, use motion x gps road, and download any gps tracks your heart desires. Motion x gps allows you to pre download map tracks to any level of detail you like and works great on airplane mode.

Old school is nice and all but is a different experience and makes progress slower and requires much more planning. I used my phone to navigate the entirety of the Continental Divide Trail, the transamerica trail and hit about 30/50 states a couple summers back and it worked great and eliminates the need for two devices and bulk.

Cable: CHOETECH 1.6ft (0.5m) USB-A to USB-C - I have the 1 meter cable as well, but realized I didn't need that much slack.

Charger: PowerGen 4.2Amps / 20W Dual USB Car charger I've had this for a while now - close to 3 years. (I seem to have an older version as my order history says 3.6Amps / 18W.) I bought it when I had my Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and a company iPhone 4s. It shows as Charging when plugged in - not rapidly but not slowly either. I use DashClock still and it shows as "Charging (AC)" instead of USB, and it keeps up with running Google Music and Play music at the same time on long trips. I don't have the brightness jacked up, about half way, and it will charge will driving long distances.

Case:Spigen Thin Fit Nexus 5x Case I've liked Spigen and I wanted a thin case. I don't have the biggest hands in the world (reason I didn't get a 6p) so I didn't want a case that added a lot of bulk.

Screen Protector: ANSOTT LG Nexus 5X Tempered Glass Screen Protector I rolled the dice as there are a bunch out there and so far it has been fine. I see 2 chips in the protector from what I assume are drops I caused.

Car Mount: Ipow Long Arm Universal Windshield Dashboard Cell Phone Holder This is to replace this mount which I had for about 2 years. The design of this older one used some springs and plastic grooves that the 2 arms slid on and it eventually wore and cracked. The only problem with the new one is that due to the power and volume buttons on side, it has to be mounted in one spot to not hit any of the buttons. The grip is strong and the arm is nice as it's closer to me than the old one - I don't have to reach as far. This plus the new Android Auto update should make trips nicer.

I just got this one, it's a magnetic mount but it's really strong and it clips onto my vents pretty well. The only thing I dont like is that you cant tilt your phone but luckily my vent is in a nice spot. the second link is one i found after, you can tighten the clip on that one and tilt your phone which is nice.

I've used AIM data loggers and made my own arduino based accelerometer and GPS data acquisition systems; but lately I prefer the phone/tablet based GPS logging apps when paired with an external 10Hz+ GPS. IMO, the ability to easily review the data on the spot and provide immediate feedback and comparisons between runs far out weighs the bell and whistles of the more advanced systems that typically require plugging into a computer to review the data. Phone mounting is really not an issue if you get a good mount (I use a ram mount or [kenu airframe] (https://www.amazon.com/Kenu-Airframe-Universal-Accessories-Compatible/dp/B00D901B4W/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1501912932&sr=8-6&keywords=phone+vent+clip)).

I didn't like the high cost of Solostorm, so I prefer RaceChrono for it's simplicity, while some people like Harry's Laptimer. They will all give you speed, position, and accel from the GPS data. How they differ is in the user interface and presentation of the data. For overlaying data on video, I use [Dashware] (http://www.dashware.net/).

Regarding the actual data, I personally find the speed and position data more useful than just the long/lat accel data. Pro Tip: You'll gain a lot of insight by logging data of people faster than you.

>i'm wondering if it's possible to still use the headset without them

Nope, you need them to play they track the headset and controllers. You literally get a grey screen in the headset if they are not plugged in.

>Also without drilling, what are some options for mounting or setting up the stations? I'm considering command strips as a temporary solution for the time being but are there other mounts or methods I should look into?

Don't try to use command strips; they will not hold them. Really the best solution is to drill and attach them correctly; you can learn to fix holes in drywall really easy. Save that you could use Lightstands with ball head mounts. You could also use contractor poles with Mounting Clamps or if you have a suitable method of mounting you can just use the clamps.

I use one of these, which I'm pretty happy with:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RDQVPTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like that it's pretty low profile when not in use. Also doesn't block the view of any part of the road. The thing I like best is that it's super easy to put the phone in with one hand, no fiddling around with both hands or having to readjust the angle every time, just pop it in and go.

It only works in landscape mode (which is fine for maps). Also the sticky tape that came with it was useless. I stuck it to the dash with heavy duty velcro tape.

u/beermit · 1 pointr/nexus6

I just recently got the iOttie Easy One Touch Mini and it works perfectly. Holds the phone tightly and very joint when secured but still easy to adjust. The CD slot mechanism is very secure as well. Works perfectly in my 2015 Focus.

I got that and was leery of a vent mount, but now I love it. I put it on the driver side center vent on the lowest most slot. Being on the bottom it fits in such a way that the vents can't move downward and bounce around. Its solid and exactly where I want the phone. Easy to see without looking down much but doesnt block the windshield at all.

The holder itself is really nice quality. The action of the arms releasing the phone is super smooth. Every few weeks it gets slightly loose and I just unclamp and reclamp it and it's good to go.

Not sure how I'll feel in the summer when the AC is on

u/reverendnathan · 9 pointsr/MotoX

I'd only recommend the Hint if you've come to rely on BT ear buds. The X is very functional with "whip-right-out-of-your-pocket" functionality thanks to active display turning on and deep listening ready to go.

The car dock I bought is a U-grip for ten bucks. It's not perfect, but it certainly holds my device in place with absolutely no slippage, and the rotation ball on the dock is adjustable which is nice. Easy to remove.

If I can upsell you on car crap, the Kinivo bluetooth car unit in particular supports AptX as do Moto products! No quality compromise versus AUX IN... ditch the wires in your car! I mounted the controller low and can pause and skip in a very comfortable position where the unit is hidden-- honestly, don't know how I went so long with something so dang convenient.

If you are splurging, the turbo charger is cool. For when you've got no plugs, a powerbank is nice. Other than power and cord management, this phone takes away a lot of necessity for accessories.

u/Ubelsteiner · 1 pointr/Nexus6P

Well I love my tempered glass protector, I think that's the most important accessory for any phone. Don't recall the brand. And this Spigen clear case is quite nice

But I think the one I'd recommend most to people is the Koomus CD slot car mount, which I am very happy with, after years of trying to find the perfect way of mounting my phone in the car. http://www.amazon.com/Koomus-CD-Air-Smartphone-Android-Devices/dp/B00HRKI5V2/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1450358034&sr=1-2&keywords=koomus

here's what I've been happily using & recommend:

  • this car charger. It will fully charge your phone while using navi with the screen-on at all times, if the charging cable is plugged in the NA-marked port and no other device is being charged at the same time. I've been wanting to experiment with a charging-only cable such as this one to see if it would help with better/faster charging and the possibility of charging a second device at the same time.

  • kenu airframe car mount. very simple, small, well-made, and works pretty much universally on all types of air vents. i frequently rent a variety of cars and have yet to stumble upon a model where the kenu wouldn't mount properly. holds the phone perfectly and takes a couple of seconds to mount.

as far as actual navi, GMaps has been unreliable for me during the last couple of roadtrips. I only used it because I knew I had a backup (standalone navi). it would crash silently and I'd have to pull over, and set it up again (and hope there is data/coverage because if there isn't, i'm SOL). this happened at least 4 times during a 6-7 hour drive. for this reason, have either a standalone navi backup, or another app that you can rely on, such as nav free or CoPilot, both of which i've heard good things about.

    have fun!
u/DisconnectedChild · 1 pointr/GalaxyS7

Bear in mind that there may be differences in terms of how well one mount will fit in one car stereo, versus how it will fit in yours. (Obvious, I know, but felt I should mention it anyway).

That said, I've been using this one in my Nissan Rogue with my Galaxy S7 Edge and it's worked very well for me: https://amazon.com/Koomus-CD-Air-Smartphone-Android-Devices/dp/B00HRKI5V2?ie=UTF8&ref_=pe_1763890_145073390_tnp_emaildp_i1

It's quite easy to insert the phone into the arms of the mount, the mount has held onto the phone very well, and it's simple to remove the phone from the mount. It also leaves the power and volume buttons accessible when the phone is in the dock.

I've been very happy with it overall.

It really is the most logical and elegant place if one uses one's phone for google maps and/ or waze.

For the last years, I have been using a variety of magnetic mounts and they are good in all cars I have used except the W205.

I have a thin, flat magnetic sticker plate on the back of my black iphone. Almost invisible. The magnetic attraction grip with the mount in the car is excellent and is quick and easy to put on and off.

It is almost unbelievable that Mercedes themselves have not integrated a series of hidden magnetic mounts in the cabin.

The person who markets an elegant solution for my problem is going to make a mint.

u/DMAC55 · 6 pointsr/FordFocus

Kenu Airframe

It rotates 360 degress at 45 degree increments, nice soft rubber that has great grip, has a nice little squeeze/tension to hold the phone.

Slides right onto the AC vents, I decided to go for the middle left vent but the far left vent would be a nice location as well.

I like this as it stays out of the way of my field of view and looks clean, no suction cup non-sense unless you like those types.

u/sassafrasAtree · 2 pointsr/iphone

Here you go:
I have been using this case for my last 2 iPhones, and a new one is on its way for my 6+. At $11 it is a steal, and allows you to insert the phone in the protective sheath (that has a belt clip) either face up, or face down for more protection. I run with this case, and can't say enough about it. Plus, when I don't need to use the clip, I just use it with the inside case (it is two parts). The case has a kickstand on the inside case part.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O3BR5VO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My car had no real workable way to mount my iPhone. In my older car I used a vent clip (which was only fair, and ended up mangling my vent). This device is under $20, and is simply awesome! It inserts into your CD slot, and has a powerful magnetic disk/holder on it. It comes with several high powered magnets that go on your phone. One with adhesive, if your phone is naked, or simply place it under your phone case, which is what I did. The magnets are very strong, and I have never had it bounce off. Plus, the base part is adjustable. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DPMNNUO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I heartily endorse both products. Cheap, effective and work well beyond their price point. Cheers.

I went to the iron pony in Ohio recently and purchased this ram mounthttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B006X387ZS?psc=1&smid=A2XENS8LQP1A6D I really didn't have much knowledge of these but I figured there was a place I could mount it. It turns out that theres really not, i moved the clutch and brake levers all the way in an attempt to gain a little room for the mount and I probably could have squeezed it in with a Dremel but I really didn't want to do that.

Anyway after fighting the U bolt version for about 45 min i eventually decided that i was just going to mount it on my mirror, which...worked, and honestly worked very well. I tightened the mirror screws about a quarter turn more to ensure tightness and mounted this mount. It works very well. it doesnt vibrate much and its almost at eye level which is really nice.

Im only posting this in case someone was wondering which mount to purchase. I'm not telling to to buy this mount this is only what ive discovered using this. hopefully this gets archived until someone eles has this question.

I have one of these and love it.

https://www.amazon.com/Spigen®-Magnetic-Holder-Neodymium-Galaxy/dp/B0109JIQ0W

It uses magnets, so you can put it in any orientation easily and quickly. The magnets are strong, so you're phone definitely won't fall off. It's also quick and easy to pop it on or off. You can either put the magnet directly on the phone or inside of a case. I recommend a case so you don't get any sticky residue on the back of your phone. It's also only 7 bucks.

u/nightfright · 1 pointr/MotoX

I recently got the Aukey which is a magnetic mount. It's pretty cool, you put a metal plate in between your case and your phone then all you have to do is jump into your car and place it right on the mount. Super easy and hassle free. The only thing I kinda don't like about it is that it mounts on your A/C vent. It's cheap, like $6 so not a huge investment if you want to give it a shot. http://amzn.com/B00WU3W43G

u/bloke226 · 2 pointsr/MotoX

Someone recommended Aduro U-GRIP in another thread and I like it. I wish the Moto X had the ability to use Qi charging like the N5 because the magnetic mounts are very easy to use. The U-GRIP is strong and doesn't move. I live in New England and deal with lot of frost heaves and pot holes and sometimes you can't avoid them all and the phone doesn't budge when I hit one.

u/KCintheOC · 0 pointsr/Nexus6P

I purchased the Spigen magnetic air vent mount and it is the best car mount I've ever had. I've had dash stick-ons, CD player inserts, but this one takes the cake and its the cheapest of them all at 8 bucks. Nothing to open or release, just stick your phone on and pull it off. It's super secure and doesn't wobble at all. I haven't tried a crash test yet but it certainly holds up to hard breaking just fine.

This is a bit difficult question, because different people have different preferences and use different phones.

Some people don't like to block their vents, I live in Southern California, where if I used regular dash, it would shorten life of my phone battery due to the very high heat that accumulates there.

So in my case blocking the vent is intentional, so the AC can keep the phone cool. So far this mount works best for me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WVT3QJB

It can be mounted on the center console and I use phone mounted horizontally through help of an USB-C angled connector: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYL2ZTL

That seems to work well for me: minimal sun glare, horizontal position makes phone (HTC 10) content visible through polarized glasses. Doesn't obstruct anything important 2015 Prius IV (it sits on the mechanical CD door, but the way the console opens doesn't cause issues with it.)

Some things that didn't work for me:

Initially I also used ExoGear Car Mount: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G2U1O8E but stopped due to phone getting hot (might start using again in the winter)

Then I used Kenu Airframe+: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LU5LWQK

That fit on my left vent, kept my phone cool, and in vertical position (worked better with my M8 (no problem with polarized glasses)) although that location overall is not that good (you have to look to the side if you want to check map and there is often a sun glare there)

So, I'm the most happy with my current mount.

First official post here. Wanted to share my 2017 Mazda3 Sport GS Automatic in Soul Red Metallic. Named her after Julianne Moore. I bought my 3 last June from Jeff Holley at Mazda of Toronto - like so many others, can't recommend this man enough.

I cleaned her up in time for Spring (Ontario, the snow is finally all melting after the recent brutal ice storm), picked up my summer rims and tires yesterday from Allen at Simply Tire in Toronto, and took a bunch of exterior and interior photos for you lovely folks:

Mats: Mazda OEM All-Weather Floor Mats

Hatchback Mat: Mazda OEM Cargo Tray

Dash Cam: Aukey DR02-CA 1080p Dash Cam (routed through the headliner, down through the driver's side weather stripping and hardwired into the fusebox)

Start/Stop Button Red Ring: Found on eBay for $3 CAD!

Alloy Gas/Brake/Dead Pedals: Also found on eBay for around $30 CAD, no drilling required

Phone Mount: iOttie Easy One Touch 3 mounted to the side of the storage space under the A/C controls. (Incredibly sturdy, clever mount/unmount mechanism, and hardly moves when on the road.)

Hope you like!

Having gone thru many phone mounts, I found one that never falls off, even in this stupid Texas humidity. Spend the $ and get this RAM mount. It is worth the money. I also got the weather tech floormats. I used to live on a gravel drive way and it was well worth it. Now that I live in the city, they are still really nice. The factory trunk liner is worth it as well. Keeps stuff from sliding around.

Only other accessory I got was a V1 with the remote display. The remote display fits perfectly next to the start button, and the cables can be hidden easily using the power supply in the glove box.

Naked naked? The glossy slippery back is tough to hold it's not even so much about magnetic strength but just it's lack of friction. I'd recommend getting a dbrand skin or something similar for the back. Will hold much better and frankly just looks better while not having fingerprints smearing. Also better grip.

I use something similar to THIS with a dbrand skinned S8 and it holds fine. Slips otherwise.

I currently use a Spigen magnetic mount in my air vent and loved it in my previous car, but the vents in the car I just recently got are not as optimal for the vent mount. Was also thinking of looking into a CD player mount as well. But I heard those aren't as sturdy.

The one above seems like it'd work nicely, but I'm pretty used to the swivel adjustable one I currently use, so I'm hesitant.

The Ram Monut suctoin cups are beefy. They're about the size of the ones glass guys use to handle huge panes of glass, like for a storefront. You do need to keep the window clean and dry where you attach it, but once you do, it doesn't come off.

Here are the parts I used in my CJ:

[xgrip] (http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Universal-X-Grip-Holder-1-Inch/dp/B0055PH0XA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1375301187&sr=8-2&keywords=ram+mount)

arm

ball/base

Altogether, it costs about $40, but that's not a crazy price for an in-car phone mount, and they don't get much tougher than these (though they do make a bigger series that the company I work for use to mount Android tablets to farm equipment)

You may want a longer arm, depending on where you would bolt it, but I have mine in my CJ right behind my steering wheel so I can use it as a speedometer, since my stock speedo is rather inaccurate. There are many other parts available, so hunt around amazon. I'm not sure if they're available anywhere else; this is the only place I've been able to find them.

Good luck!

It got great reviews on thewirecutter.com, and I bought it for my previous ride. Great mount, but I do listen to cd's on occasion, so I just keep my phone in the little "cubby" of the center console, and rely on StarLink for navigation rather than Waze on my phone (which is not always the best, but whatever).

I personally don't like the vent mounts, but love the magnetic mount concept. I also don't use optical media, so seemed like the perfect use for my CD slot.

I remember it being cheaper, and the one downside is it doesn't seem to work in all CD slots equally - works great in my car, not at all in my truck. I would avoid this thing tho, it broke within a week.

I found the vent mounts were the same, did not work equally in all vehicles (different vent designs work better than others for a mount).

Edit - found a cheaper one that looks similar to the one I have.

Get this, I know you have tried something like this before but I promise the spigen one is superior in every way.

  1. The magnet is much more powerful than the other brands and holds it tight, I'm using it for 9 months already and I never had it slip or fall, I have a 6s and I even put the magnetic disc behind my phone case.
  2. The clip is made from a soft silicon rubber so it will not scratch your vents and stays put without moving.
  3. The magnetic disc is super thin (thiner than other brands) if you put it under the case you won't even notice it.
  4. This is so tiny that it doesn't take any space at all and you never have to take it off as it is basically a 1.5 inch circle, if you are like me and don't like uber like cradles and stuff attached to your windshield or glue residue from the other ones.

The only downside is that it will block the airflow of the vent somewhat when you have the phone attached.

My second choice would be the proclip but that one is around $60.

Looks good, but pricey. I got this for my A3. Works great, is relatively low-key (aesthetically) and the price is awesome.

u/kekspernikai · 1 pointr/iphone

I just use the one I got on sale from Amazon. It was maybe $5-8. My friend has a different one and they're all about the same. It's really strong and I love the setup, but every once in a while it seems I have to rotate the magnet piece clockwise, like it comes loose or something.

If you get one with a ball socket, it may be better, but then you obviously can't hide the iPhone side of the connection.

There's a bunch like this- this is a different brand but identical product.

u/Joshy3367 · 5 pointsr/ft86

I dont recommend any of the above posted.

YOU MUST get the iOttie V3. It was on sale with prime day for $17, usually $25. Which it is now. The suction of the cup is outstanding and the phone wobble is next to none if any at all. Free prime shipping. I think 1 year warranty. And has tons of great reviews!

This is what I use. It has a magnet that clips onto an air vent and a steel plate that attaches to your phone to stick to the magnet. The plate is probably intended to go under a case but will fit under the normal backplate of the ZF2 if you don't use one. This might break NFC functionality if you care about that, haven't tried it. Has worked pretty well for me. There's a bigger version with a stronger magnet but it doesn't really seem necessary even for a big phone like this.

I ordered this hands-free mount from Amazon and it's a good one. Thanks to voice recognition I can say "Hey Google, load the TDOT Smartway webserver" and it'll pop up. And with Bluetooth, I can take calls over my car's stereo system instead of using my hands. If you have an older car without Bluetooth, you can add it for $18 with this adapter. I have one in my older Subaru, and it's good to go there. It has a surprisingly good microphone built-in, as well as a quick charger.

u/frostbitex · 3 pointsr/Nexus6P

I used to use the unicorn beetle pro. The screen protector is a cheap piece of plastic which didn't sit flat on the screen and scratched easily. I actually just ripped the plastic off and used tempered glass. It is quite durable. It is a bit thicker than most cases and should provide ample protection. As for taking it off an on, it's a bit annoying, but should only take like 10-20 seconds. I'm not sure if it's from me putting my case on and taking it off, but I did notice some of the paint chipping away on the edges where the case would rub up against when putting on or taking off the case. I liked the case overall, but I use one of these https://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Swift-Snap-Technology-Smartphones/dp/B00PGJWYJ0
I had the metal plate between the case and the phone. The case was a bit too thick, which made the magnetic mount a bit useless. I ended up switching to the Unicorn Beetle Slim and don't look back. The magnetic car mount works perfectly, and I still feel comfortable with the level of protection it provides.

There are plenty of options for mounting your phone, but I suppose it's a matter of what your preferences are (e.g., vent mount, CD slot mount, dash mount, other) in terms of obstructing certain things in the car.

I personally use a Kenu Airframe vent clip mount. I mount it on the left center vent which offers great visibility. I personally don't mind vent clip mounts as the A/C keeps my phone cool during the Summer months and it doesn't interfere with the nav display at all and is quite discreet.

If you're okay with using a case and/or sticking a magnet on your phone, then you could also consider the KUDA mount which offers a fairly OEM appearance.

I've used this with really great success: iOttie Easy One Touch 3 (V2.0) Car Mount Universal Phone Holder for iPhone X 8/8 Plus 7 7 Plus 6s Plus 6s 6 SE Samsung Galaxy S9 S9 Plus S8 Plus S8 Edge S7 S6 Note 8 5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BZC262Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4KdLBbXW7QBVK

The suction pad is really sticky. It's not a normal suction pad. The sticky part helps it to really cling to whatever it's attached to. I use it on the dash vents on top, though I think I have it attached to one of those large round disks that I stuck first to give the mount something to grab to.

u/FullyBaked · 1 pointr/motorcycles

At first I only used this Cardo Scala G4 which installs into almost any helmet. Now I mainly use it just for music. The playback controls are super easy.

Very recently I added a Battery Tender cigarette adapter along with this Ram Handle Bar Base and my existing Ram X-Grip Mountwith a 1" socket arm. I just took it on a good 2 day ride and loved it completely.

Exactly, with Bluetooth you don't even have to touch your phone. It can sit in your pocket. If you need GPS is easy enough to be a dock for your phone that essentially does the same thing (http://www.amazon.com/Koomus-CD-Universal-Smartphone-Motorola/dp/B00HRKI5V2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393863763&sr=8-1&keywords=koomus+air) However, I'm glad Apple is putting something on to the market I feel like their designers will help speed up the modernization of built in head units across the board. Alright I just Solo'd an Alakazam right now https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/alakazam-solo-raid-guide he had Confusion (rated Challenging by gamepress) and Future Sight (rated Easy by gamepress) and it took me 4 attempts to get it. I went with lv30 Houndoom (S/FP), lv32 Houndoom (S/C), lv32 Scizor, lv30 Mewtwo, lv32 Tyranitar (B/C), lv30 Tyranitar (B/SE). I kept timing out as you can tell based on my unoptimized squad. Some issues were hitting me like timing out with 5 seconds left. What I discovered with this little experiment of mine was a nice little hack to improving your phone performace underpressure. https://www.amazon.com/Kenu-Airframe-Android-iPhone-Accessories/dp/B00LU5LWQK/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1523903603&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=kenu+phone+holder&psc=1 I have this car mount and it's on your air vent. What I did was turn my car on and placed my Airconditioner on low and removed my phone case, shut all my vents off except for where my phone was mounted. It worked I beat Alakazam with 0 seconds left.

So would I recommend challenging any Tier 3 higher than Intermediate on Gamepress ratings? No. Don't do it. There may be exception if you have a tracker and know the moveset and have an optimized team for that moveset but it took me too much time and resources to solo that Alakazam and I regret doing it to be honest though I am stoked to have won.

Something of a lesson/cool story for you guys.

I don't believe in suction cups as they leave marks on the dash/windshield that say "expensive electronics probably inside! rob me!".

This is good, but the air vent holder did NOT easily fit on my air vents. I sold it to a friend.

This is the setup he's talking about but I've never used it and I don't like how clunky it seems to be, how it's a windshield mount and cannot be used with a case.

This is what I use. Amazon Basics 2.1 Amp Charger with this Mediabridge Coiled USB cable and this InfiniApps Slyde CD Slot Mount.

It's a great setup, that charges quickly. The charger and cable allow for AC power to the phone so it'll charge just as fast as if you were plugged into a wall outlet. Also, the mount is really simple and holds the phone steady with a magnet (you put a piece of metal, which is provided, in your case or stuck to the back of the phone).

I hope these links were useful.

u/bmf666 · 4 pointsr/GalaxyNote9

I use the Spigen Kuel A200 magnetic mount on my phone in the car. Like the Note7 and S7 Edge I had before my Note 9, this mount is capable of supporting the phone in my car through 99% of my driving with the exception of extreme bumps WITHOUT any additional magnetic material added to the case or phone. There is enough force from the magnets to the magnetic material already in the phone to support it. The mount does come with magnetic stickers (well, I guess ferrous stickers) to improve the magnetic force, but I find them unnecessary. Also these stickers interfere with wireless charging which I use a lot.

edit - I didn't go through lots of mounts or anything so I can't say if other magnetic mounts work well enough. This one worked on the first try back with my Note7 so I never had to try any others. My tips:

Things to bring

  • Bring a USB Cigarette car charger - Link
  • Cell phone dash holder - Link
  • Headphone cable - Link
(Listen to your jams while driving)
  • Some snacks (stop at Trader Joe's or similar store)
  • Bottle water
  • Map of the region (Yes we have internet.. but not everywhere)
  • Plastic bags as you acquire them (at the grocery store, gas station, etc.. work great for garbage)

    Tips for Rental Cars

  • Don't get the insurance
  • Don't get the insurance
  • Get there 20-30 minutes early and be nice to the guy/gal. It's going to be a busy time for them and they will have a lot of angry people. Usually if you're nice they will upgrade you to a large vehicle because they have too many reservations and not enough stock on lot.
  • Don't rent from the airport, always go to a lot off site.
  • Be sure to do the walk around, it's as much for you as them.
  • Do not pre-pay gas. Just fill it up to where it was before dropping it off. I always keep an eye out for the closest gas station before I leave.
  • Double check you got all your stuff. Even if you have to make a list. I've found all sorts of stuff in cars that even the detailers missed.

I travel/road trip quite a bit; If you've got any other questions, please let me know.

I've tried a few.

I have ended up with the following for three bikes:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055PH0XA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UGZTQO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012TWRAO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

The last one attaches to your handlebars, the middle goes in the middle, and the "X-Claw" holds the phone.

I commute ~19 miles a day in an urban environment. I have hopped curbs with this setup successfully and Icebiked over rough uneven icy/snowy terrain.

It probably would not be good enough for single-track or similar.

It has an added benefit in that the design works for almost any smartphone.

The spring in the first one I bought three years ago got soft this summer so I bought the "X-Claw" part to replace it. (which is nice - you fix only the part that isn't working).

Its an awesome setup - I recommend it.

u/addy8 · 1 pointr/MotoUK

It depends what phone you have, whether you want to charge and use it in the rain, short or long journeys.

quadlock is good if they make a case for your phone otherwise you have to stick a universal adapter to the back of the phone/case. If you stick it to a case it has to be a flat smooth case otherwise it might come off.

Ultimateaddons make some strong waterproof cases, good for long journeys or they do a universal mount and lots of different fittings.

Other universal mount options which you fit to your bike using different RAM mounts are Cliff-Top and RAM X-Grip.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/galaxynote5

I got this from Wizgear. Holds pretty well onto my vents, and the magnet is pretty strong to do its job. It has never fallen off for about a year now that I had it.

I just got this yesterday: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BZC262Q/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm absolutely loving it. It is extremely secure on the windshield or dashboard, and I prefer it over magnet mounts. Magnet mounts are great until you change your case and forget to include the attachment or don't use a case (like myself).

u/octobereighth · 3 pointsr/nexus5x

Depending on where you'll be traveling (i.e., depending on the temperature), you could get a magnetic phone mount that clips to your vent. Then turn the AC on - the AC will blow right at the phone!

Doubly good, since it will (hopefully) put your phone in a convenient navigation location.

I have this one and it's been great; there are tons of others on Amazon pretty cheap.

u/tuttipazzo · 6 pointsr/essential

I like it, however, I would like to see a back cover on bottom half to 2/3. Why? Because I have several of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PGJWYJ0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And it comes with a metal plate you place between your phone and case so the phone stays in place. It looks awesome in the car because there's nothing obscuring the phone. It looks like it's floating.

u/CommondeNominator · 2 pointsr/Audi

Fair enough, definitely easy and error-proof. Cords just bug me when I'm driving, I don't even have my phone charging unless it's nearly dead. Having a manual trans doesn't help.

I came up with a different solution though.

I used two of these nifty magnetic mounts and put the two rectangular metal plates on two corners of my iPad, placing the mounts in about the center of each of the middle airvents. The result works really well.. Makes it easy to just hand over the iPad to anyone who wants to control the music. Also have an apple music subscription, I think that covers about anything you want to listen to.

I realize this won't work for everyone, but this would work equally as well on any tablet (let's face it if you're driving an Audi you can afford a $150 nexus 7) and with any streaming audio service or just a very well stocked library of songs.

u/merlinshawn · 1 pointr/galaxynote5

I have a Moga Bluetooth controller, a "U-Grip" car dock, a dbrand black leather backing, and the wireless dock. I also got an LG Bluetooth adapter to play wireless music in my apartment.

I think all those things were definitely worth every penny... I feel like I've maximized the potential of my phone. The phone is a good chunk of money, so I want to use it to its potential.

u/glendonray · 2 pointsr/subaruoutback

Honestly, it's cheaper and easier to use something like a Nexus 7 mounted in your car with the Android Auto app. Works exactly the same, non-invasive, and is easier to update.

Granted it's not as integrated, but it's what I have in my 2011 OB. I bought this CD player magnetic mount that holds my Nexus 7 (2013) fine. I do have T-Mobile so I tether at no extra charge to it from my phone, but this whole setup only cost the price of the mount for me and I love it.

u/cardboardcowboy · 1 pointr/galaxynote4

I've had this one for 4 months or so and I absolutely love it.

The pieces that actually hold the phone aren't super bulky, which I like, so it maintains a relatively stealthy visual (about as much as you can get with this type of holder anyways).

I also like that it doesn't fully cover up a vent which should be nice as it starts to get hotter in the next month or so.

The mount I use and love is this:

http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO

I have this in my 2014 wrx and love it. It makes it much harder to use your CD player, but since I have never used the cd player once in favor of bluetooth or the AUX jack, that wasn't a problem for me.

The only downside to this mount is that you need a case for your phone. It comes with two metal plates, a normal one, and one with a sticky back. Just put the metal plate in between your phone and a thin case (the thicker the case the less the magnet will work), or use the sticky backed plate and attach directly to the back of any case. I have a galaxy S5 with one of those rubber inside / hard plastic outer shell cases, and I put the plate between the two layers of the case. Another option is to get a cheap case that is easy to take on and off, then stick the metal plate directly to the case and put the case on only when you are using the phone in the car.

edit: If the cd mount is not your style, they have a dashboard version on their website, which uses a gel suction pad that should stick to any dashboard surface. http://www.infiniappstands.com/

Check out the CD player mounts as well, I have one and with the position of the CD player in this car right above the infotainment center, it's amazing. See for yourself! (Sorry no phone in the picture because I was using it to take the picture lol) In landscape mode it doesn't cover any of the touchscreen, as you can see in the picture, besides the Pandora button, and who uses that anyway? :) Besides, there's still room under the mount to reach under and press it anyway, you just can't see it.

Also, the top part of that mount retracts and grips the phone, so even if you have a larger phone it won't cover any of the touchscreen. It's sturdy enough for the phablets too, I've used it with my Nexus 6P and it works amazingly. It does rotate around as well if you prefer the portrait mode.

u/TheEdgeOfTheInternet · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

I've been using this TechMatte mount since March of this year.

  • I used the larger rectangular plate pictured on the linked Amazon page.
  • I have it installed inside of the back cover of my 5X.
  • I don't have a skin or case on my phone so when my phone is mounted it's direct contact between the phone's standard back cover and the mag mount.
  • Experience has been fantastic. My car has a broken strut in the front end and when I hit a bad pothole it can be quite a jolt and the mount itself will shake quite a bit. Regardless the magnetic connection holds tight and the phone doesn't budge at all.
  • I don't use NFC often, but the few times I've used Android Pay have worked flawlessly with the metal plate installed.

    EDIT:

I also just wanted to throw in as a little bit of an afterthought, after I got the magnetic car mount and installed the plate in my phone, I bought a few of these flat stick-on magnets to stick certain areas my phone tends to spend a lot of time like on the wall next to my bed. Just a little added bonus.

I own this one and it is the best mount I’ve ever used. I believe this company has Qi charging mounts as well but I don’t think they mount to the CD slot like this does.

I use a Vector Offroad bar across the dash

It's just like what it looks like, a secure bar across the dash. Low profile, doesn't get in the way. I then use one of these.

With this,

and this.

You can basically customize your dash to fit YOUR exact needs. With all YOUR exact items. It's been nice.

Driving a 2009 Civic, I picked up a Kenu Airframe to mount to the far left vent. It helped keep my phone from overheating in summer to keep it in front of the ac vent.
My gf has an iOttie dash mount which also works much better than the older dash mounts i'd tried in years past, although i prefer the kenu airframe because it keeps the phone closer to key in things.

Best of luck.

I just went through this myself. I used this article:
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-bluetooth-kits-for-every-car-stereo/
Their #1 recommendation doesn't do auto-connect, have to press a button each time (they do mention that). I went with their #2 recommendation.

Pay attention to the model number of the #2. The one they recommend is HB01, not HB01 Plus. They mentioned that the Plus has ground loop issues. Some people on Amazon also mentioned it, but not enough. I gave it a try... had to return cause I also had ground loop issue, along with echo on call. The recommended HB01 worked great so far.

For the mount, I got this. Have it mounted on the dashboard, but it mounts to windshield too:

Items used:

Battery SAE Connector $6
SEA connection that has 4 plugs. If I need to hook up a battery charger or air compressor it's nice.

USB Power $10 I used one for the phone itself and one for the hub, however you only need one. I just didnt not want the amplifier taking power away from charging the phone. Redundancy is nice too. Extra USB ports for whatever.

USB Hub $7 For all the gadgets.

USB Phone Power Cable $5 This is the real weak point in the setup. I've gone through a lot of these. monoprice.com is good for really cheap cords.

Helmet coil cord $5 With this cord you never know the cord is there until you get off the bike and it will break away.

Helmet speakers: $10 I found a great deal on ebay for some "hoodie" speakers and I epoxied them in the helmet. You could always use this setup with earbuds too, but I was never fond of getting them pulled out while riding.

Phone mount $35 I would trust it will an $800 phone.

While this is maybe not a fun or exciting gift, I highly recommend that if she does not already have a phone mount for her car that you get her one, especially if she'll be using her phone as a GPS. I went through four of them before getting the Ram Mount X Grip and I haven't needed a new one since. Its a bit pricey at $50, but its seriously the best car mount I have ever had. The others all either had sticky stuff that melted in the Texas heat or plastic gears that just sheared and broke or just springs that didn't maintain tension. This one is fantastic.

I use the iOttie Easy One Touch 3. It comes with a reusable dash pad with a non-destructive and renewable adhesive for dash mounting, or you can mount straight to the windshield. It has a ton of versatility in mounting location due to the high level of adjustability on the mount itself, and has a easy in, easy out system where you're never fidgeting with clamps...just press your phone against the back and it snaps closed, press the buttons on the back and it locks back open.

Super sturdy, extremely secured and rigid, and has a quick release button. Yes I know you said you don’t want a vent clip but this one doesn’t block any air flow from my AC at all. Not this one I got it and it's freaking useless. The magnetic disk part twists on, but the range of motion is like 10-15 degrees so it comes off very very easily. You could get it to work with some sugru or glue or something but otherwise, dont waste ur money.

Copied this from another comment I made a few months ago:

I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-InfiniApps-Mount-Car-Smartphones/dp/B00DPMNNUO

It fits into the CD slot which I never use. It comes with a metal plate, which I've put inside the phone behind the back cover. This is what holds the phone magnetically to the mount.

I have a short USB cable leading from the charger port to the phone.

I am very happy with it. It holds my phone really securely and doesn't block the screen at all in landscape orientation. It does block it a little in portrait orientation but I don't mind too much.

Overall for $20 I'm very happy, and it's lasted several years.

Generally, they are very portable. Just remove the lighthouse from the pipe-clamp (so you can pack the important device securely), release the extended parts and pack it away.

Just make sure wherever you plan to set it up has a flat ceiling which isn't too tall, or a corner you can carefully lean it against.

Alternatively, these clamps look like a good idea if you have something tall to connect them to (like a bookcase) in the correct position in the room:

Good topic, and I learned something today as I didn't know a magnet would stick to the G6 without the plate.
I've been using a MOCI car mount for a year and used it with my G4, G5, and now G6 and have not experienced any issues.
Below is a link to the current case I bought, permament MOCI mount, and a travel one. The reason I bought the travel air vent mount is that I wanted to get away from taking my Tom Tom GPS when I travel for work. This allows me to use the magnet so I can use my phone GPS, plus it's a nice kickstand for plane trips.

Ok firstly you don't use a mount to charge your phone, just get an accessory port (cigarette lighter) USB adapter and whatever cable your phone needs , just make sure to get one that is at least 2.1 amp, my current one has 2.1 amp ports and one 2.4 amp port.

As for the mount I currently have - iOttie Easy One Touch 3 (V2.0) Car Mount Universal Phone Holder for iPhone 6s Plus 6s SE Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge S6 Edge Note 5 4- Retail Packaging- Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BZC262Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NQ3HxbN7696ZW

I'm trying to get it and the dash to cooperate but the part of my dash where it attaches flexes quite a bit so am contemplating solutions for that outside of just duck taping that panel to the one behind it. If I can't get it to work on the dash I'll just flip it around and put it on the windshield like I had my previous one.

If you only have a 5" screen, it sounds like you might as well use Android Auto directly on your phone screen (standalone mode) so that all you need is your phone, the app, and a cheap mount (like this one). That's how I use it. Works best in portrait mode.

Copycat models cost half as much but their suction ability is terrible and will fail on you.

This I have mounted to the vent next to the steering wheel so it's close, and the phone gets to cool down when the AC is on! (Not so good in winter with heat on.) It works very well overall... easy to use, reach, handle. Small enough to take with me if I switch cars, and rather durable. Been using it two years now.

GorillaPod makes one that is suitable for a point and shoot.

Then there's this for only $800 without a head. But it seems like it's exactly what you have in mind.

You might be able to DIY by removing the feet of the tripod and shoving a cell phone magent mount like this and securing with gaffer tape. I have one of these, and the magnet is quite strong. If used at a higher speed I'd be double-sure and use tie-downs on it.

The Kenu Airframe+ works fantastic. I got it for my wife and it's such a well built, simple and small item that holds the phone perfectly in portrait or landscape mode. They sell the original Kenu Airframe for a little bit cheaper, but it isn't as deep and it doesn't expand as much, so I can't say for sure if that one would work.. Seems like it would though.

u/heath_says_wut · 2 pointsr/mazda3

Just don't buy anything that glues to the dash/window (including the Scosche). It will unglue or make a mess from the heat if you're in a hot southern climate. I didn't like the vent mounts either but for the new model you don't have any good dash locations. I went with the spigen. It has a soft rubber surface and won't scratch your vent and the magnetic disc is super thin, I've had a few cheap ones and the difference in quality is huge.

If you don't want to block the vent, get the Proclip, your budget should cover it.

u/Malfunctioned · 2 pointsr/LGG3

I remove the phone's back cover to expose the hot area, especially the area around the rear buttons and camera, and use tape to keep the battery from falling out.

Hold the phone with a phone mount that doesn't cover a lot of the phone's surface area (I use a $5 clone of the Aduro U-Grip, or maybe something like this?, and I bet there are better options). Secure the holder so it doesn't topple over since most car phone holders tend to be front heavy when used as a desk stand and their sticky suction cup mount suck.

Aim something like a small USB fan (or air conditioner flow) at the back of the phone. It is barely warm when running Pokemon GO in 85+F ambient environment.

u/i_am_atoms · 1 pointr/motorcycles

If you don't want to mess with your walls, a fine solution is to use tripods similar to the ones for photo lights. For my Vive I have these for my dorm's common room and they work just fine. When I'm home and I have less floor space in my room I use these clamps to secure the lighthouses to my closet door and lamp, and they're perfect. I actually prefer these over the tripods as there's no risk of knocking over a tripod.

I assume both products are compatible with the Index Lighthouses because afaik they use the same standard threaded mounts as the Vive.

If you have a CD tray you don't use, get the Koomus CD mount, http://www.amazon.com/Koomus-CD-Air-Smartphone-Android-Devices/dp/B00HRKI5V2/ref=pd_sim_107_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=512x4RXhzBL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1DYKS4K9G7CFV8KSZ81P#

the thing is great! fits my 6P with a case, grip is tight on the phone, but easily removed. it fits very securely into your cd tray, not at all worried about it falling out of a big bump or something. and it doesn't block your air vents. ;). Of course, you can't use your cd player anymore but I use AUX so it doesn't matter. I prefer these to magnet ones since no one else can use the mount in your car but you.

I use a magnetic car mount off amazon. I used a dremel and routed out a little piece of the plastic trim around the head unit and ran the cable down that and through the center console. Then I used a switched obd2 power cable to extend to the OFT cable.

The install is super clean if you're willing to cut into your trim piece a little bit.

Ram X mount. This is the handlebar clamp option but you can also get a mount for your brake reservoir or handlebar clamp bolt mount. This is the best mounting system I've ever owned.

I'm a fan of the magnetic ones like this, though vent mount might not be suitable for some cars (my dad's F150 has weird vents it won't fit on).

But if it works, it's great to just get in the car and stick it right on the mount and not fiddle with springs or clips. You do, however, need a phone with a built in magnet (samsung galaxy's have it, perhaps others) or use it with a case (the mount ships with metal discs you stick to the inside of the phone case).

Your best option would probably be the holder that goes into your CD tray. Something like this or this.

I see that one. Works great, phone doesn't move. My phone is in a clear case, and the magnet sits inside the case on the back.

Probably something like this or this. I used to have the air vent one, it worked well (though blocked/absorbed air flow/heat). My friends thought it was magic the first few times they saw me use it.

I use a magnetic vent mount and put a thin steel plate between the back of my phone and the case. It works great (and keeps the phone cool in the summer!).

Lol I think I posted this in wrong thread somewhere (too many tabs open) but anyway:

Koomus makes some good stuff.

The mount you get with the Uber phone (suction cup mount, only fitted for 4 and 4s) is pretty crap imo.

Not a RAV4 owner but I have one of these (below) in my IS250 and it's great.

I'm not sure if it will work for the space you're wanting it or not but I've used this for over a year now without any issues. Used with both a Pixel XL and a Pixel 3 XL, best mount I've used.

u/Syphon0928 · 6 pointsr/Lyft

I've used one of these for years and it's worked great. It's simple, doesn't take up much space, I don't need to fumble around clipping it like a traditional mount.

Edit: typo

I absolutely love the Kenu Airframe. It clips into an airvent and stays put. I've had mine for about a year and it still works just as well as the first day I got it. Plus, at $25, it's relatively inexpensive in comparison with some of the other mount choices.

Ram Mount X Grip for iPhone 6s.

I post this to get feedback from riders who used the Ram X Grip with an iPhone 6s (not plus).

According to Amazon reviews, the original x grip interferes with the volume/power buttons of iPhone 6s ( and apparently 6s + too).

Then Ram offered the x grip large apparently to better fit iPhone 6 + and 6s + and other large droids.

I noticed that there are reviews that reported the same previous problem with interference with volume buttons of iPhone 6s even with the newer mount.

Any thoughts? Did it work for you just fine? Or is there another RAM alternative? I don't use a case for my iPhone.

I'm planning on pairing this with the RAM tough claw on an 07 FZ1.

u/phil_g · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

It should be noted that a) RAM stuff is awesome, and b) RAM stuff is modular; the X-Grip is just the phone holding end of a mount and you'll need additional parts to get a full car mount. I use this car mount kit, which has a suction cup, 3" (I think) arm, and X-Grip. I supplemented mine with a 6" arm and another ball joint, which give me a lot of flexibility in positioning my phone.

u/lioncat55 · 4 pointsr/AmazonFlexDrivers

This is the one I have. I find it quite easy to use. Push to snap the phone and then pinch the sides to release it. When you pinch the sides, it's easy to grab the phone at the same time.

I have a buddy that does food deliveries and also uses it. he loves it so much that when his failed he got a warranty replacement.

this was the setup recommended to me and its worked great.

If you plan to stick to sub-5" devices, the Kenu Airframe is a good choice. If you plan to upsize to the Pro range, choose the larger model I have the larger one, and it's been rock solid yet easy to put my phone in and take it out one-handed.

I appreciate the suggestion! If anyone else is interested, it’s only $8 on Amazon.

I had trouble with this at first as well. I like my phone to my right, but every spot in the middle seemed to block something. I ended up using a magnetic vent clip mount that works very well. I put it on the vent to the left of the steering wheel. It doesn't block anything important, and it holds my huge galaxy note 8 perfectly. It has never fallen off, or moved in the slightest. The way I have it mounted only blocks half the vent. No matter what you have to block something lol. Got used to it on the left, and ended up putting my accessport just below where the trunk release button is. Link to phone mount

A few things I recommend:

  1. CD Car Mount. They seem to hold the phone better than air vent mounts

  2. Power Bank

  3. Tempered Glass Screen Protector

  4. Spiggen Rugged Thin Case

  5. USB Type A to Type C for laptop/other chargers
