Just back the Schrader valve out like two turns with a tool like this

I wish it was as simple as that. I ruined a perfectly good tire by checking the pressures. You see... the valve cores hadn't been replaced in a long time. When I pushed my gauge on one of them, it didn't pop back up all the way to its original position. In addition, I drove with no caps on the valve stems since I was unaware valve cores could fail. So, I set off again thinking all 5 tires were great; however, I was slowly losing air. 20 minutes later, that tire got low on the highway, and it did what low tires do; it shredded itself to bits. When I managed to get the car off the road; that tire looked like black Doritos hanging off the rim. NOT FUN. The wild thing is that this failing valve issue was a thing on one of my other tires as well, but by this point I was watching them closely, and was able to reinflate that one while it was about half the right pressure. Instead of buying 4 new tires, I changed the valves, and put caps on all the stems, and haven't had a problem since. I also drive with a nice bicycle pump after watching u-tubes show that they indeed work. It may be slower, but it's old-school reliable.
