For my non-GR-events ruck I use a 5.11 Radio Pouch on one side and a Vanquest Hydra Water Bottle Holder on the other.

The Radio pouch is great for a radio, of course, but also for a surprising number of rectangular things like USB batteries. The Vanquest is very nice because it can collapse nearly flat against your ruck when you're not using it and it can expand to fit nearly any size bottle.

During events, I use no pouches or external anything. No need, no desire. Clean and streamlined.
