I second the use of a high-powered, brush-less drill with an ice auger. One of the best decisions I've ever made. However, I would not recommend the clam plate. Too bulky, time consuming to connect/disconnect the drill and the mechanical parts can break/freeze. They are much sleeker and simplistic options for around or under $20. (Not the one I own but just an example - https://www.amazon.com/Vendetta-Precision-Ice-Auger-Adapter/dp/B074M2TGXN/ref=sr_1_16_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1541703712&sr=8-16-spons&keywords=ice+auger+drill+conversion&psc=1) The clam plate handles are nice as ther provide added leverage, but I use the adjustable side handle that came with my drill and that works just fine.
Note: Not all drills have the capability of performing this task.
