Buy him one of each of these....They are not on the list of "tools to buy" from the A&P school but I promise you they are two of the most handy tools for working on airplanes. I wish I had discovered them when I was entering A&P school. I have probably over 10k invested in my snap-on roller cabinet full of snap-on tools, but these inexpensive little nuggets of metal from the heavens were used by me literally every day while I was a grunt mechanic. Be careful buying most hand tools as he will be getting 50% off from snap-on/MAC while in school but these aren't sold by either of them and you can't go wrong here.

Skin spoon: These things are invaluable for aircraft mechanics and are used on all sorts of jobs. Tell him to polish the tip of the spoon to prevent scratching/damaging delicate aluminum. It's cheap, and he will seriously love it, it will last forever.

"Husky" tool: Husky sold these here in Home Depot up until a few years ago. They still sell a similar type tool but I promise you it is inferior. Buy this one from Williams, the fine teeth in the ratcheting mechanism and very low profile design (the ones sold in stores are much clunkier now) allow the user to turn out screws/nuts/bolts in very limited space areas. When I started my first job, this was one of the first tools recommended to me to buy. It is literally a lifesaver sometimes and again it is not very expensive.

Seriously buy him one of each or just one and tell him or someone else you know that's looking for a gift for him to buy the other. These will last a long time and will be used almost daily.
