The specs are gonna work great but Lenovo laptops ship with bloatware that re-installs itself after a clean Windows install. Many would view this as a rootkit.

I have a 6200U, 16GB RAM, 250GB 850EVO SSD and it works for me doing the same. I would absolutely recommend an SSD though. I use EZdrummer with Roland edrums (also use REAPER) and there's not a single stutter anymore on lowest possible buffer settings (2.4ms latency), whereas the harddrive would cause the audio to crackle under heavy IO load.

With the SSD the main issue is space for projects. You should install your OS and plugin libraries etc on the SSD for performance and then back up your projects to an external HDD/cloud service when you're done with them.

Or, you could use a DVD caddy adapter for a large HDD to store/backup old project data.

There are a few of options I can think of:

  • Old laptop with 2nd hard drive on the ODD bay, using an adapter such as this
  • Older Raspberry Pi with a pair of USB hard drives, or the new one if you need USB3. There are a couple of SBC that can serve this purpose but Raspberry is fairly cheap and available
  • Second hand Synology Diskstation or ready-made NAS

On the software side, I'd probably go with OpenMediaVault or Rockstor.

I did this in my Lenovo T430, and it was easy as pie. Can't say for sure with your model, but something like [this](http://www.amazon.com/Zheino-Adapter-Universal-DVD-ROM-Optical/dp/B01B77AXGA?ie=UTF8&keywords=dvd drive hard disk caddy&qid=1464725382&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1) might work.

Many laptops will either have a push release or a single screw holding the old DVD drive in. With mine it's a press of a button and it slides out.
