Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values by Robert M. Pirsig - Still my favorite. A high school english teacher bought it for me when he found out I had just passed my motorcycle road test. I've read it at least 15 times, and get something new from it each time.


But the best recommendation - Buy the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL for your bike and read it. Read it often, until you can almost turn to the exact page for each procedure.

Has she read "The Perfect Vehicle"? May I suggest reading the Foreward (not available in the preview): "But the rider has never known fear quite like the one when riding just ahead is the object of deep affection." It's very moving and might provide the ever-so-slight shift needed for a willing passenger to become a willing rider. I love my wife holding on to me (or me onto her) but there's real magic when I see her riding beside. It's a long-distance, very intimate, and very public dance.

Just trying to put one more rider on the road, and help loving partners find one more shared activity.

indeed. In fact someone made a book of my friends BMW collection called The Art of BMW. All the bikes in it are from Peter's collection. He gets zero proceeds from the sales, and simply let someone make this book to help the world see his wonderful collection.

Start by buying this. Then the FACTORY service manual. The older manuals aren't great, but you'll need it. You're also gonna need a few specialty tools that the manual will tell you of, depending on what needs to be gone through- clutch hub puller, transmission sprocket nut socket, 4 speed shifting fork timing tool, timing light for ignition, torque wrenches, a bottle or blue 243 LocTite and a bottle of high-temp anti-seize compound.

After that, it's a matter of good mechanical habits, using LocTite on all fasteners that don't get anti-seize compound, and so on. Read the Donny Peterson book. It's filled with useful stuff you'll encounter.

The company has been around since 1903 (upstarts! Triumph since 1902! :) so there have been a lot of bikes.

I have an older edition of this one. Not super detailed per se, but great photos and general info that gets kinda detailed.

I don't know honestly. I pulled this article from a copy of the FXR performance portfolio.

Amazon does sell one on the sportster, but it looks like it ends in 1976
