It's St. Patrick's day so I'm going to go Irish on this one.. Specifically the simple easy meal that my mother fed us once a week or so for as long as I can remember.
Start with a smoked pork shoulder. If you look around the supermarket you can usually find a boneless one there. It really doesn't get simpler than this.. open the package. Chuck it in the pot.
Potatoes. A bunch of potatoes. You feeling the easy yet? Peel the suckers, or not if you prefer it that way. I peel them myself but I'm also the sort who can happily eat a plate of mash for lunch and be happy with my meal. The skins get in the way ; )
Cabbage. So uh.. buy one and put it on the shelf next to the slow cooker. Wait.
Give the pork/potatoes a few hours to cook. An hour or two before you plan on eating toss in the cabbage.
Oh - you're going to want some mustard for that pork. See if you can find some of this at your supermarket.
Good luck man, it doesn't get easier! FYI I have made this on St. Pats for many people many times and have yet to have anyone dislike it. My American wife likes it well enough that she requests it on occasion.
Definitely.
FWIW, if you like it as much as I do, I bought a 6 pack from Amazon. It brings the price down to a pretty reasonable $2.38 per bottle.
edit: I just realized that I suggested Amazon in two posts in a row in this thread... I am really not here to promote Amazon, I'm just a cheapskate who likes good foods!
Don't know about that recipe, but here's our instant-pot-ized recipe:
Get two carrots, an onion, an amount of garlic that you would consider a good amount of garlic (we use a head), a bay leaf, some peppercorns, maybe a clove, an apple if you're feeling fancy. Chop the big stuff in half or in quarters, toss it in the pot along with a half-cup of water to get the pressure thing started. Instant-pot on high pressure for 50 minutes.
Here's the second part that is delicious and that can be done with either recipe:
Heat oven to 350. Mix two tablespoons brown sugar and two tablespoons stoneground mustard (we use Plochmann's). Put the corned beef on a pan, glaze the top of the corned beef with the sugar/mustard mix, put it in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes - it should form a nice glaze. (Don't let it burn.)
This is the best I have found. Just add water and make as little or as much as you want. It is super hot and sinus melting.
Sorry, mustard powder.
You can buy it in most grocery stores in the spice section. It is also good for making home made mayo and even in a dry rub for BBQ. It gets pretty hot, but adding a vinegar will stop it from getting hotter. It is like horse radish as the heat dissipates pretty much as soon as you swallow it.
Prepared is the usual stuff you'd put on a hot dog. Powder is ground mustard seed, like this or this. The prepared stuff usually has vinegar in it iirc, and sometimes other things like beer.
Here's an Amazon link for some zhacai too. Hope it helps!

I am finding it on Amazon for way cheaper than the McCormick stuff I find at my stores. I found this for the equivalent of 20 cents an ounce vs. Walmart at close to 2 bucks an ounce. There were a ton of other varieties and companies on Amazon. I am thinking of making my own too and will probably get them online here.
Coleman's Mustard powder.
You can buy it on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Colmans-Dry-Mustard-Pack/dp/B01IW9TQHI/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1549760655&sr=8-4&keywords=coleman%27s+mustard+powder
I bought mine off Amazon.
Jansal Valley Brown Mustard Seeds, 20 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MBFRORO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_SfpTBbCHB829B
I just bought two jars of it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CTGNKFA/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1406748732

What country are you in?
"Tomato sauce" is just passatta.
If you are in the UK you can get American mustard here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Woebers-Genuine-American-Mustard-Pack/dp/B004DMS3MS
It is not an actual American brand but I can confirm the taste is identical to say, French's which is the American standard for "yellow mustard".
I get an organic brown mustard seed, in one pound in a resealable bag. It never occurred to me that it was costly. I think I assumed as I specifically wanted organic. Here’s what I buy and use. Frontier Bulk Whole Certified Organic Mustard Seed, Brown, 1 lb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006T0OIOO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_o2RxDbM4A5S1J
I would normally suggest avoiding mustard powder but that might be all you can get. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B000I4MKSS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_F0-xCb58DHZN2 might be worth a try but it’s pricey.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DBSOLTY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_R1-xCb2Z77DJS if you are really desperate!
Or there is this mustard that Hap used to fuck up the sandwiches he had with Leon in the morgue so badly that Leon tried to kill him. It even costs $6.66, so it must be the right choice.
Edit: LOL after 8 hours the price went up to $7.24
