i had this exact problem while working on my urbosa build. polystyrene rings are a good option.

if you go that route, be mindful how you paint them. most spray paints will dissolve polystyrene. that issue is easily solved by applying wood filler and gesso. wood filler is a sandable putty, which you can smear on the rings and then sand to a (nearly) smooth finish. gesso is also sandable, also smearable, and will help get that finish even smoother. gesso is also meant to accept paint, which will protect your rings. i used this exact process to make urbosa's scimitar out of extruded polystyrene (XPS).

Get some end sealer and coat the end grain to prevent cracks from forming in the ends at the chunk dries. Keep it in a cool environment where it gets air flow, away from heat sources. Lay it horizontally across some 3/4" x 3/4" stickers to allow air to circulate underneath it put more stickers on the slab DIRECTLY above the lower sticks and set something heavy on top of that to prevent warping.

Plan on this taking 1 year per inch of thickness to dry.

^ that's the brand. It worked well on a much larger plastic model, so I hoped it'd work fine, but thought I should check with the experts.
