Awesome. I'll be happy so long as I can get at least 720p @30fps. I'm planning on buying this adapter to go with it, so it'd be sweet if the 5Ghz connection helps even more. Thanks for the help!

Looking at this.... You'll be immensely happier just buying a 3-4TB external and adopting it to the machine. The 100$ you save by going the 16gig shield route... you can put to buying a drive like this and be much better off. Side note... The shield unit can natively emulate everything up to about the dreamcast era of games. Most dreamcast play okay... some gamecube play as well, but most don't. XBOX and PS2 don't play at all that I have found.

You can do everything up to n64/ps1/saturn(no nintendo ds since you can't emulate touch on the console) era in about 1.82 TB[according to my library] including mame and CHDs. I don't know if the MAME CHD games play well on the shield natively, I haven't tested them.

But I do know that USB based joysticks like the X-arcade sticks work(don't know about the trackball).

Edit: Also, transferring large amounts of files is terrible on the shield. There aren't any real good file explorers for the shield. So it's much easier to just unplug a USB drive and bring it over to the computer and put the files on yourself than wait forever for a network transfer over ES file Explorer.

    1. probably, but way too complicated to do it this way and nobody really has put that much effort into making an app to do all. If you find a way, good luck.

    1. if it all was possible, then you would use this program to make things happen. Also try Downloader. Its much easier to navigate.
    1. depends on your connection, the add-on you use and/or the health of the stream. Yes, subtitles can be downloaded from the stream. I think it still depends on the add-on you are using to stream tho.

I can't advise on netflix (don't have it) but I did have a problem with the supplied shield controller - home and back buttons were both extremely unreliable, even after a full charge, missing 90-95% of presses. Fortunately, I got two controllers as part of an amazon UK deal, and the 2nd one worked perfectly. I sent the dodgy controller back to amazon and the replacement also works fine, both before and after controller firmware update. So it may well be you too just have a dodgy button'd controller alas.

Kodi works fine for DTS & AC3 passthrough to on my receiver, when I switched it on instead of downmixing! I have switched to SPMC though, a kodi fork with better shield integration (voice search in and out of SPMC, SPMC shows/films showing up in recommendations being the ones I use most)

AFAIK, the shield doesn't support any interlaced modes at all, including 1080i.

With regards getting your Z5500 surround working (used to use that myself until recently!) you can use a usb soundcard on the shield, like this one (http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Advantage-Digital-Adapter/dp/B0036VO4X4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463782348&sr=8-1&keywords=advantage+micro+ii) or an hdmi -> spdif splitter such as this (http://www.amazon.com/Tendak-Optical-Extractor-Converter-Splitter/dp/B017B6WFP8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1463782375&sr=8-4&keywords=hdmi+optical+splitter) or there are RCA versions - either should get you AC3 & DTS support

I've been using this one for a long time, it may be expensive for one screen protector, but it's very good quality! I was even able to perfectly re-apply it to the new tablet after the recall (with not a single bubble! :P)

Highly recommended!

If you don't mind used, or like new, Swappa, or Ebay. I bought mine off Swappa, but it looks like most only ship inside the US, maybe check back some other time on Swappa. http://swappa.com/buy/nvidia-shield-tablet-wifi

A Wireless 360 controller works perfectly, you just need a wireless receiver that's made for PC, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2#

And an OTG cable: http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Micro-USB-OTG-Adapter/dp/B005QX7KYU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410988101&sr=8-1&keywords=otg+cable

This is the micro USB adapter that I'm using and the tablet will still charge, but will charge slower. One thing I've noticed is that if I'm playing graphic intensive games such as Borderlands the Presequel or the Talos Principle, the battery will slowly drain even when it's plugged in, but won't die if it gets to 0%.

This is the ethernet adapter I'm using. As for connection speeds, I'm on 5ghz wifi when not connected to ethernet. I've ran speed tests and they're about the same, although I get much better latency when I'm connected via ethernet. In fact, the only reason I got the adapter was for a better GeForce Now experience.

You don't need a microSD slot when you've got USB 3.0 ports to add a flash drive.

I dunno how many apps you plan on installing but my 128GB ain't full and I've got a shit-ton of ROMs on it. The drive I got is $50 right now. Speeds will absolutely destroy whatever a microSD card would do.

As for your other questions... definitely a hybrid drive like the previous model and not an SSD at that price, looks to be just like Steam Link, there are "Tegra" exclusive games, forget rooting, and Google Cast has been renamed to Chromecast Built-in... are you familiar with how a Chromecast works? Well your Shield TV does the same thing.

Good earphones reward with a rich bass too. I use these Beyerdynamics. I originally bought them for my Samsung tablet, but the sound of the Shield far surpasses it. Gorgeous sound.

I actually use my nVidia Shield more for school work than I do anything else. I use the stylus and Evernote to take notes in my classes. Evernote is wonderful because I have the option to use the handwriting recognition and get nice typed notes without having to type, or I can hit a button on the app and start drawing diagrams or other notes without being converted to text.

I purchased e-books for my textbooks this year so I didn't have to haul books around with me when I go home on the weekends for work purposes or to class. Since I have a desktop, taking it home on the weekends is obnoxious to say the least, so now I'm able to stream my entire desktop to my tablet and work on any computer code I need. The great thing is that a remote stream desktop is very forgiving when it comes to latency. I have a USB 3.0 hub that I use to connect a mouse and keyboard to my tablet with.

When I'm not doing school work I will use the Shield as a second screen with my monitor. I can be watching movies or other videos online while I use the tablet to surf the internet or check facebook.

i ended up buying this stuff:

NAS:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BNPT1EG/ref=psdc_13436301_t1_B014YN6IK4

harddisk 2x 4 TB:

https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-WD4002FFWX-128MB-Cache/dp/B01CK5UBHE/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505392774&sr=1-2&keywords=WD+Red+Pro+WD4002FFWX

This should be enough for quite some time for me - there arent so many 4k movies out there yet ;).

i hear that i will not be able to use Plex, to connect to my NAS and flawless play 4K movies (40-50Gigs), because plex will always try to transcode the 4k movies, for that they have to be stored locally.

but i should stick to using Kodi and just play the files on the NAS directly from there.

  • advice on how to setup the nas / settings in plex / kodi or shield in general, is much appreciated.

This is the one I bought, seems to be working fine. It doesn't charge quite as fast as a standard smart USB charger (like Anker or Aukey), probably because of some loss but it works well enough. Ampere shows I'm getting about +1600-1800mah and that's with about a -600mah loss before plugging in.

Caveat emptor though because I have only been using it about 2 weeks.

I don't get this whole thread.

Plug in, switch to console mode. The Shield Hub is optimized for TV, and you can use it as a launcher instead of the stock homescreen.

Need an Ethernet port (for whatever reason; the Portable's WiFi connection is more than enough for me to stream hi-def Netflix and download app updates in the background)? OTG Ethernet adapter.

Want a TV-friendly controller? How about the fully-compatible FireTV remote?

Want ChromeCast support? CheapCast works great on the Portable. (That may break once the Portable gets L.)

OP confuses me. Everything he wants already exists and works on the "set-top" version of the Shield (the Portable in console mode with the lid closed).

The tablet market is very slow moving. Prices don't drop much even after one year.

I'd say the K1 still offers unbeatable value IF your main purpose is gaming.

It's still a good value if you use it for non-gaming stuff, but there are some downsides which some people can't live with. For example, it's very heavy. It's currently on July 2016 security patch (6.0.1) and there's no commitment whether there's going to be further updates. It may also be laggy at times (although it's always smooth while in-game). Battery life is okay but not that great.

Also, the 2GB of RAM may or may not be an issue for you but it's kind of an annoyance for me.

Personally, I love my K1 a lot because I use it exclusively for gaming. If it's not for gaming, I'd probably top up $100 more to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (this is the newer/2016 edition running Android 6.0) because it's lightweight and the display is so gorgeous.

Samsung is rumoured to launch the Tab S3 soon, probably at MWC in end Feb/early March.

The Samsung PRO series are the fastest around. Amazon Link. I can't find the post on XDA now but there was a member that was showing tests that this was actually faster than the internal memory. Played all games, including K1 optimized HL2 with no noticeable slow downs. So it's definitely doable.

u/eternaforest · 1 pointr/theNvidiaShield

I saw another user link that case and I just really personally don't like it. I use this one and it has a hard plastic back with a magnetic closure that wakes the tablet when you open it. I also have a glass screen protector, but as others have pointed out it's probably not necessary.

As for the micro SD and charger, I just use whatever charger on hand and I don't really use my micro SD for anything so I am not of much use on that front :)

Try these (link below), easy setup, scaleable for future expansion to other rooms, and works great!!
