I remember this phase of my yoga journey. Watch the video before hand on 2x speed. Pay attention to the poses, study each one. Notice the little things...Then play the video a 2nd time at normal speed and follow along with it.

It's clumsy to learn at first. You just TRY. And try, until you get it and feel it. If you cannot take a deep breath, you went too far into the pose.

It is pretty normal to feel like it is too fast. That's because IT IS - vinyasa (flow style) yoga is too difficult if you don't know all specifics of the poses yet.

Try hatha yoga instead. I recommend Rodney Yee. He holds each pose for about 10-30 seconds, not too long or too short. It gives you time to get set up in each pose and explore with the breath and try to identify which muscle is the target muscle.

As a beginner I got the most benefit out of going into and out of poses slowly - only as I undid all my muscular soreness was I able to do flow routines effectively.

This DVD goes on sale sometimes. It will fix all your problems https://www.amazon.com/M-Yoga-Your-Week/dp/B000YV1L4E

It teaches you how to do all the basic poses for:

-Forwardbends

-Backbends

-Hip Openers

-Twists

-Standing Poses

Tour this DVD (each workout is 20-25 min and it's split into those sections) and after doing each workout a couple times, you should be ready to attend ANY level I class in person or on youtube because you will KNOW ALL THE POSES and you can focus on just breathing

I have this one. The sections are only 20 minutes long so I can do one or do three if I have time. His beginner dvd is good too, it has a pose guide and the workouts are slower so you can get the poses down.

The mat really isn't necessary, but it is actually nice. I can see why they use them. All that's really necessary is for somebody to guide you through the poses. Small adjustments make a big difference. You don't need to be in shape or anything to start - the most important thing is that you're shooting for perfect form, whether or not you achieve it.

So for example, if I'm trying to do a standing forwardbend, and my goal is to touch the floor, making contact with the floor isn't important - at all. It's far more important to maintain the integrity of the pose, and not sacrifice my body alignment - even if that means being unable to touch the floor. Eventually, with proper form, I'll be touching the floor with proper form. If I cheated, sure, I'd be touching the floor, but with improper form!

I recommend this DVD to anybody who wants to learn but does not want to do so in a "class" environment. It got me from being a day1 beginner, to being able to participate in intermediate level classes:

It contains five 20-minute workouts. Standing Poses, Forwardbends, Backbends, Twists, and Hip Openers.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have been wondering what style I really want to pursue. Right now I have a this DVD that I am starting to do. I think his style is Iyengar. Which if I'm correct was started by the guy who invented pilates right? So far I like it. I don't know much about the different styles though and I have no idea what the differences really are. I plan on taking classes when I can afford it and trying a few different ones to see what feels best to me.

This is my favorite Rodney Yee video if you're new to yoga. I also enjoyed this and this, although I don't own them.

I tried that Power Yoga video once and it totally kicked my ass. People I know who do yoga more than I do enjoy it, though.

I currently do AM Yoga for Your Week 4-5 times a week. There are 5 main routines that are each 20-25 min long.

-Forward bends

-Backward bends

-Hip Openers

-Twists

-Standing Poses

I don't feel that one day of yoga is enough to really feel the difference. A few years ago, I did one day a week...I saw very little benefit. Once I upped my practice to at least 3 days a week the changes started coming hard and fast. Besides everyone wastes 30 min a day...make that 30 min useful.
