Get some stops made by Black and Decker (https://www.amazon.com/Decker-79-010-4-Workmate-Swivel-4-Pack/dp/B000QE7E4U?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1). Then, drill some 3/4 inch diameter holes in the work bench in various locations. Put one of these stops in a hole, and then you can use it to brace a piece of wood during sanding, chiseling, etc. When you're done, pull the stop out for an unobstructed surface. I've found that the holes rarely present a problem.
