I can't tell you much about the e92 (other than what I am looking at in alldata where one of the steps is -Remove lower section of steering spindle from steering gear), but the e46 uses a rubber steering coupler in the shaft that could possibly get stretched and then compressed weird if the shaft wasn't separated.

Finally, I mentioned the lines because BMW does include a warning specifically about them.
