sigh These types of threads always get the same answers. Reddit doesn't see many movies. Let me try and add some variety to this thread, mostly with foreign films:

  • The 400 Blows- Francois Truffaut's first film, a semi-autobiographical story of a young delinquent. Often considered one of the first films of the French New Wave, and a real masterpiece. You can get it here from the Criterion Collection.

  • Breathless - The other kick-starter of the French New Wave, this one from Jean-Luc Godard (whom I personally hate, but a lot of others love). This and The 400 Blows quite simply changed film forever. Everyone should see them both at some point. You can get it from Criterion as well, here.

  • The Killer - John Woo's amazing action film, centering around an assassin who takes on one last hit, only to be betrayed by his employers. The plot isn't anything special (though better than some Woo movies), but the action is second to none. Dragon Dynasty released it on Blu-Ray and DVD, here's a link.

  • Godzilla - The original and the best. In all the cheesy, "Godzilla fucks shit up" action of every other Godzilla film, it's easy to forget just how somber, dark, and beautiful the original was. Criterion released this one as well, here.

  • The Three Colours Trilogy - Kieślowski's three stunningly beautiful masterpieces. Criterion, yet again, released it. Here you go.

  • Caliber 9 - I always make a point to recommend this. It's from an Italian genre, poliziotteschi, which is basically 70's Italian crime. These films were a big influence on people like Quentin Tarantino, and they're just awesome. You can find this one on Blu-Ray or DVD in the Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection, which gives you several other films by the incredible director as well.

    Bonus American film

  • Rear Window - Pretty well known, but too incredible to not include here. One of Hitchcock's best, which is saying something. You can find it on Blu-Ray or DVD here, but I recommend The Alfred Hitchcock Essentials Collection, which contains several more of Hitchcock's best works.

Expand your horizons, Reddit. There's so much amazing film out there, you only have to look.

Edit: Added Amazon links, because I really want you all to see some of these films. If even one of you takes an interest, I'll be happy. Foreign films sadly often go ignored by all but cinephiles, but they can really be great, so I urge you all to take a look.

Edit 2: Another day, another ignored wall of text. sigh

A couple of really great ones have been suggested in The Thin Red Line and On The Waterfront, both of which are fantastic films and fantastic editions. I would also suggest:

  • The 400 Blows (releases on Tuesday, 8 April): One of my personal favourite films of all time, and an essential release in any Criterion collection. The latest re-release of this film comes out next week.
  • Dazed and Confused: Yes, you can get non-Criterion editions of this film for less money, but trust me when I say that the Criterion edition is well worth every penny. Not only are the supplements amazing, but the packing is some of my favourite of any Criterion release. It also comes with a bad ass poster, which is a nice bonus.
  • Breathless: Another essential for any Criterion collection. One of the most daringly original and fresh films ever released.
  • The Great Dictator: Even though Modern Times is my personal favourite Chaplin film, The Great Dictator is probably his most accessible film, and therefore probably the best introduction to his work. I would highly suggest all of the Chaplin films released by Criterion, though.
  • 12 Angry Men: One of the best American films ever, and one of the best cover designs of any Criterion. Yet another must-own.
