Could you please elaborate which TV and which laptop we are talking about?

Generally, you will need a converter. Why?

  • HDMI: digital
  • VGA: analog

So either your devices have these converters built in, or you need to buy on of these. Keep in mind that you need VGA to HDMI (streaming to your TV), not HDMI to VGA (streaming to your laptop).

You don't want a capture card, the video would probably lag behind a second or so.

First off, you want to make sure that you're using component video; the bad quality of composite/scart is really visible on a 1080p monitor (speaking from experience). Then just get some kind of converter, after a quick google search I found this among the top results, you can probably find something of even higher quality if you search around some more (use search terms like "component to hdmi").

Just don't get your hopes up too high in terms of video quality, you WILL see a difference in quality from what you're used to when using 480p analog video on an HD monitor. The best you can do is, like I said, make sure you don't use composite or scart video or it will look even worse than it has to.

Sorry, I don't know much about monitors themselves, but I do know a decent amount about cables and adapters. If I were you I'd research everything before ordering just to be safe. I also found this which has better reviews (I look at those things), but I'm not sure what kind of splitter is used for the audio.

Didn't notice that.

How about this Component to HDMI on Amazon. It looks like you'll need a convertor for the audio, but according to the reviews, it comes with that.

There are a few others that seem like they might work, but they don't have the best reviews.

There is this Wii to HDMI convertor which seems the simplest, but it doesn't have any reviews, so I don't know how well it works.

I placed an order earlier for the converter I found on Amazon here. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be looking at them if the one I got doesn't turn out the way I want. Have you had any first hand experience with the ones you posted? I'm really liking that USB to DVI to HDMI suggestion because it's such a cheap and easy solution compared to the rest.

Is this the converter I would need?

Not sure how no one gets this: the display should still come through to the software.

It works for everyone else regardless of not being able to record. When they try to record, yes, they get the HDCP message. I just need to see the display. I've even had the HDCP error before (I think it was from my iPad) so I just used FRAPS on the RECentral software and it worked just fine.

In any event, i guess I'll just have to give the component cable method a go.
