I can't warn against the Invicta watches enough. They are terrible built watches; hence the reason you see so many of the damn things on Amazon at rock-bottom prices.

Others in here have suggested Citizen, Skagen and Orient. I can vouch for the first two. I own 2 Citizens; A Citizen Blue Angel Skyhawk (which can also be found in the regular Skyhawk fashion as /u/HeadSnap mentioned), and a Citizen Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Sport. I love both of those watches; a word of warning, though, the face on the second Citizen is pretty sizable. The first I mentioned, the Blue Angel, is a smaller face, with lots of options for switching time zones and the like; great travelling watch! Citizen watches can take a beating; obviously not going to be as rugged as, say, a diving or climbing watch, but both my Citizens have had a few "run ins" with my clumsiness and general stupidity and are still going, and looking, strong. Please note that the Citizen stainless steel watches, like most of the sizes I listed above, have some weight and girth to them. But damn do I love mine!

I also own 2 Skagen watches: the Skagen multifunction steel face and leather band, and the Skagen Titanium Chronograph; neither of these qualify as the stainless steel watch you are looking for, but the quality of the watches is superb, especially for the price. NOTE: Skagen watches tend to be a very thin profile. While they look great, it may not be the look for everyone. I love mine due to them being versatile with everything from a suit to casual wear. Seek out a Skagen dealer to see if they are the watch for you. Edit: I am not so sure that the Skagen watches would fall under "BIFL". They have held up well for me, but due to the thinner profile definitely give off a more fragile vibe.

I bought a Orient watch for my father a few years ago, and he still wears it and swears by it. While I cannot personally vouch for it, I took a phone call from him while typing this out and he says it has given him no trouble. And he is hard on his stuff.

Again, I cannot stress staying away from Invicta strongly enough! They look, and feel, like a cheap chinese knockoff of major brands. I owned one and the damn thing literally fell apart after six weeks of wearing it twice.

I believe this is the one OP posted.

I've got a Blue Angels variation of this same watch and absolutely love it (mine doesn't have the LCD screens, which are a very cool option on this watch).

My husband had to sell his favorite watch, his iPad, and his aviation headset all in 2 months because he lost 50% of his income. It broke my heart to watch him give up things that were incredibly important to him. He owns 2 of the things again less than a year later. Things will get better. I hope you can get back to your passion sooner rather than later.
