u/snowballsupreme is correct, If you can afford it, even if it 's a stretch, buy a Glock 19. You'll buy it once and never look back.

However, based on the fact that you're 23 and have 4 roommates, I made the assumption that money does not flow freely for you. The Taurus PT111 G2 is a decent firearm and exceptional value for the price. During my time as a firearms salesman I transferred over 100 of these firearms and received complaints about 1 where the rear sight broke. I personally owned one, and have 4 close friend who also purchased the gun on my recommendation. Between us there's probably 5000 rounds fired without a malfunction across 4 different Taurus'.They did receive a bad rap in the 90s and early 2000s due to poor quality control, but a little known fact is that they came under American ownership from a Florida based company in 2014, since then their quality has increased substantially.

Now like I said, if it's anywhere near feasible to spend $550 on a gun, buy a Glock. I have 5 and love them, I carry one every day personally as well as for work.

Now considering that you're new to firearms, for the same $500 you can get
And spend roughly $25 on Federal HST at the local gun store and still be ~$100 cheaper than just buying the Glock. The PT111 comes with 2 magazines, a lifetime warranty, and a year membership to the NRA which also nets a free magazine subscription full of decent info.
And for credibility sake, I'm a Former Marine Range Coach, and NRA Certified Law Enforcement Handgun/Shotgun Instructor, NRA Civilian Rifle/Shotgun Instructor, Current Law Enforcement Officer, and a semi-competitive shooter.
Any whosits, I'm about to head into work. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I wish you luck on your journey into firearms ownership and remind you to be safe and knowledgeable.
