I have the same situation. 2 Hampton Bay fans with lights that only work via the remote.

I ended up getting the Cree connected bulbs.

They do look a little wonky with the split piece of plastic in them, but so do the GE ones as well. But our fans are 15 or so feet high anyway.

I noticed that too, I bought these (6-pack of connected bulbs from Amazon) for $87 a few monhths ago, and they're out of stock now. The singles seem more expensive, but I'm not certain what they cost before, so I'm not 100% sure.

Someone asked what SmartThings devices to look at to get started with the platform, and I was going to suggest a 6-pack, but...

As you grow your mesh, be aware that z-wave and zigbee are separate radio frequencies and therefore they do not extend each other's network. You can have both networks running at the same time (and the ST hub has radios for both built in), but a zigbee bulb on your back porch is not going to relay communications from the z-wave motion sensor in your back yard shed.

As far as 1% on my CREE bulbs, yes I can see small differences between 20%-10%-1% as I tell Alexa to dim my bulbs. But I do wish the 1% was a lot dimmer than it is. As you suggested, the lowest dimming level is probably a limitation in the bulb design/technology and I'd be willing to bet that some brands can get dimmer than others. Yet another thing to experiment with in the never ending list of HA explorations! Also, I'd expect the characteristics of a given brand will change over technology generations, and the generations are coming fast and furious, so the CREE bulb of today may act different than the CREE bulb of a few months ago. And to be specific this is what I bought in mid-December 2016 (unfortunately the 6pk for $86 offering I purchased seems to be out of stock at this time). If your bulbs aren't the same model or vintage, they may behave differently.
