You should absolutely bat proof your house. Your life is at stake here, not because of the bats, but because of your wife. So forget what other say about bats being desirable around your house, it does not apply to your situation, and don't dare use that in an argument with the wife.

From a technical standpoint, bat-proofing is almost impossible, as they're small and they'll make their way, so you want to uninvite them from your place. We know bats love quiet dark places, so based on your description of your place, the solution may involve:

1. Leave lights ON in the attic 24/7, bats hate lights. Install LED lights, which are safe and won't overheat, although burning your house down would probably deter bats.

3. Most likely bats won't be underside your deck, however, this doesn't matter, it matters how scared your wife is, so staple some chicken wire type mesh there, it will help with birds nests as well.

5. Don't ever ask yourself if there really were any bats in first place, it's not worth it.
