I'd say something with MX Blues. Reds and Blacks aren't tactile, Browns are barely so, and the other Cherry switches are somewhat hard to find. Blues will also make a clicking noise about half-way down so if your friend still cant feel the keys, he'll at least be able to hear them better.

The CM Quickfire is pretty much the universally recommended board for everything here, since it has a great price to quality ratio. You also wouldn't be going wrong with a Filco or a Das.

Do NOT get a Razer Black Widow. The 2012 models tended to be lemons, and the current 2014 model uses knockoff switches. The 2013 model was fine in terms of quality, but overpriced for what you got and impossible to tell apart from the 2014 model without pulling off a keycap. I say this because outside of this sub, you might see some recommendations for that board. Don't listen to them.

It is compatible, but if I were you I would swap the i7 for an i5 3570K. You won't need an i7 if you're not doing video rendering or intensive 3D modeling with programs that support hyper-threading (most games do not). The i5 3570K is just as good for gaming.

Sound card is really unnecessary if you're not producing music or have a really high end surround system.

Put the money you save from this into a better GPU (video card) like the GTX670 or a 7970.

Don't worry about what people say about the keyboard, if you like it get it. But if i were you I would get a Filco Majestouch Blue or Das mechanical keyboard. Sure no rad backlighting there, but much better feel and quality.

(I have a SteelSeries 7G, but it has "Cherry MX Black" switches and not "Cherry MX Blue" switches like the BlackWidow or Filco/Das. Read the differece here)

I think as a writer you'll appreciate cherry MX blue or brown switches. Having tactile feedback is helpful. If you work closely with other people, you would be better off with browns, which do not make as much noise.

If you don't care about the number pad, I strongly recommend ditching it. A
Filco with blue switches might be to your liking. They advertise blues as "click action" switches and browns as "tactile action" switches.

may I ask what keyboard that is?

I swear I see so many folks from Mechanical Keyboards on this sub. Makes sense considering many of us are primarily using desktop vaporizers inside.

Full disclaimer: while I love making comments on this sub I mostly typed this comment so I could get a feel for my new mechanical keyboard, the Filco Majestouch 2

u/tigojones · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

My QFR with Blues works wonderfully. Am a little surprised that you got three bad boards from two different shops, so I don't know what to suggest.

Might be time to look for a different brand. The Filco Majestouch makes essentially the same keyboard, but generally regarded as having higher quality construction.

Here's one from Ducky.

u/espressofredo · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I guess it is really different for different people, since the Ducky One 2 Mini is my main keyboard for coding. Anyway, you could try the Filco Majestouch 2 TKL, or the new RK71 mechanical keyboard (although these only come in kailh blues or browns).

These two are from different price points, but they are both really good. The Filco is your typical TKL, and the RK71 is a compact keyboard that still keeps the arrow keys.

Strangely enough, the Ducky One 2 TKL is available in our local game shop. A few months ago, these keyboards were nowhere to be seen, locally.

They sell the same board with cherry blues

And you can get the key caps if you search around.

I say fuck numpads.. rather have dat sweet mouse space. Also Black switches are best all around for gaming/typing/etc in my opinion (I've only tried blue/black/brown extensively)

If you want just a plain MX Blue board that is the highest quality then the Filco boards from KeyboardCo are in stock at Amazon. It's about the only time these boards are priced reasonably unless NCIX has them in stock. Which is also rare.

Better hurry though! Only 2 left in stock.

Edit: Actually this one is cheaper and they have more in stock. The difference is the first one I posted is the Ninja with front printed keycaps and black logo. The one below is top printed keycaps with silver logo.

I'm looking at the Filco Majestouch-2. But they are expensive.

u/frownface84 · 1 pointr/nfsnolimits

It's not too practical to use at work since it has blue switches.

Plus it's tenkeyless, and i need a number pad for all the spreadsheeting i do at work.

Also it's legendless, which is a PITA sometimes when I am looking for certain symbols.

I have a bad habit of eating at my desk at work, so using it there will just ruin it.

Edit :

Specifically, it is this:

http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Tenkeyless-FKBN87MC-EB2/dp/B004WOF7S0

With keys replaced with something like these

http://www.amazon.com/Blank-White-Caps-Cherry-Keyboard/dp/B012BDBZ98/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1453352965&sr=1-1&keywords=PBT+white+keycaps

u/BennyKB · 1 pointr/mac

So to be clear:

Your Filco board has a backlight, Mac keycaps (included in the box), no need for remapping software, and it's an 80%?

Sounds perfect

EDIT
this one is the one I found with Cherry MX Blue.

They're the ones that are super clicks and tactile right?

The other board I was looking at was this one. The only reason I like it more is because I know for certain the Fuction keys will work for my media and volume. Will the Filco do that?

I just don't like using drivers, they never seem to be consistent or work right. "I like plug-and-play"

u/Entropian · 1 pointr/gaming

For reliability and quality, you definitely want to get a mechanical keyboard. I don't know what's hot nowadays, but I got this 3-4 years ago, and it's still very solid.

u/nite_ · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Well I was planning on getting some blank key caps with different colors, so that isn't much of a benefit for me... I wouldn't think. Does Filco have a better build quality? I'm about to dish out $190.

"Razer’s BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate are produced by iOne who also produces the XArmor line of mechanical keyboards."
http://www.pcper.com/reviews/General-Tech/Razer-BlackWidow-Ultimate-Mechanical-Keyboard-Review-Mechanically-superior-Just

TBH the Ducky 2 certanly isn't the 'holy grail' of mechanical keyboards, I'd say a Filco is if we're talking about cherry switches. The OEM does not relate to the switches, it relates to the build quality.

http://www.amazon.com/Razer-BlackWidow-Ultimate-Mechanical-Keyboard/product-reviews/B003ZJ5B4I/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0

This Filco is much higher quality than the Blackwidow and is also cheaper. In Australia the filco costs MUCH less then the blackwidow, so perhaps that, along with the terrible quality, is why I'd never recommend one to anyone.
