For the original movie, I recommend the original release from the 90s. Namely, this one. The release of GITS 2.0 was a very ineffective remaster that added some excessively awful CGI to certain scenes while it left almost everything else completely untouched.

I would buy this one. It's the original version, no 2.0 crap or anything. It may skimp a bit on extras, but it's the best version.

This is the version I would recommend. There is a blu-ray version linked to is, but since it has the newer cover art I can't say which version it really is.

As far as watching it online, Ghost in the Shell Arise Borders 1 and 2 are available for streaming on Funimations streaming service and Netflix (US and Canada), Stand alone complex is on Hulu (1st and 2nd gig), while the other versions are not available for legal streaming as far as I know.

Watch the original first. There's the classic, then the New Blu-Ray release Both fairly priced for their animation quality.

You can watch Innocence next, if you liked the philosophical aspects of the first movie a lot, otherwise it's skippable.

Then Stand Alone Complex season 1, Season 2, and afterwards, Solid State Society if Stand Alone complex left a bad taste in your mouth at the end of the series. Both are priced fairly considering how much content they contain.

After that, you can watch Arise if you enjoyed the action parts of it a lot more. It's pricey, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Do be aware Arise is a prequel to the series.

The order of shows in Chronological order is: Arise, then Stand Alone Complex, then the original movie, then Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

All have nudity, sexual imagery, violence, and strong language.
