On the RPi, I've found that the limitation isn't the RPi or its USB 2.0 bus, it's the wifi adapter. I've been able to get 130+ Mbps on even an old RPi B (pre-+) using wired USB 3 adapters. Replacing one of those with a wifi adapter reduce throughput to 10 Mbps, and that's with a single connection. I tried Edimax, TP-Link and non-name generic adapters.

I've since found that the GLi mini travel routers are much easier to get going and offer far better performance at the $20-$40 and between price range. There are several antenna options to suit your layout, and they all run OpenWRT, so there are a host of open-source software options. The ability to enable or disable openvpn with a slider button is ideal. They also support a wifi-wifi bridge/routed configuration for dealing with hotel room portals and the like.

You could probably find a higher-performance wifi adapter for the RPi, but then you're starting to spend more money to maybe match the GLi router's performance. Keep in mind, nothing keeps you from using a RPi behind the router for doing other fun stuff. If you're after good, usable wifi for your setup though, I'd go with something else.

I have this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GL-iNet-GL-AR150-Pre-installed-Performance-Programmable/dp/B015CYDVG8/

You can also turn it into a Pineapple or flash DD-Wrt (tried both). They ship with a custom version of OpenWrt that has a uboot safe mode with web gui, which is handy if you fuck up.

I've settled with LEDE (open-wrt 'fork')
https://lede-project.org/toh/views/toh_fwdownload?dataflt%5BModel*~%5D=AR150 which has the luci-theme-material and adblock package in their default repo.

For about 30£, you could also get this one with slightly better specs (haven't tried it, though)

I've had some cheap ones that couldn't handle captive portals. This one can. It passes the portal through to your device to let you sign in. And yes, it will replicate the source it connects to OR you can give it is own name and password.

Thank you.
This one got the antenas but twice as expensive.

Given that you game, you'll want SQM on your router. GL-iNet's devices are cheap and support SQM. Wifi range is not likely great though. You might want 2 devices for better coverage. I'm not sure how close you normally are to your router. You could also use an TP-Link Archer A6 as an additional access point.

Can you log in to your ISP router? Maybe there's something we could tweak on there. I would also download Ubiquiti WiFiman on your phone and see if there's other 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz networks nearby causing issues.

Assuming your VPN service supports OpenVPN, just search "openvpn router" and you'll find lots of hits. Something like this travel router might work for you since you only need the one port. It also looks like most nicer Asus Routers support it but that's really more router than you need for just a single device.

I like the ones with removable antennas so you can attach a directional antenna.

Would love to see if anyone uses anything like this with an external antenna. It seems like an easy option with one like this.

If you have a VPN and it's OpenVPN capable, then you could pick up a mini router like this or any cheap router than can handle OpenVPN, setup your VPN on it, and then only connect your hacked Switch to it. The Switch won't even know it's going through a VPN.
