You may be interested in a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic which can be had on Amazon for less than $400. It uses a Swiss ETA movement similar to the Stowa. In some ways, it meets in the middle between Stowa and Seiko in terms of price and quality.

Generally, for more expensive pieces, you're paying for the finishing and quality of the components, as well as the horological significance of the brand. Whether or not these things are worth it to you will depend on how much you value that sort of thing, and how much disposable income you have. I'm a student and I love my SNK809 and SKX013. I would be thrilled to own a $5000 watch, but at this point in my life, there are better things for me to spend my money on than a high-end Swiss timepiece. Perhaps when I reach a career milestone a few years down the road, I may decide to pull the trigger on a Rolex or Omega, but until then, I'll wholeheartedly enjoy my Seikos.

Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?

If the former latter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound).

A tad bit out of your budget but honestly the best non-flashy everyday watch that would get a nod from watch aficionados. If he takes care of it, it would last a lifetime.

Was a general question. Amazon offers the 70455533, a very close relative, for $401. Seems for only $25 more there’s a new one with a return guarantee. Just putting that out there.

What models are you looking at? Looks like most Khaki's I see on there have an average of 4 or 4.5 stars. Keep in mind people are more likely to leave a review when something goes wrong than when it goes well.

I've personally had mine for months, wearing it almost every day, been in rain lots of time, survived water rides at Disney World. Never swam with it, but no hint of moisture or anything.

I don't baby it and it's still in fantastic shape, not a scratch on it that I can see, no problems. Never left a review though. :)

Keeps as expected time for this movement, about 15 seconds fast per day.

Also, all watches on Amazon include a warranty, even if not from manufacturer. They have an Asurion warranty which I've heard is good, though I've never used it.

Retail price on the Khakis isn't terribly far out of your price range - they're great american made watches.

That style is called a field watch, based on classic military models dating back to WW2. Here's a couple that I like that are a little smaller and a little cheaper. Both automatic, both Swiss companies (ETA movements).

I have a certain preference for: Orient Bambino, Seiko cocktail time and the seiko presage... If you have any watches in mind that you think I'd like, your help is appreciated! And just so you know, my wrist is around 75mm. I like moderate-big watches (for example, I have the Casio MDV-106 which is 44mm and I like it, maybe I'd like a slightly smaller watch though).

i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.

In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.

For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.

The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.

Depends what you consider a decent watch... Some won't settle for anything but a watch with an in-house Swiss movement. If horology is important to you, wait and save up. But, if you don't care about this, I must say that the Hamilton Khaki/Pilot lineup is fantastic. The ETA movement is solid and will be relatively cheap to service. I used to have a Hamilton Khaki, until I drank a bit too much and it fell off my wrist because I had a cheapo band, and well I was drunk. I was/still am devastated.

If you're going to drop anything over $200 on a watch, I'd consider getting a mechanical watch.

They're not electronic at all, they rely solely on precision engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control to function at all -- and they are accurate to within 0.01%.

To me, that is really cool, and I feel a lot of pride that people worked so hard on something so small. I also like the sweep seconds over the jump-pause of a quartz movement.

Cons: mechanical watches are more expensive to manufacture, have much lower accuracy (0.01% error for a quartz watch would be horrible, they're at 2-3 orders of magnitude better than that, for even crap quartz), and require you to wear them (automatic) or handwind them (manual wind) daily to function.

I would not necessarily recommend them, but Fossil has a wide selection you can see what looks you like. Their durability is pretty low and they charge a lot (even in a high margin industry, they charge a lot for how much watch you get), but they have most modern watch styles.

Hamilton Field Khaki Here with metal bracelet is a really flexible. It can be dressed up or down, and goes with other straps, like leather or nato. When you asked for versatile, that was the first watch I thought of.

I mean, there's the Maratac Pilot/Mid Pilot, but that may be a little thick for your liking. That Rodina you have in the album is already within your price range too, look here. I'm not 100% sure that the Rodina is water resistant though. I personally like something like this Hamilton, and you can probably find one used that's within your price range.

As for your questions, the automatic shouldn't be too loud, but if you're really trying to hear it, you might. Some people actually like that. Now, it's not going to sound like you have a ratchet stuck to your wrist, but I'm saying that it could be noticeable. As for the second question, it really depends on how hard you fall, and where you fall. If you're falling off your bike all the time, you may want a quartz watch that will be able to handle more of a beating. If you don't plan on falling off your bike that often, or at speed, it shouldn't be that much of an issue. As for the vibrations, that's another variable. If you're riding across gravel and speedbumps, that might be a bigger problem than, say, a flat road or sidewalk. If your commute is really rigorous, you might just want to buy a quartz watch and not have to worry about anything except the battery. But I do feel that there is something to be said for the novelty of having a tiny little clock with gears and springs and levers and jewels ceaselessly beating away on your wrist. Just my two cents.

Hamilton Khaki is my weekender. Goes with any outfit. Also a good entry-level automatic watch brand imo.

I have always been a fan of The Hamilton Khaki watches, something like this watch. Clean and not too flashy, but great workmanship and well worth the money.

Still think the Hamilton Khaki Field (38mm) is one of the best values for an everyday watch. I've done a bit of research and this watch seems to be well reviewed on all the watch forums I've visited.

Maybe you could use the remainder on a nice pair of boots? Both will last you a lifetime.

Seiko makes a couple of 4R36 based ones which are nice, the 4R36 is basicly a cheaper version of the 6R15 with the mainspring and escapement from the 7S series, but hacking and handwinding

A Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic may suit you well if you like simplicity. They can be had around $350 and in my personal opinion, along with the rest of the Khaki series, are the only watches worth buying between $150 and $3000.

That price range is just so chock full of watches with sub-par movements. Many are quartz, which is awesome for low end watches, but not worth much over $100. The only quartz watch I would ever pay over $100 for is a Bulova Accutron, but that's only because all the early NASA space capsules (and most of the earliest astronauts) carried Accutrons. Other than that, that price range is an endless ocean of Submariner and Speedmaster "homages" that come from brands with no heritage and they're boring, boring, boring. Sure, they may look okay and keep great time, but you can get those features for well under $100.

For the record, I wear a cheap Seiko 5 Automatic. I won't spend over $150 on a watch until I can afford a SS GMT Master.

lol. it's funny, now that i have a nice watch i can tell how nice someone else's watch is by the crystal alone. i'm not a snob (i like a good timex), but the only thing that looks nice from afar is a sapphire crystal.

Hmm... That i started with? I had a seiko pilot chronograph once that i considered keeping, but it was too large on my wrist. I've also had some retro seikos that i like. I currently have a vintage Hamilton Quartz that i'm not even sure if i want to sell. I probably will because i saving up for the Seiko SRP311 and the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto.

Through trades i have gotten a Citizen eco drive calibre 8651, which i've since sold, and a Hamilton GG-W-113 USAF pilot watch, which i'm planning on keeping forever, or atleast until i have someone to pass it on to.

I'm treating myself to my first real watch after graduating and am deciding between two different Hamilton watches. If you could comment below whether you would buy 1 or 2 and maybe a reason why, that would be amazing!

I'm not a fan of the Hamilton's muted bezel, but I like the dial the best. Hamilton has two other versions of the Khaki that have better looking bezels, this and this.

As far as the other two goes, I like the SKX013 slightly better. I'm a fan of the dots as opposed to the typical lines you'd see in most watches.
