I have a thermostat with a remote module. During the day it takes the temperature from the main unit downstairs and at night takes it from a remote RF model. It's a Hunter 44668 Comfort Saver: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00127O3FI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Simpler but much cheaper than the nest!
