It's easy to ape Nintendo's success with innovating the analog stick while avoiding the mistakes required by innovation. It's not fair to reference the dual-shock as evidence that "the PSX was simply a better designed console", though, since the original PSX controller had 100% fewer analog sticks than the N64 controller.
Also, it's incorrect to say that proper use of the analog stick makes the D-Pad superfluous- many modern games use the left analog stick for movement and the D-pad for menu interaction.

Look at the picture of the original PSX controller above and tell me what kind of camera buttons it has. Oh, that's right- none, because Mario 64 hadn't shown Sony what a good 3D platformer looked like yet.
