It's not pretty lol. We tried to zip tie everything together to make it at least understandable haha

EDIT: Hijacking this post since there are a LOT of common questions. Oh and /u/smilenataliew is the wife :)

FAQ:

>How did you connect everything to the TV/What adapters did you use?

NES through Gamecube (bottom 4): We have a 4-input composite switcher (those Yellow/Red/White cables) between the N64 and Gamecube, connected to our TV's 3.5mm composite port (which looks like a headphone jack), which we convert with cables like these. We do not recommend a composite to HDMI converter, as the output (might) look garbled from older systems (it did for us).

Wii: Component cables to HDMI converter, then into a remote controlled HDMI switcher (switcher and controller can both be seen to the left of Kirby Amiibo/the Wii)

WiiU & Switch: HDMI to the same HDMI switcher

>Don't the controllers just fall out when you open the case? How are they secured?

The NES controller is resting on a WiiU controller stand, oddly enough!
The SNES controller is the most finnicky. It's slightly leaning back on its own cords, but it's hard to get it to stay put.
The N64 controller is leaned against a stack of N64 games--it's definitely the system my wife and I have the most games for already!
The Gamecube controller is leaning against two other stacked gamecube controllers.
The Wii controller is just just leaning up against a thick piece of cardboard (more cardboard is also holding up the NES and SNES systems since the bottom of their doors would block view of the systems otherwise. My wife intends to wrap all cardboard with contact paper to make it all more decorative, she's very crafty!)
The WiiU has the same controllers as the Wii, except for the screen one, which is on a stand that actually charges the unit while it sits on top of the WiiU system!
The Switch controller actually stands on its own with the joy cons connected to them, but I've decided to actually show the charging station we bought with the joy cons connected to it so that they'll always be charged and ready to go!

>Where are the games?

Behind the controllers! In fact the N64 controller is leaning on a stack of them.

>Cable management? Do you have controller extenders?

Lots of zip ties in the back, and as for controller cables, we bought ~100 of those velcro straps for cords so we can wrap them up for neat display storage without wrapping the cords around the controllers. We also have extension cords for all corded controllers since the consoles don't exactly come out of the unit!

>Where can I get the display case?

It's a piece of furniture so it's a bit expensive, but it's definitely what we wanted after searching for a couple weeks! It's on Amazon

>You could have just emulated it all!

I love having and playing on the original consoles, but emulation is also awesome!

>Where's the Virtual Boy?

It doesn't connect to the TV so I didn't feel the need to get it for this project, but I DO want it for my collection! (Also kids should wait a bit before they play with a 3D device, even the 3DS)

>Where's Nintendo's even older console, the Color TV-Game?/Where's the 64DD?

Those were released Japan only, but I might still want to get them! I believe the controller and the console for Color TV-Game are both one unit, and space is limited, so it might be tough to integrate it if I want to get it!

>Where's the TV? CRT??

Mounted on the wall above the mantle. Sorry, no CRT...yet.

>PHOTOSHOPPED!/I swear I saw this before!

lol why would anyone photoshop this? Definitely real. I'll provide a few more images if I can. And definitely my setup! Though I'm sure I'm not the first to do something similar.

>lol fake niece

The niece and story are real, but if I'm being perfectly honest this is more for me than her haha

Also, N64 emulation on PC has actually overtaken the N64 itself as the best way to play your favourite old games! It sounds positively heretical, but hear me out.

The N64 has some built-in pseudo-anti-aliasing in the form of blurriness on its analog video out, even with the S-video cables. If you want to get a clear signal on a modern TV, you'd have to use a sharpening upscaler like a Framemeister, which runs well north of $300.

Conversely, Project64 is free, and runs well even on modest computers from the mid-2000's. Even a netbook can run Perfect Dark uprendered to 1080p at 60fps. And man, these old games are even more beautiful than you remember when you see them in true high def. Or b

And, if you get some of these, you get both a lag-free wireless experience, and the most authentic feeling thumbstick you can find short of a genuine new-in-box N64 controller from 1996. Or, if you already have good controllers, a couple of these and a few minutes to calibrate each controller will let you and your buddies huddle around the console in true N64 fashion.

u/Applegravy · 1 pointr/n64

while an eventual obtaining of the collection again complete with the boxes and manuals sounds like a much better collection, and while I'm sure there's nothing else you could do to get that car if you're putting up the N64, I hope you know that a set CiB will cost at least twice what you'd sell everything for.

that said, if you really have to sell, at the very least, I think you should keep your controllers, get this adapter and emulate everything. I have that adapter. I love mine. it's very picky with third party controllers, and most don't work, such as my Madcatz turbo controllers, so your SuperPad might not work. but it likes official controllers like the other two controllers you have in that image, and it also likes close replicas like these.

and be aware, on Project 64, I had to find a new controller plugin and change to it for it all to work. after I configured it, Darkman's worked with the controller perfectly. Jabo(which is normally the default one) wouldn't read the joystick properly and N-Rage wouldn't let me use the C buttons. it was very strange. but, the adapter is plug and play, so no drivers to find for that.

the emulator with the actual controllers is the second best experience for it. keyboard controls are just awkward for the N64, and other USB controllers really change the experience because of how peculiar an N64 controller is. even with the occasional graphical glitches through emulation not being perfected, most can be solved between using Project 64 1.6 and 1.7. Space Station Silicon Valley, for example, in 1.6, doesn't show the power cells properly, but 1.7 fixes this.

if nothing else, I hope that my advice for emulating helps lessen the pain for you. I can only imagine what I'd be like without my N64. a lot of really great games I have actual rom cartridges of, and others I emulate with the same setup I suggested you give a try, and for very many, I do both.

u/Offended_Christian · 0 pointsr/videos

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression a lot of speed runs were done with emulators, especially on older console games. I figure it's easier to stream and all. There might be some kind of verification of the rom file and emulator that is being used, but I really have no idea to that extent.

For N64, I've always used an emulator called Project 64, specifically version 1.6 as it seems to be the most stable with a variety of games. You can download the game files, i.e. roms, from sites like Emuparadise.

For the controller you can just map keys to your liking on the keyboard through the Pj64 settings, but I definitely prefer using an original controller. So if you're looking to go that route, try to buy an original controller or two from Craigslist or a retro gaming shop. Then you'll need to get an usb adapter to connect it to your PC. You'll need to do some configuring/calibrating to get it functioning correctly with Pj64, but it's not overly complicated and I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials out there. Edit: There are third party N64 controllers and even some that have direct USB plugs, but I've never been happy with the quality or feel of them.

If you're looking to get into competitive speed runs, definitely do some more research as there may be specific recommendations for hardware and software setups. What I wrote above is all just from personal experience for gaming leisurely. I still have an original Nintendo 64 console, but I play some games on emulator because I do not have the cartridge or feel like spending the money on one. Hope this helps.

u/frakkingcylon · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

I use a X360 controller (map the C buttons to the right analog stick). If you want to play with an actual N64 controller you will need to buy an adapter.

As far as you laptop goes, what matters most is your video card. I was able to play this on an old dell latitude d810, but that was without the upgraded texture pack.

It runs really well on my gaming rig though.

Here are the minimum requirements.

  • Intel Pentium 3 1.5Ghz or higher or AMD Athlon 1.5 GHz or higher
  • 512MB RAM or more
  • nVidia GeForce FX or later or ATI Radeon 9500 or later
  • 1GB or more free hard drive space
  • Creative Soundblaster Live! or higher
  • Adaptoid and original Nintendo N64 controller for each player
  • Microsoft Windows XP with latest updates.

    Optional extras:

  • video card with TV out and a high quality widescreen television set
  • high quality stereo speakers supporting dolby virtual surround
  • USB hub and/or controller extension cables
  • genuine Nintendo Rumble Pak for each player

    Good Luck!
u/Zero_Risk · 2 pointsr/emulation

I've tried some of the usb controllers and wasn't satisfied. They're often too light-weight or the buttons aren't as responsive, or some little nagging thing. Personal recommendation would be to go for the real deal and get an N64 to usb Controller Adapter or two. They're surprisingly easy to use (nearly plug-and-play, but you need to configure the emulator settings so it knows which is controller 1, controller 2, etc.).

That being said, it sounds like you might be happier getting the real deal hardware. Nothing will feel spot on compared to the original hardware. Plus, if it sounds fun for your bachelor party, who's to say it can't be something fun to do any other time you're all together in the future, right?

Congrats on getting hitched; hope it goes well for you.

u/SturgeonMcGuai · 2 pointsr/n64

I recommend a Sony Trinitron if you get a CRT. These sets are the most well-built among tube TVs, which matters a lot when you're looking for a 10-30 year old appliance. Sony also held a patent on the best CRT technology for almost the entire time CRT sets were relevant, so Trinitrons have objectively better picture quality than any competing sets of the day. Make sure you get the remote with the TV in case you need to adjust the picture. 20"-25" is a good size for a multiplayer gaming TV in the corner, but you might want an extra set of hands to help you move anything larger than 24" depending on how far you'll have to carry it.

Also, for $20-$25 online, you can get an S-Video cable for the N64. S-video is a much clearer video signal than the standard yellow-RCA-jack composite video, which is itself just compressed S-video. Here is a comparison between the two. If you decide to get one of these I cannot recommend ANY generic cables since they're almost always terribly cheap and it's a matter of luck whether they will work, so get a Nintendo-brand cable for either composite or S-video.

You can also get replacement N64 joysticks online, (like here or here) some of them arguably superior to the originals. A lot of those Mario Party minigames will kill N64 joysticks, especially OG sticks, which need to be re-lubricated (I recommend white lithium grease) after twenty years of use. There are also plenty of kooky, unorthodox third-party controllers for the N64 which, by virtue of their design, add some challenge to games you thought you were good at.

Sorry for the wall of text, there's just a lot of technical stuff that goes a long way in improving the retro gaming experience, and most of the high-end and cutting-edge stuff of yesterday is obscure knowledge now. S-Video will give you the biggest bang for your buck, and combining that with a compatible Trinitron will get you ~90% of what hundreds of dollars of equipment can do. And that means more games. =)

If you have good N64 controllers, consider a USB Adapter.

If you want something basic, go with this Mayflash N64 USB Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Mayflash+n64+adapter&qid=1570001200&sr=8-1

I haven't tried the Mayflash adapter yet, but I gave one to a friend, and she seems happy with it.

If you want something really good, try this one. It even has Controller Pak and Rumble Pak Support!: https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/dual_n64_to_usb_adapter/index.php

Raphnet makes a ton of really good adapters for lots of different consoles.

Happy Gaming!

I have actually done this exact project before, even with NRF24L01+ modules.

Here's a few resources you'll want:
https://code.google.com/p/micro-64-controller/wiki/Protocol
https://github.com/brownan/Gamecube-N64-Controller
http://web.archive.org/web/20151030122223/http://www.eecs.umich.edu/courses/eecs373/Lec/StudentW14/N64%20Controller.pdf

This site used to have a ton of good information, but now it's down. That's where I got my info, but the stuff I gave you above should be enough.

In my controller I had:

  • A bare ATmega328p
  • A replacement N64 joystick, gutted, so I was only using the analog joystick
  • 400mAh li-ion battery with a 2.5v regulator to power both the ATmega and the NRF24L01+

I took the chip out of the N64 controller and wired all the buttons and the joystick to the ATmega. For power savings, the positive line for the joystick was hooked up to a GPIO pin so I could switch it off. Every 5ms the controller wakes up, reads the buttons and joystick state, transmits it, then goes to sleep again. With some other optimizations, I got the controller to draw less than 1mA while using it. :)

On the receiver side I had a custom board with an STM32 microcontroller, but you can do it with a Teensy 3. No voltage regulator needed, the N64 uses 3.3V for the controllers.
I recommend using something faster than 16MHz because while you can make it work, you'll need to do a bit of assembly and it's a bit more fiddly. Use a Teensy 3.0 at 72MHz and you'll have much more headroom.

You need to use the links I gave you to re-implement the N64 controller protocol in the Teensy. Every time the N64 requests controller data, just give it the latest info you received from the controller.

I'm not sure how much you know so this might all sound like a bit much! I'll be happy to try to help you but this sort of project will be very difficult if you don't have decent coding skills.

Here's the thing with ordering these. I ordered from the same amazon listing twice and got a different version of the stick both times.

If you get one with a rubbery tip, you're going to experience the issues he mentioned in his video. Large dead zone, less degrees of freedom, very small area recognized as "slightly" pushing (making it really hard to walk slowly).

But if you get a plasticy one that has "V3" on the bottom, you won't experience those issues. The one I have with "V3" on the bottom has a slightly larger deadzone than the n64, but has all the degrees of freedom. And it's easy to walk slowly with.

The rubber one is still better than a loose stick, so for $11 I think it's a good option.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MRZAUC

You can also find imitations of the original n64 stick on amazon and ebay (just search n64 replacement stick). Though I imagine you'd run into similar issues.

Personally, I feel the best controller for the n64 is the Hori one. But those are expensive these days.

u/MamaLuigi9001 · 2 pointsr/emulation

Reposting since I still haven't had an answer.

So I am planning to purchase a N64 Adaptoid that someone is selling and I have a few questions that would influence my decision on purchasing it.

1.Should I even buy an adapter? There are 3rd party wireless and wired N64 look a like controllers for PC. Should I consider those?

2.Is the Adaptoid compatible with Windows 10 64-bit?

3.Does Adaptoid work well with N64 emulators? Specifically Project 64.

4.Is this adapter or this [adapter] (https://www.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-N64-Controller-Adapter-Pc/dp/B002B9FIUU) better than the Adaptoid? What are the Pros and Cons of each?

5.Is there any video showcasing the N64 Adaptoid? I would like to see how the pak peripherals work. (ex. Rumble, Transfer, Memory Paks.)

  • Do third party peripherals work with Adaptoid? Would they work in Project 64? (ex. Tremor Pak Plus, Tilt Pak.)

  • How do memory paks work with the Adaptoid? Can you edit saves and back them up?

  • When using this adapter with the VRU, does it work properly and does it work with Project 64?

  • Using the Transfer pak, is it possible to extract the save file of a Game Boy Color game to my PC?

6.Is the Adaptoid Plug and Play? Or do I need to install specific drivers to get it working?

7.Can I use this for other things as well? Such as for steam games and other emulators like Dolphin Emulator.

    Thank you ahead of time.

This is my opinion, so take it as you will;

Many here are saying specialty shops for games and systems, and frankly I just don't see the point of that. blah blah nostalgia but bottom line is that paying what the thing costs new from a reseller (no profit to the original developers of the hardware or software) is hugging the line between "Stupid" and "Stupid Hipster".

Get your Sega Controller, SNES Controller, NES Controller, N64 controller... or just a good general controller which can be used for many games. I own a few of these and I'll tell you right now that overall they feel very authentic. I have the black version of that N64 controller for example and once I start playing I can't tell the difference between it and the original.

And then get a good pack of ROMs to get you started.

There are so many advantages to emulating these systems that it's hard to decide where to begin. Simple, reliable, and you can fit whole libraries of games on a thumb drive. From right now I could be playing any NES title you can imagine in a minute, and switch to any N64 title in the same time without screwing with cords and boxes taking up space.

---

I respect the fact that piracy is a no-no. However this money is not going to the people who make the games. It's going to resellers who are charging you for nostalgia, so you can use unsupported equipment which can and will screw up on you (if you don't get bored with it and wonder why you dropped a few hundred bucks on games from when you were 10).

I actually use an N64 on my PC for games like Persona 4 (emulated) and Street Fighter IV. USB-N64 adapters can be found for around $20. This Amazon listing appears to be the same converter I have, and you can find it listed on eBay by searching for "N64 USB" (sans quotes).

Warning: The vast, vast majority of N64-USB converters out there (mine included) tend to be rather hit and miss. I wouldn't call them "garbage," because when they do work, they work beautifully. The problem is, they only work with a small percentage of controllers. This isn't a problem with the adapter, but rather, it's due to the way that Nintendo manufactures the controllers. The converter that I use (linked above) only works with one of the five N64 controllers I have tried it with.

The exception to "n64-usb converters only work with a small fraction of controllers," I have been told, is the adaptoid. (You can find it by searching "adaptoid" on Google or eBay search or whatever.) This converter supposedly has 100% compatibility. However, it is out of production, very rare, and very expensive. When they pop up on eBay they usually go for $80+

In short, I would advise against trying to get a bunch of N64 adapters for you and your friends. If you're lucky, you might get one of your controllers to work with an adapter, but don't count on it.

If your friends have Xbox 360 controllers or PS3 controllers, those can be used. If you have a bluetooth adapter for your PC, Wii controllers can also be used. Xbox controllers can also be easily modded to work with PC. (The connection they use is actually USB, it just uses a proprietary plug.) If you have any of these controllers lying around already, I'd recommend using them just because you can, but I wouldn't recommend going out and buying them because they're more expensive than what you'd get from Logitech.

Word of advice about N64 controllers, if you find yourself using them (either with the actual console or because you got a working adapater): the joystick tends to become loose and worn out on the inside from age. If you ever see powder or a pasty build-up around the joystick's seat, that dust is plastic that is being ground up inside the controller. The best thing you can do for an old N64 controller is to replace the joystick. I bought new joysticks on eBay, $6 for a set of two, and installing them makes old controllers feel like new.

u/AriMaeda · 1 pointr/minines

First, the query "n64 controller tight stick" on eBay tends to find original controllers for $20-30. I've bought two controllers advertised in this fashion, and both felt like they'd never been used.

I'm also keeping up on SteelSticks64. (site) (twitter)
They're in the process of making joysticks out of steel with the intention of emulating the original feel. They'll likely be quite pricey, but should function as a permanent replacement. I'm also checking in regularly to this project, which is looking to make injection-molded copies of the original parts.

Lastly, you can buy an aftermarket joystick. This Gamecube-style joystick is quite nice. I've got it in one of my controllers now, and while it's not quite the same, it's very nice. I've found most games to not play any different with it, and I'm happy not worrying about grinding the stick down any more.

u/valve_crates · 1 pointr/nintendo

You can check either the Brawler 64 or the Tribute 64. They the best “modern” alternatives for N64 controllers imo.

If you prefer using your GameCuber controller there’s a ton of adapters around. Personally I would not recommend them since depending on the game you’re going to be spending a lot of time reconfiguring buttons. The layout doesn’t translate well between the two.

If you like the original form factor of the N64 controller there’re stick replacements on Amazon. Reviews are all over the place for those, some people like them, others not so much. But they’re cheap so maybe its worth a try.

Now as a fan of the original N64 joystick I am also obligated to mention Steel sticks 64 who sell parts that you can use to turn your broken N64 stick into an stainless steel behemoth. Several speed runners that are used to the original design use these because if properly maintained (aka: add a little bit of lubricant every once in a while) they’re pretty much indestructible and will last forever.

u/diddaykong · 1 pointr/retrogames

If it makes things easier, the Brawler64 by RetroFighters is a modern take on the N64 controller. Imo the plastic molding on the controller feels a little cheap - as well as the joystick, and it’s not going to be the best controller for shooters due to the sensitivity. But it’s still one of the best options out there for the N64. I actually have five of these controllers (one of each funtastic cooored variant they have released)

The Tribute 64 is another great option. It has more of a retro feel, almost like an N64 controller meets the GameCube controller.

I included Amazon links, but if you decide to purchase them then also consider ordering through their official websites or Castlemania games as well to support the small businesses :)

u/BangkokPadang · 2 pointsr/n64

Since no one has posted an informative explanation about just what exactly "goes in there," here is everything you need to know to make an informed decision about which part you need.

The N64 shipped with a 4MB ram cartridge, called the "Jumper Pack." This is what came stock with every N64.

They look like this: http://imgur.com/UBEJfa3

Several years after the N64 launched, nintendo released what was called an "expansion pak." It was an 8MB RAM expansion that replaced the original "jumper pack"

The N64 "Expansion Pak" looks like this: http://imgur.com/68miFsX

Essentially, if you have an N64 that doesn't have anything in that slot, you want to purchase an "Expansion Pak" because every single game will work with it, and many games will even have enhanced resolution or additional game modes when used with it.

The stock "jumper pack" will not work with games such as Donkey Kong 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, or the single player portion of Perfect Dark, as they all require the upgraded "Expansion Pak"

Be sure and find a Nintendo Brand "Expansion Pak," because the third party ones have a tendency to be glitchy, and not last for very long.

Here is a list of vendors for the correct part you need from Amazon, starting at around $25 with shipping.

Good Luck

u/yeetskeeturboi · 3 pointsr/SuperMario64

People frown upon emulators since there is a tiny difference, but if you don’t have the money, use an emulator. If you have some to spare, buy an n64. Although I would start with the emulator because save states will be very helpful when starting out.

Edit: I would recommend a controller kinda like this, just, if you use an actual n64 controller, don’t use an original because the stick wears down over time. Buy a slightly modified one from amazon.

u/OkidoShigeru · 3 pointsr/wiiu

PDP have yet to produce a controller that doesn't suck - just read reviews for controllers like this. Definitely go with the Hori option, they have almost always produced controllers that are on par with first-party offerings, if not surpassing them.

EDIT: I should probably mention that above both of those options I would still recommend using the wired GC controller adaptor that Nintendo are releasing, along with an official GC controller, as obviously I can say with 100% certainty that the controllers are comfortable and well-made. But if you have your heart set on one of the Mario-themed controllers, definitely go with Hori, I am willing to bet that it will at least be of passable quality.

u/TemptCiderFan · 1 pointr/gaming

It's the best compromise. Like I said, the Retron 5 technically uses emulation rather than original hardware to power the games, so it's not going to be a totally 1:1 experience when compared to the original hardware. The only difference between this and a Raspberry Pi solution is that you're using your own carts, because you can even get a USB 2-port N64 controller adaptor for like, $20.

To be honest, the only advantage the Retron has is that you get to use your old saves on the carts, but to be honest I'd be leery of doing that these days: We're already well-beyond the average lifespan of the save batteries inside N64 carts, and even the ones which use flash memory instead aren't 100% reliable anymore.

I'm pretty sure that you can buy an adapter that will allow you to connect one to your pc. Here's an example.

I use a mayflash adapter myself, to play melee and project m online with friends over Dolphin using a gamecube controller.

Essentially, your dream is already possible. Just buy an adapter and you're good to go. If you have any other questions about setting it up, just pm me. :)

u/kazoodac · 4 pointsr/n64

People have already correctly advised you to get an analog to VGA converter box, but I'd like to chime in and suggest you get a Nintendo S-Video cable as well. S video looks much better than composite, and the better signal you feed into the VGA box, the better the output will be.

u/AngelicBabyGirl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You could go old school with this Nintendo 64 24-Game Case, I need one! XP

This would be pretty cool for your controllers!

For more efficient storage these types of boxes would be perfect!

u/Sinnocent · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I see your new obsession is N64 games! Awesome. I think you'd enjoy this item - you could also play N64 ROMs on your computer should you want to "try before you buy" for your collection!

I would love this or this (or any combination of things from my Nail list, really). Thanks for the offer and as Mario would say... WAHOO!

u/trinitis · 1 pointr/retrogaming

My thoughts - Normally when going to college, the best tool is a laptop. It takes up much less space in the dorm and allows you to take your computer with you to classes. As such, I would go with emulation + a decent TV + an HDMI output on said laptop. Pick up one of these -

http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Smartjoy-PC-Controller-Adapter-Converter/dp/B0009VIZSY/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721078&sr=8-11&keywords=SNES+USB+adapter

and a solid SNES controller. That will get you set for any NES and SNES game you want to play. If you want to expand your library a little more, pick up one of these -

http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721145&sr=8-6&keywords=SNES+USB+adapter

and a N64 controller. Then, as a small (10 minutes, tops) project, get one of these -

http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Joystick/dp/B000F7V2GO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1397721237&sr=8-2&keywords=N64+stick+replacement

and you'll have an amazing N64 controller and a bunch of new games to add to your play list.

u/humor4fun · 1 pointr/EmulationOnAndroid

Great stuff man. Love the details and feedback. One more question though. You talked about doing a GameCube joystick mod, and you talked a bit about the joystick. What is your review of the joystick that came with the 8bitdo controller? Can it be replaced by one of those high quality replacement sticks for the n64 controllers $12 on Amazon

I'm looking at doing something like that combo as a gift for my brolo el coñado.

u/shoryukencallme · 3 pointsr/n64

These dust covers are actually a third party kind I found on Amazon. I think Nintendo shipped them without any kind dust protection back in the day, probably hoping to sell accessories.
https://www.amazon.com/Global-Game-GGG0030-Nintendo-64-Cover/dp/B00AAIDNTW/

I definitely agree with you about that there's are misperceptions about the quality of the N64's library. Sure, not every game is Super Mario 64, but there's still a lot of fun games or games worth playing because they really tried something unique.

u/jmt627 · 6 pointsr/n64

Speaking from experience just head to your local video game store (one thats sells used stuff) then buy the best three used nintendo brand controllers they have. Just check to make sure all the buttons are good the sticks don't matter at this point.

Now hit up amazon and look for these http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369407445&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+joystick

These joysticks are not like the ones that come with the nintendo controllers they don't have the ball joint at the bottom that wears out. Look at these other sticks for comparison. http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Joystick/dp/B000F7V2GO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369407445&sr=8-2&keywords=n64+joystick

You can see how they are different. The joysticks are easy to swap out and you will not wear them out unlike the traditional joysticks. You will always have "tight sticks"

Hope this helps you out man.

u/khedoros · 2 pointsr/n64

An adapter turns out to be the easy part.

The joypad mod I was seeing in my search earlier looks like it supports 1.11.2, but not the current version. Another one I found looked like it only supports PS4 and XB1 controllers.

So the answer may be "yes, if you're willing to play an older version of the game". Or, I guess look for something like joy2key.

u/senichi · 3 pointsr/speedrun
  • I personally use this adapter and an actual N64 controller. I also own an N64 and play games on that (but can only stream PC, so can't stream console). It's really nice because I can use the same controller for console and emulator. I used to run with this controller, and it worked great, but I didn't like it because it was awkward when I played on console with an N64 controller. I know there are also a lot of emulator streamers that just use an Xbox 360 controller because they have native support with windows. Basically, use whatever is comfortable for you.

  • I just Google "___ N64 rom" and take either the top or second result. There's not really going to be a "safe" way to download roms because it's illegal and nobody is there to regulate it. It's always going to be a risk, but it usually isn't. At least I've never had any problems.

  • Amazon.com has the best prices I've seen. The only real competitors to that I can think of would be local game stores, which would still be more expensive, but the price is close when you add shipping costs.
u/LonelyCannibal · 4 pointsr/emulation

>1) On the N64 you cannot get vibration + saves unless you switch back and forth between Rumble and Controller Paks.

Oh yeah?

>2) Proper use of the analog stick made the D-Pad and the L button superfluous.

It's easy to ape Nintendo's success with innovating the analog stick while avoiding the mistakes required by innovation. It's not fair to reference the dual-shock as evidence that "the PSX was simply a better designed console", though, since the original PSX controller had 100% fewer analog sticks than the N64 controller.

Also, it's incorrect to say that proper use of the analog stick makes the D-Pad superfluous- many modern games use the left analog stick for movement and the D-pad for menu interaction.

>3) Decision to go with digital camera buttons was boneheaded.

Look at the picture of the original PSX controller above and tell me what kind of camera buttons it has. Oh, that's right- none, because Mario 64 hadn't shown Sony what a good 3D platformer looked like yet.

u/Alchemisia · 2 pointsr/smashbros

2 MAJOR things: invest on a stick, like, for real. It REALLY helps your practice man. You have no idea how different the game feels when trying to adjust to a different controller. http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Controller-Original-Grey/dp/B000PJHAD6 It isn't even that expensive, REALLY worth it. You can get a sick Mayflash with it so that you can plug it in for online play :)
Second thing is... don't forget to sign up! The deadline is really soon. Good luck lad :D

u/edge_ · 2 pointsr/trees

You could also get something like this if you already have n64 controllers, it's slightly cheaper and works great! Also let's you play with a friend :)

u/Viscerae · 2 pointsr/gaming

It's actually one of those cheap N64 replacement sticks you can find all over Ebay and Amazon.

Emphasis on "cheap". They look and feel nice, but the pots conversion is total trash and you get some hefty input lag.

But programming your own chip is a great alternative that will work perfectly. Gonna cost you quite a bit more than 10 cents though, that's for sure.

u/BabushkaSlayer · 2 pointsr/smashbros

I'd go with this if they are tourney legal. Not sure on it, but my friend bought 4 of these and 4 used original controllers and they are the best I've ever used.

u/frewp · 3 pointsr/speedrun

Ok, then I will definitely go with the Gameshark. I have no idea what you mean by the keycode, care to explain so I don't screw myself over? LOL
And I didn't notice how cheap some of these are http://www.amazon.com/GameShark-Pro/dp/B00000K4E1/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414832595&sr=8-2&keywords=gameshark if this is the one you're talking about.
Since I have no idea what you mean by the keycode thing, if I unboxed this in the mail and put in SM64, how exactly would I get a timer + reset button to work? It's the same company by Action Replay I think, and you usually put in custom codes to alter the game, if that's what you mean by key codes. Thanks for the help btw!
Edit: I just found this on Sigs site http://siglemic.net/resources
Edit 2: I can't seem to find a quick reset level button, do you have that?

u/Sawdust_Prophet · 2 pointsr/nintendo

I used these. Takes away a little authenticity, but they feel fantastic and will probably age better. They're also very easy to swap in.

u/habisch · 3 pointsr/patientgamers

I'm a big fan of emulation. If you think you may ever want to some more N64 gaming, consider picking up one of these adapters. That, plus an n64 controller will run you less than $30 and you've set up a pretty authentic n64 experience.

Also, people have reminded you of Link to the Past, and even the original Legend of Zelda (which I'd recommend you try eventually, if nothing else to get a feel for the types of games NES had!) - keep in mind these are easily emulated and a ps3 or xbox controller will map very well.

u/jorjorbiinks · 1 pointr/consolerepair

This is the one that I've ordered. They work well! Super easy to swap out too. ~10 minute fix. We help with this kind of stuff over at r/etrorestoration as well!

u/Flying_Spaghetti_ · 1 pointr/n64

Cool thanks for the insight. I have been mostly playing Mario Party on my original N64 but I don't even have s-video so it looks pretty rough. I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002B9FIUU/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have a PC next to my TV for my Vive already anyway so we are going to try it still using the original controllers.

u/FullMetalBallsack · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I guess you are correct [after all] (http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Nintendo-64-Classic-Enabled-Controller/dp/B009D3HSTG/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1402787463&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=usb+n64+controller).

Still, I think it's a cool idea, especially since you can't play with 4 controllers on a tablet/phone if they are wired. I need me my Super Smash and Mario Kart. They could hook it up to the Nintendo store and it could play nes-n64 titles upscaled to HD. It's an especially good idea since some modern TVs don't support analog inputs like they used back in the old days.

u/BrownNote · 1 pointr/gaming

What I use to really relive my childhood is an N64 to USB adapter. You can get them for $12 on Amazon. The one I linked is the one I use and it works perfectly. It supports two controllers, so you can play with a friend or buy a second one to get a 4 player game going. If you still have your old N64 controllers, that's all you need.

u/ThebossII · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

A replacement stick is usually the best way, not sure if you can get replacements. Another method i found kinda skimmed through it but it sounds like he cleans it up and uses a piece of tape to tighten up the stick again (http://www.instructables.com/id/Loose-Nintendo-64-thumbstick-repair/?ALLSTEPS) Ah i did find replacement sticks. So full out replacement would be your best bet. (https://www.amazon.ca/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC)

u/saudiaramcoshill · 0 pointsr/HoustonClassifieds

If that's the way you feel, don't buy it. But I based my price on what Amazon had things going for, and the games in particular are expensive.

Saying it was 200 in the 90s is like saying a 68 mustang was 3 grand in the 60s. At this point the price goes up because Nintendo isn't making the games anymore and a lot have broken.

For reference:
Cheapest amazon N64 - $35 with no cables. Cheapest with cables is $45

Most controllers seem to be going for about $10-15 each, and I have 3

Cheapest used Super Smash Bros. - $53

Cheapest used Super Mario 64 - $28

Cheapest used Mario Kart 64 - $48

Cheapest used NFL Blitz - $13

Total cost: $207 + Shipping and handling to get the cheapest cost without factoring in condition.

u/LUGIA_FUCKER · 4 pointsr/n64

Right here.

This little baby works like a charm, and is the closest you will ever get to the original. It's a tad stiff at first and a notch high in sensitivity, but it works flawlessly after a few playthroughs. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to replace their N64 joysticks for a cheap price and a close resemblance to the original.

u/AnEmpireOfCoins · 1 pointr/gaming

You can order just the joysticks here. It's super easy to install. Just take apart the controller, unplug bad joystick, plug in good joystick, and put it back together. I've done this a couple times for myself or friends.

u/F117Landers · 3 pointsr/gaming

Since others are listing places to shop, here are some things to shop for:

  • Expansion pak is required for some games.
  • 4 controllers. Joystick tightness is a thing; look at selling condition.
  • 4 more controllers, if buying Mario Party (wear on joystick).
  • At least 1 memory card. Internal memory wasn't a big thing until 7th gen (PS3/Xbox 360).
  • If you buy a rumble pak, then rechargeable batteries.

Some game ideas (in no order):

  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (SP)
  • Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (SP)
  • 007 Goldeneye (MP)
  • Mario Kart 64 (MP)
  • Mario 64 (SP)
  • Paper Mario RPG (SP)
  • Donkey Kong 64 (SP) - requires expansion pak
  • Pokemon Stadium (MP) & controller GBC pak
  • Mario Tennis (MP)
  • Mario Party 1, 2, or 3 (MP)
  • Wave Race (MP)

    ***

    Edit: some more games:

  • Super Smash Brothers (MP)
  • I liked Kirby 64: Crystal Shards (SP) - YMMV

I replaced a few of my worn joysticks with these:

You should get a Nyko hyper pak plus :

Nyko hyper pak plus

I have one for a good 10+ years and it never failed me, 4x the memory of a regular n64 memory card and 2 rumble mode.

Probably the best 3rd party peripheral for the system.

u/Pilcrow182 · 2 pointsr/retrogaming

There's a really good triple-adapter my friend has, for plugging SNES, PS1, and N64 controllers into USB... I forget what it's called though.

EDIT: I haven't found the exact adapter he has. It looks almost identical to this one, but his is a 3-in-1 (N64/PSX/SNES) rather than this 2-in-1 (which is missing SNES)... Might be better to get this one and have the option of using Saturn controllers instead (especially the awesome circle/3D pad)...

u/blauster · 1 pointr/gaming

I've reconditioned half a dozen n64 controllers with these. They're amazing, way better than original, and aren't using fucking optical sensors and wheels like the original. What a batshit crazy design.

Get an adapter like this.

I have a Mayflash Super Joy Box 13 that adapts GameCube to USB. All the buttons and levers work (even the analog shoulder buttons), and it only cost me $5 on eBay. I used to use that to play N64 ROMs... an old classmate burned me his ROM collection. N64 took 6 CDs.

RGB->Component->S-Video->RCA->RF.

A component cable is been created and tested, and should at some point be released, more info here:

http://www.hdretrovision.com/snes/

Without doing some more expensive modding, the short/cheap answer would be to buy a SNES S-Video cable.

Slightly better will be the component cord, and probably a little more expensive, and lastly and most expensively, mod your system for RGB output and get an RGB capable monitor.

Common practice would be to get the S-Video cable.

Here is a dedicated SNES S-Video on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KZLEFAK/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1459271470&sr=8-3&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=n64+s-video+cable

u/Toastermaface · 3 pointsr/trees

easy! 7 screws, and 2 smaller ones and the controller is apart. There were 2 or 3 more holding in the joystick unit, and it was plug and play. There was a minor bit of sanding to get it to plug in, then just put it all back together. I got it here but the price went up to $11.95 with free shipping. It's basically a new controller, and you won't have to worry about the joystick getting lose like the old ones did.

u/AbstractCalamity · 4 pointsr/patientgamers

The N64 uses 2 cables, a power cable and an A/V cable. The power cable is completely proprietary and unique to the N64 and it looks like this.

The A/V cable is a standard RCA composite (yellow-red-white) on one end. The other end is a proprietary connector shared by the N64 and Gamecube. If you have a Gamecube or find a Gamecube A/V cable, you can use it for the N64 as they use identical cables. It looks like this.

If you have a newer TV and it doesn't have composite input, you'll need to find some kind of adapter. Composite cables have 3 channels: left-audio (white), right-audio (red), and video (yellow). The audio channels (red and white) can be plugged directly into your sound system if you have RCA inputs, or they can be fairly easily adapted to whatever inputs your sound system has.

The video channel (yellow) might be more problematic. Your best bet might be to adapt from RCA to coaxel or s-video, if your TV has either of those inputs. If you're limited to HDMI and HD component (red-white-green-blue-red), search for "composite to HDMI adapter" or "composite to component adapter."

Depending on the adapter you get, you might not need to route the audio separately as I described above. Just note that it is an option available if necessity demands it.

u/Maxrdt · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Honestly I'm a much bigger fan of these that I just got from amazon instead. I don't really trust a $20 controller, and for that price you can pick up two of these. Installation was easy and it's just like playing on a classic N64 controller, but better.

This cable is just as good or better than any Monster brand S-Video cable.

But honestly, if you paid the dough for an XRGB-Mini Framemeister you should really RGB mod your N64. It's not a lot extra to put out, and it's a huge difference. The colors on S-Video are still very dull and blurred together compared to RGB. My main N64 is an RGB-modded console plugged into a Framemeister, and comparing it with S-Video is a joke.

u/iterkderjerbs · 1 pointr/n64

If you prefer to replace them yourself, the best option is SteelSticks, when they are available. The Hyperkin GameCube style joystick replacement is the next best option. However, there are dead zones with this joystick even though it is a better replacement than almost any other option out there. The resolution to that is to buy or build this.

u/mandlar · 1 pointr/n64

I love them. I'm not going to for a CIB collection. Maybe one day I'll buy the universal cases for them and print out covers. But the dust sleeves work just fine for now. You can get them off of Amazon 6 for $7 http://www.amazon.com/Global-Game-GGG0030-Nintendo-64-Cover/dp/B00AAIDNTW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=n64+dust+cover or buy them in bulk (I can't remember the site off the top of my head, I think it's the same one that sales the universal cases). I just buy them from Amazon as I need them.

u/jazz_flipside · 1 pointr/speedrun

I find it much easier to just use one of these. This splits the signal for you straight out of the console, so you can plug S-video into the capture card and the composite end into the TV. You can then split the audio if you want, or put one audio channel into the TV and one in the card (in which case you'd have to make sure the audio is mixed to both channels), or both into the card (in which case you'd have to listen through your capture program). I do the latter.

I can give you some sample videos of what this looks like, recorded with Amarec/LAGS codec. For such a simple set of equipment you get about as good of quality as you're going to get out of a normal N64.

u/Hawkeye26 · 0 pointsr/nostalgia

hmm never saw this, saw a fix that used scotch tape but i thought that it would be to unreliable. I decided to get the redesigned joystick on amazon, looks more like a gamecube stick (Here). Though you can get the normal n64 joystick (Here). Was thinking of getting the normal n64 joystick for my other controller, just in case i don't like this new one. But, so far so good. I'll have to look up the springs, see how much they cost and how much of a hassle they are to get into place. The joystick is really easy to replace, just took awhile to take out 10+ screws that have been screwed into plastic for 10+ years.

For controllers, pick up any OEM controller you like then, if the stick is shot, replace it with an aftermarket one.

I've been using some GameCube-like analog sticks from here [0] to repair my old controllers. Some don't like them but to me they work and feel great.

There's also CWSFDavid who is working to 3D print some stockalike sticks! [1]

Lastly, if you want to "splurge" again, look into Hori controllers. They're probably the highest quality non-OEM controller you can get.

However, On the computer you can emulate games by using an emulator such as project64 and download roms (virtual rips of the cartridges) from a website such as emuparadise and emulate them on your computer. If you're in Europe, Scart is by far the best choice. It offers excellent video quality compared to what you get from RCA cables. However, if you are not in Europe, it is unlikely that your TV will support Scart. The next best option would be an S-Video cable which can be used with the majority of TVs in North America and other regions. It is a large step up from the signal carried over RCA, but it is not good as Scart. I use this one for my SNES: https://www.amazon.ca/Tomee-S-Video-Cable-Nintendo-GameCube/dp/B00HRJWCBC

  1. So I know working in a fast food place is hard and a lll but it makes me mad when people who are car hopping get more tips and thus get paid more than those in drive thru. Drive thru is one of the worst places to be, you stand there trying to figure out when the customers food will be up, and you cant do anything about it! It's like getting paid to stand in a small corner feeling claustrophobic and be silently judged.

  2. I always try and look at the positives in life, I may get mad or frustrated at people or at someone but in the end I know I have family and countless friends that will be there for me!

  3. Life is what you make of it. You can try and change the world to fit your own needs or you can try and change your own little section of it knowing that if you don't like your job, or friends, or significant other, you have the ability to change that. Take the world as it is and know that in the context of the universe, the fact that you were cut off on the highway or that you were stuck in drive thru, doesn't mean that much.

  4. [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-AC-Power-Adapter-Pc/dp/B000F9JFXE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=Z2LOD62F5NIM&coliid=I296WV2FCCKA7) would help me on my quest to have a working n64 again!
u/michaelrulaz · 1 pointr/emulation

So I've been looking into controllers and I have come down to three potential conclusions on what to do.

1.) Buy a USB Controller, like this

2.) Buy a classic controller to USB device. like this

3.) Buy a small board that runs a keyboard and place it into a controller shell and map out the keys

I am just using the N64 as an example. I want all original controllers for the various games.

One other thought I had was buying the USB aftermarket controllers then cutting the cord down so its very short and wiring it to a Bluetooth transmitter and than plugging in a Bluetooth receiver into a USB hub. Then adding a LiIo battery pack to the controller. My only hurdle would be making it fit and still light weight and if I needed to have different channels for the four controllers.

u/Fidodo · 51 pointsr/gaming

I replaced a full set of 4 N64 joysticks and thought it was incredibly easy to do. The joysticks are sold as a very contained component.

You can just buy a redesigned module from, for example, amazon and use it to replace the controller's existing stick. It's plug & play so you only need a philips screwdriver.

u/troweigh · 3 pointsr/gaming

Try getting one of these, and then run an N64 emulator on your computer. I do this with my SNES controller, and it works amazingly well for that. Also, I have a slight advantage, since I have one of my computers connected to my flatscreen.

u/warrensr3 · 1 pointr/snes

It could possibly be that your cord is bad. Amazon sells replacement ones for 5 dollars. Considering Nintendo used the same AV cord for 3 generations they're pretty easy to get a hold of. http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-AV-Cable-Bulk-Packaging-Super/dp/B000035Y6B

u/SegataSanshiro · 15 pointsr/GameDeals

If you still have your old N64 controllers, you're probably better off buying an adapter instead. I have no experience with this particular USB controller, but I've noticed that third party "retro USB" controllers tend to be worse than their first party predecessors.

I preferred to use the actual N64 controller and found that this adapter works the best.

As for 360, all the research I did led me to believe that the cord was only used for charging; no data transfer takes place. The 360 still uses wireless to communicate. The driver you posted is only for the wired controller. Edit: this appears to be the case.
