I'm starting to get into Nintendo 64, and I just realized you need an expansion pak and memory card to get the system running at its best. Expansion pak to boost RAM and memory card to obviously save some bigger game data.

I'm ordering this expansion pak on Amazon, seems like a pretty standard good one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0749GSLRD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sbJRDbN1JCK7R

My question: is this a memory card, an expansion pak or both? And if it's one or the other, do yall have a good other to recommend?

why do I always get downvoted for valid questions

There are a number of solutions that involve plugging the controller into the Wii Remote so that the Wii U will read them as a Classic Controller.

For GameCube, you've got a couple of options. You can go with this adapter, which lets you use your existing GameCube controller. There's also this controller from Hori, which is an actual Classic Controller in the exact shape of the GameCube controller. I have both, and they both work well, but I prefer the Hori controller.

For N64, there's this adapter. It's the same idea as the GameCube adapter linked above. I haven't used this one myself, so I can't tell you from experience how well it works.

Because all of these options register as Classic Controllers, they have the advantage of being compatible with any Wii or Wii U game that uses it, which is very many of them. For N64 games on the Wii U Virtual Console, you'll be able to adjust the button mapping in the options menu to make sure everything plays just the way you remember it.

I hope this is helpful. Enjoy your Wii U, and welcome to the club!

WOW! Your Dad was mean for doing that!! I would have been so angry! D:

You had so many more games than I did. I've still got my N64 (Jungle Green, from the DK64 Bundle!!!) and most of my games, but I only ever had 15-20. Your empire is amazing!

I also had this controller, and it's one of my favorites EVER. It's affordable used, if you'd like some extra shiny to go along with your N64.

I think this is a great decision! What games will you get first?? :)

best result i got so far were kitsh-bent replacement bowls and gears. some of the pieces requires a bit of sanding, but an OG joystick with lubricated kitsch bent parts is the best you can get nowadays. cost about 5$CAD for a kit, and requires 30min of work to install.

Second best were optical style joysticks on amazon.

I used to use this Mad Catz wheel:

http://www.amazon.com/Analog-Steering-Wheel-Nintendo-64-Pedals/dp/B00001WRHW

I got it when I was a child to use with san fransisco rush, to emulate the arcade experience.

It's pretty good, but it only has roughly a 180 degree turn radius, which means 90 to the left equals pushing your joystick all the way to the left, so it is generally difficult to use. Any N64-era wheel is going to operate this way. Also, the suction cups on the bottom aren't enough to keep it stuck to a table for very long, so you'll probably want to figure some way to mount it to a heavier board.

The pedals can be made to either represent the A and B buttons, or it can be made to represent the y-axis on the joystick, so as long as the game supports analog accelleration and breaking, then so can your pedals.

In short bursts it is really fun to use.

Amazon has some used ones for like 15 bucks, so everyone who is saying "don't get a racing wheel" is just being obnoxious.

If you're an N64 collector, you should have all the peripherals, and this is an affordable, fun, decent controller, and at $15 bucks it's a no-brainer.

u/That_Batman · 2 pointsr/gaming

Interestingly enough, I bought one of these for myself in the N64 days.

It obviously didn't work as well as the Wii with the games designed for tilt support, but this did add an interesting twist on playing Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I enjoyed it while the 64 was relevant.

u/dwhweb · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

One thing to also look out for is the controller - unfortunately it's just down to the way they're designed that the sticks wear and get slack over time, so second hand pads can vary. You might be as well going for a new third party pad as well - I have the USB version of this pad and can attest that it's quite good. The market is flooded with cheap rubbish pads, so watch out for that.

With regards to games, Mario 64, Mario Kart and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time are probably considered essential on the platform. You mentioned Goldeneye - the spiritual successor to that is Perfect dark, and one of my personal favourites.

HTH :)

u/640212804843 · -6 pointsr/gaming

Untrue by simply looking at it.

In reality the only successful madcatz perpherial was the madcatz analog steering wheel for the n64. It's the only time their prepherial was the best of the best. You basically had a cruisin usa cabinet at home.

u/Sirotaca · 7 pointsr/Gamecube

Hold on, what? Are you trying to plug a PlayStation cable into a GameCube? Of course that doesn't work. I'm actually amazed it even fits.

You need a Nintendo composite video cable like this one or an S-Video cable like this one. Go with the latter if your TV has an S-Video input.

u/Zokusho · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Or get one of these motherfuckers. A lot of old controllers have really short cables. The original Xbox controller (well, the S controller. I can't speak about the Duke) was the first one I remember that had a cable long enough to reach our couch without having to pull the console out as far from the TV as it could go. When I was still in college, my dad moved to a new house and I had to use two god damned Gamecube extension cables to reach his couch when I decided to play The Wind Waker again.

Hurray for wireless controllers!

u/P1kas · 1 pointr/SSBM

No. Depending on the console you're using, you need either

or

https://www.amazon.com/Cinpel-S-Video-Cable-Nintendo-64-GameCube/dp/B00KZLEHL2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1483341056&sr=8-3&keywords=s-video+cable+gamecube

Plus one audio splitter cable, like this one

https://www.amazon.com/CableWholesales-Audio-Piggyback-Cable-Female/dp/B000I94FAE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483343243&sr=8-2&keywords=piggyback+cable+rca+audio

Basically, these console cables have two video outputs. You plug the Composite end into your TV, and the S-Video end into your capture card. Then you use the audio splitter cables to have audio on both your card and your tv. It's pretty easy to set up on any CRT using composite

u/deadbeareyes · 1 pointr/n64

Like this?

Edit: Or like this one? They might be the same, I know very little about things like this.

u/zN8 · 1 pointr/n64

You're right thanks. I contacted the seller and they said mentioned memory card. Maybe they save via memory card and I have a memory that doesn't work with it? this is the memory card I use

u/helpful_hank · 3 pointsr/todayilearned

Use nothing but these guys. Joystick ALWAYS outperformed the original N64 contollers and never lost speed.

u/AlaskanBullWorms · 1 pointr/gamecollecting

I found an N64 V3 racing wheel in box at a S.A. about six months ago. It was only five bucks and the best thing I've ever gotten from a thrift store.

u/TheCopernicus · 1 pointr/GameSale

Unless you really want a genuine one, you can find them on Amazon really cheap like this.

u/whenweusedtoplay · 1 pointr/retrogaming

Buy N64 and buy this : https://www.amazon.com/OSTENT-Cartridge-Adapter-Compatible-Nintendo-64/dp/B07D3SBHL4/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=ED64&qid=1558581252&s=gateway&sr=8-1

You wont regret it .
Oh yeah and replace the original Joystick if it's to worn out.

We always joked about getting this for my brother when I was little.

u/DejoMasters · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

Okay now I getcha. I was under the impression you had a N64 composite cable. This is how I'm connected up to my TV now, so I would give that a try. Too many adapters will result in signal degradation. Even if the TV you're hooking up to does not have composite video ports, you're cutting down on the number of adapters you need and the signal will be better to begin with.

u/dokmar · 2 pointsr/gaming

I got my first video game boner when I got this http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Tilt-Rumble-Motion-Sensing/dp/B000JQJMZO

I'll be trying those at some point with I have cash to burn, avoid the Gamecube styled ones. I've had better luck playing Goldeneye with my makopad ffs.

That’s the cable that is the proprietary Nintendo A/V cable:

Amazon seems to have this and this available. I believe the Gamecube ones work on N64, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Sorry, I might have said something wrong. I meant the AV Composite Cables.

This cable:

My SNES is SNS-001.

What the hell are you talking about? The cables are less than 5 bucks.
