I think the shuffle would be pretty much ideal. It's very easy to use without looking. plus voiceover of track and artist names would be helpful to her.

You could attach it to a bluetooth transmitter like this one and pair it to a set of bluetooth speakers. Then she could sit with the shuffle anywhere.

The only problem is as you pointed out it's kinda small. I'd think the classic iPod clickwheel would be pretty easy to master for a sightless person (I can use mine in the dark just from years of experience). It's a bigger control, it might be just right. You could get a 30-pin transmitter and do the same thing.

One thing to consider is Bluetooth devices sometimes un-pair, and you'd have to explain how to deal with that- and probably expect a follow-up call until she's memorized it. As long as you just press a single button to pair (many speakers are like that), it should be a simple procedure for her, though.
