It's not a bad thing. But it can be stressful for all the parties depending on how you do it. For horses(I live on a horse farm), it involves physically separating mom and foal, and that stresses them both out. If there are other animals around, the crying/yelling back and forth can stress them out. We had one foal that developed a "pacing in a circle" habit in the stall during weaning that never really stopped while we had him.
We ensure the animals aren't weaned "too soon" by setting up feed tubs that only smaller horses can eat out of (almost like the opposite of the device on this page), so they can fully graze and eat solid food by the time we wean them, but they still don't like the idea of being away from mom.
