It's a snap off knife, it's intended to break! The nice thing about those things is that the blade is very sharp, and maintenance is breaking off the end at pre-defined points. I don't plan on cutting much beyond string and splinters, and there's no need for a... large swiss army size blade.

The food bit is still being researched. My current cut-off is no more than $2 per lb and no less than 100 calories per 1.5 oz. The starches(tortilla, oatmeal, soon to be added angel hair) are mostly to hold the super high calorie stuff(peanut butter, brownie mix, olive oil). I'm always looking for suggestions on that front because unlike gear I can change it every resupply. That also likely isn't 4 days worth of food, I need to count the calories.

I'm worried about the pack to be honest, but that's why I brought duct tape. Some reviews say it tears, others say it doesn't, but I figured it has free returns so I might as well use it on my test run. This is the other pack I was looking at. Nothing but positive reviews there, but the free returns really sold me on the cheap one for my test run.
