You can't turn one down without turning down the rest of the chain. At least, not without some likely menu-diving. You also have to try to manage all that gain-staging, creatively. You might be reducing your dynamic range, compositionally, for the sake of dancing the line between too quiet and clipping. There's just no beating a mixer, when it comes to, well, mixing.

I highly recommend getting a mixer. They have some reasonable portable ones now- the rolls and nady mixers come to mind. More featured ones have recorders built in, which could be helpful. Consider the Zoom R16 for this, as it gets plenty love. 8 inputs at a time. If you don't mind being plugged in, nab yourself a cheap behringer mixer used and keep it pushin. I'll link u in a sec, I'm at work lol.

edit: yeah, highly recommend a mixer, but you'll be find daisy-chaining while you research and save up. just be mindful of your needs and how you'll need to route your audio so you're minimizing compromise.

I like this topic. Hypothetically spending money is fun! I will give a few options since I'm sure you're not gonna like some of them. I am not sure where the giftcard is too, but eh whatever.

  • $49.99 Mic Arm Mount - Link

Although having my mic sit on the desk is fine, I do have to move it to sit in front of me every time I stream and it gets in the way of my keyboard. I'm sure if picks up noise every time I bump the desk, pick up my drink, etc too. Also, the cable is strung through the arm, so less tangled stuff!

  • $29.99 - Audio Mixer - Link

Who doesn't need a good audio mixer? Sure, you can tune the audio balance for your viewers super easy, but you want to jam to some tunes with them barely hearing them? Mix it up! Although the one I linked is pretty cheap, I saved the rest of the $50 for adapters and the like to get this working for headphones and such. This is all mostly a function of the budget. I would personally recommend the Astro Mixamp for any console gamers, but they are more pricey. There are a lot of options out there, so do your research.

  • LIGHTS!

OMG seriously though. You'd be amazed at how good you can look with proper lighting. Any lights themselves can work, and usually multiple sources/locations. Diffused light using soft boxes (fabric cover) can reduce shadows and harsh edges. This leads my to my next thing....

  • Green Screen

Do you want to be IN THE GAME? Use a green screen to make that ugly, dirty, messy, bedroom, apartment (bathroom? I don't judge), disappear! Using chroma-key to remove the green curtain background allows you to immerse your sexy body into the game and allow more space for people to see the game. Good lighting definitely helps with this. Again, I won't recommend anything because most green sheets work and you can build your own stand/setup. There are some creative ideas out there for making cheap green screen too. Check out this thread for a discussion about green screens!

That's about all I can think of now, but would love to hear others ideas too!

Edit: As I was writing this, everyone seemed to be stealing my ideas and posting first. GET YOUR OWN

ok, your desktop PC should have a blue plug at the back:

http://i.imgur.com/sXF0D.png

plug the console into this port with the adapter.

now, connect the speakers to the green as usual.

go into your sound properties on your computer:

for windows 7 it would be control panel -> sounds -> manage audio devices

click on recording and you should see the line in option. turn on listen to this device. now, when you do that, you can see it pop up in the volume control. open volume control in the bottom right near the clock and click mixer. you can control how loud the console is in comparison to the PC sounds.

if you dont want to do all of this PC fiddling, you need to get a mixer:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009XH4HU/

which does the same thing, but has more inputs and does not rely on the PC.
if you want more inputs for your pc, you need to get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KW2YEI/

which will add one more stereo input.

Nady makes a cheap, battery (9V) powered mixer. It's 8-channel in mono or 4-channel in stereo.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XH4HU I use this mixer with up to 8 POs in mono or 4 in stereo. It's cheap, battery powered (one 9 volt), and sounds decent enough for POs which are kind of lofi to begin with. For sending sync to all the POs I use the korg synckontrol iOS app (no android version unfortunately) hooked up to a series of headphone splitters.

Here's one that I've been using for the last three years for a similar purpose, but it doesn't come with a power adapter so you need to also buy a universal power adapter to go with it.

It also has a few slight downsides that might bug you. First, you get independent volume knobs for each channel, so you have two volumes to change to adjust one stereo source, not one. Second, it uses 1/4" jacks, so you need adapters to plug in your electronics. Third, at least on mine the internal jacks didn't meet up perfectly with the 1/4" plugs when they were plugged all the way in. The weight of the wire would pull the tip of the plug away from the contact in the socket. I fixed that by putting the plug through a washer or piece of cardboard that stopped the plug from going in all the way. Has worked great ever since.

If I had a link to another similar mixer at similar price on hand I would recommend that instead. On the plus side, the Nady is built to be user-serviceable. There are probably better options that might be cheaper once you factor in the cost of power adapter. I spent a bunch of time shopping last time I needed one and found it surprisingly hard to get a simple, cheap, stereo, line-level mixer. Everything's either DJ equipment, made for microphones and not line level, or a huge crazy $400 mixer board with tons of channels like you would use for recording a band.

I'll look around a little bit longer, but here's what you're looking for in a mixer case I come up dry:

  1. Has actual gain knobs, not just volume or level knobs. Note the bad Amazon reviews on this one, that it cuts the output volume too much. That's because the volume knobs only from zero to slightly-less-than-100%. Gain knobs go above 100%.
  2. Is not a DJ-style "crossfade" mixer like this one. Note the slider on the panel... That means it's set up to crossfade between two different things, so when it's in the middle both things will be at half volume.
  3. Is built for line level (keyboards, CD players etc.), not microphones or guitars. If it's 1/4" jacks or RCA jacks it's probably fine. If it has XLR jacks you probably won't be able to use those inputs. (But you can just turn them to zero volume and ignore them.)
  4. (EDIT) Doesn't collapse channels to mono, like this asshole device does. (I thought it was a good alternative to the NADY, until I read the fine print.)

I'm assuming this is Windows yes?

When you launch Serato it puts your DJ controller into professional audio mode called ASIO. Once a soundcard is in ASIO mode it can't be accessed by more than one program so that is why you aren't getting 'other' sound when Serato is running.

Your laptop probably switches the standard Windows audio/youtube/soundcloud to using your internal soundcard but maybe your internal soundcard is turned down? Or you don't have one? I'm not sure. Typically what would happen is the rest of your audio will come out your laptop soundcard/laptop speakers once you switch your controller into ASIO mode.

What I did was I bought a mini mixer and I have my DJ controller, laptop Audio, and a chromecast connected to the mini mixer which then outputs to my speakers. That way I can have all 3 sources going at the same time if I wish.

This is the one I got: https://smile.amazon.com/Nady-MM-242-Stereo-Channel-outputs/dp/B0009XH4HU/

Note: you have to buy a separate power supply here: https://smile.amazon.com/Nady-PAD-1-External-Electronic-Keyboards/dp/B006SOKW32/

You'll also need the proper TRS cables as this is balanced TRS only.

get a cheap 3s lipo battery for an R/C car/pane to run this:

https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-Micromix-MX400-Low-Noise-4-Channel/dp/B000KGYAYQ/

edit:

for a few bucks more this one runs off a 9v battery and has more channels

https://www.amazon.com/Nady-MM-242-Stereo-Channel-outputs/dp/B0009XH4HU/

in the frequently bought together section you'll find the stereo splitter 1/8" stereo to 1/4" mono.

You would need a real mixer like this and a few cables and adapters : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009XH4HU
Some other Xbox users recommended using the Xbox one skype app.

u/TTRSkidlz · 1 pointr/synthesizers

It's plugged into a Nady MM-242 mixer. It's an ok little mixer that I usually use as a sub-sub-mixer to combine fx returns.

u/jamvanderloeff · 1 pointr/buildapc

It's called a mixer. This one looks decent for cheap, but you'd need to also get a few 3.5mm to 1/4" breakout cables https://www.amazon.com/Nady-MM-242-Stereo-Channel-outputs/dp/B0009XH4HU/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1494284991&sr=8-31&keywords=stereo+4+channel+mixer

u/JamesR · 1 pointr/audio

It sounds like you're trying to mix two audio sources into one. To do this you need an audio mixer.

Sorry, I don't know how to make things work with the equipment you bought... connect to computer via usb and to PS4 via s/pdif I'd guess, but you probably tried that already.

u/uzimonkey · 1 pointr/techsupport

I found that one but it's mono. That's the problem with almost all of the mixers is that they're made for microphones and guitars and stuff, not computers. In the same vein I've found this, but it's very cheap and 10% 1 star reviews most of them complaining it was defective. There's almost nothing I can find between the tiny mono mixers (generally made to connect several microphones to a single amp I guess) this thing and $150+ mixers with 8+ channels and 700 knobs.

u/OldSkooRebel · 1 pointr/audiophile

No problem, I probably could have been clearer in my post. I found this relatively cheap mixer and your opinion on it (or anyone else's opinion) would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the help
