I think you know what brand this sub loves... But not without reason! In that range you really have to look at Seiko. There are a few watches you could buy, the Sarb033 is at the top of the spectrum. However I personally own and love it and It's a beautiful watch with good bang per buck, you do get something for your money! If your dad is into divers there are a few options as well. Either the turtle or the diver icon of Seiko, the SKX. Both really good watches as well. I hope I could help you and your dad.
I am glad to know I am not the only one who doesn't like the lugs or case shape. Apparently Amazon thinks those lugs are so big that I need "expert wall mounting". backup link for when Amazon fixes that -- http://imgur.com/v9hQmET
Does it have to be an automatic? Both the Citizen Nighthawk (Eco-drive) and the Seiko Flightmaster (quartz) are in a similar aesthetic, have great quality for its price, and is well within your budget.
I'd suggest taking a look at seiko/orient automatics on amazon, and seeing if one fits the aesthetic.
For my personal recommendation, something like the Laco Pilot or a Seiko Turtle (with a different strap) for watches that might suit his style.
+1 for Seiko Divers (any of them really).
Also check out Orient
All of these are waterproof to 200m (a lot of people suggest this as the minimum if you expect a watch to get wet), in or below your price range, and respected for their quality compared to others in this price range. These are all also available in other colors. Another thing to note is that you can change bracelets/straps aftermarket so don't let that be a deciding factor.
Sure, here is a link to all of the sellers. Looks like the 777 is more expensive than the PADI, which is the turtle I just bought, but only by about $30 or so.

No trying to argue, but you over payed compared to competitors listings. Furthermore, once you buy something it is no longer considered "new", whether its been used or not.

Love the Seiko Turtle for under $300
