I'm working on a Guide for New Vapers with an emphasis on switching from throwaways. This is a draft.
----------

If you feel you need a "cigarette" flavor as a life-preserver, go for it. But try another flavor juice as well. My concern is the lousy taste will convince you vaping is not your thing. I bet you'll be off the "cigarette" flavor quickly.

If you're a Redditor, visit /r/Electronic_Cigarette. Have a look at the Starter Guide in the sidebar, and feel free to ask any questions there (use the "New to Vaping? Ask a Question" link on the sidebar to have it tagged properly). Oh, and you might want to check out /r/vaping101, as well.
Because so many people ask, this is a good starter kit:

  • eGo Twist (~$20)
  • eGo Charger (~$3)
  • iClear 16, Kanger EVOD or Vivi Nova Mini tank (~$7)
  • 12 or 18mg nicotine juice (a decent starting place to discover your needed level)

You can buy in pieces, or get a kit. If you buy from a good dealer, kits can save you a few dollars, but beware there are unscrupulous dealers everywhere trying to make a quick buck off the unsuspecting. Don't buy from flea markets, festivals or especially mall vendors. Get prices and then check online before buying. And it's never a bad idea to foster a relationship with a local Brick & Mortar store if you live near a good one.

There are dozens and dozens of places to buy online, but these are known to be reputable and trusted online vendors:

  • madvapes.com
  • discountvapers.com
  • vapingme.com
  • Great deals can be found at fasttech.com, but I don't recommend it to new vapers)

Moving on from a Basic Setup

At some point, vapers who stick with it decide to "graduate" from their entry-level system. There are lots of choices, but I'm going to outline a couple reasonably priced VV/VW Mod systems.

But first, what do those things mean?

VV = Variable Voltage. VW = Variable Wattage. It really just means you can adjust the amount of power the battery sends to the heating element in the juice tank. "Mod" means "Modifiable" system. My understanding is the name came from the early days of vaping, vapers built their own devices, or later did a lot of tinkering to get the performance they wanted. Today, VV/VW Mods are pretty much ready-to-go out of the box, but the name stuck. A lot of folks just call them Personal Vaporizers (PVs), as well.

The benefit of a VV/VW Mod is you can dial in exactly how you want your system to deliver vapor. More power usually means more vapor and/or more "throat hit." Less power means longer battery life, and in many cases, better tasting vapor. VV/VW systems contain a computer chip to deliver consistent power until the battery is drained. The converse of a VV/VW Mod is a Mechanical Mod (or Mech Mod). These PVs don't contain any chips or wires. They basically hold a battery and deliver as much raw wattage as possible. The downside is that output slowly decreases as the battery dies. For advanced vapers there are many benefits to a Mech Mod, which I won't go into now. The point being, for a novice vaper looking to move up, a VV/VW Mod is probably the way to go.

Here's an idea for a system that's a step up from the eGo:

  • This is the Innokin SVD VV (Variable Voltage) mod has a good reputation in the community, and this is a really good price.

  • Another popular VV Mod at a good price. A lot of people use this one.

  • Here’s the tank I prefer. This is a great price:

If they’re sold out, you can get them cheap at fasttech.com, but they take 10 days to ship usually. I wouldn’t pay more than $12 for one. There are many, many tank choices out there, but this is the simplest one I’ve found yet, with good performance and few leakage issues, but it’s not the only option. I’ve gone through 7 different tank designs in 2 months. It’s a moving target. There’s a lot going on in tank design.

You’ll need extra heads for whatever tank you get (I buy mine from discountvapers.com), but you can get them at fasttech, too. For a VV device, get 2.2, 2.4 or 2.5 ohm coil heads.

  • You’ll also need two batteries and a charger. Stick with a high-quality Panasonic or AW battery, as the cheap ones can explode. I buy mine at the B&M in case they go bad or explodey I can exchange them. You can use 18350, 18490 or 18650s in a SVD or Vamo, but you’ll probably want the larger 18650. These are good.

    http://www.discountvapers.com/efest-imr-2000mah-3-7v-18650-battery/

You’ll be able to go most of a day with one battery, depending on your usage level. I always bring an extra battery or extra device with me. You don't want to be caught without power.

  • As for the charger, get a Nitecore. You can get them anywhere for under $25. Avoid the cheaper Trustfire brand.

The i4 (same as the i2 linked above but with 4 bays instead of 2) is $17.50 (free shipping if you have prime) I think the $5 is worth it to double your charging capacity.
