The L-Prize winning bulb At this point I think this is the most BIFL you can get on a LED. Basically this bulb was the best survivor of a massive stress test done by the U.S. DoE. At $30 a bulb, the price isn't that far out there either.
This is the new one on Amazon. Not in stock but still ~$50
Amazon has it for $50
Almost all lightbulbs put lumen rating on the packaging. There is a chart on wikipedia, but I would assume it is an estimate. Numbers seem in the ballpark anyway.
So, a 75w Incandescent is somewhere around 1200 lumens. Not sure what they run price wise (I haven't bought one in years), but they are usually the least expensive to buy.
A 20w CFL is delivering around 1200 lumens. The one I linked to is $5 a piece, feel free to shop around and find a better price/manufacturer.
At 10w, Phillips L-Prize wining LED bulb gives 920 lumens, which is about the best I've heard of. Search around and you may find it cheaper, but amazon has it at $50.
As of right now, I would just get CFL, at least until the price of LEDs start coming down.
Its CRI is 92. Source
Recessed Lighting: they make replacement kits that fit inside the can of recessed lighting fixtures. Something like THIS. We installed a bunch in our basement to replace some really old incandescent fixtures that had CFL bulbs in them. Added dimmers at the same time so you get a nice range of lighting.
For some existing fixtures, we've put in the Phillips A-19 bulb as an experiment. They've worked out well so far over the past 3 months.
