Description of Problem: A small selection of games, the only common feature seeming to be that they're mostly 2D (Don't Starve, Don't Starve Together, Game Dev Tycoon) run like absolute misery. Just the menus of these games run at very low framerates, I don't know the exact number because it's not very relevant as i'll get into later. Games like Overwatch, Bioshock Remastered, and Skyrim all run smooth and like a dream, framerates well above 60fps. This issue however only happens when displaying to an external monitor!

Troubleshooting:

So, to establish some basic facts:

  1. The issue with these games happens regardless of which GPU is being used (1070 or HD 530)
  2. The issue occurs regardless of cable used or cable type (Multiple HDMIs, Multiple Displayports have been tested)
  3. The issue occurs regardless of display used (Tested on TV, as well as my LG Ultrawide)
  4. The drivers for the 1070 have been reinstalled recently, the issue predated doing this and is still here afterwards
  5. As a reminder, this isuse only effects those games. A game like Overwatch is a constant 60fps on the highest settings at 1920x1080
  6. The lag is the same regardless of the resolution the game is set to. 640x480 Don't Starve has crazy slow menus as well as Game Dev Tycoon, but OW on Ultra at 1920x1080 is like butter
  7. Nvidia control panel is set to "Always Use High-Performance GPU". Laptop is set to "High Performance" mode in the battery settings.
  8. I have the same issue even when the GTX 1070 is not connected, and the laptops internal 970m is in use instead. As a reminder, the correct driver is installed for 1070.
  9. I am having no issues with CPU thermals. I am having no throttling. Same with the GPU. Tempatures are fine (reminder, OW runs at max settings 1920x1080 and does not suffer frame drops)

That's all I have to say for now. I'm sorry if I've neglected something important but I'm at my wits end. I don't know what the issue is and I don't understand why my laptop's internal screen runs these games just fine, but when using an external one it doesn't. I'm sorry if I've stated obvious things or repeated myself, but all the basic troubleshooting people have suggested before has been tried and a lot of the basics just wouldn't make sense.

(People try to say that maybe the external monitor is higher rez-- the resolution the game is running at is irrelevant, and I've tried it on a 1080p monitor as well. Even 640x480 is giving serious lag at the MENU. People try to say that it might be that the GPU isn't strong enough, but it is. It runs OW perfectly. People try to say that I might be having throttling issues-- I've very used to those issues and treating them, it is not throttling. And if it were throttling, I'd have that issue in OW surely)

If someone can find me a solution to this I will give you reddit gold. I've never had an issue that I either couldn't resolve or find the root cause of and this is driving me absolutely insane.
