Piggy-backing with suggestions.

Whites - look for moscatos and sweet rieslings. They're excellent "starter wines" with a sweeter taste. Seriously, a $6 bottle of Barefoot Moscato will do, and that way you're not out too much money if you don't like the taste. Serving them chilled also helps out with taste.

For red wines, I recommend pouring with a wine aerator to help with the taste. Pinot noirs or red blends might be less intense for you. And feel free to add fruit to help lighten the flavor (I mean, that's what sangria's all about). Throw in a couple of blackberries or orange and lime slices, whatever you want.
