I completely disagree. Going from a Blackshark to a Tiamat had a night and day difference for positional audio in games like Battlefield and Insurgency. The Tiamat even has a button that lets you switch from 7.1 to stereo audio on the fly, and I have compared the difference. I can hear exactly where enemies are, and even how far away they are. The only exception is that it doesn't translate well vertically, so if someone is running around one floor up above or below you, it sounds like they're on the same floor as you which can be disorienting.
Granted, I did have to get a 7.1 capable sound card in order to be able to tell the difference. Also, from what I can tell, 5.1 surround audio is pretty much just as good, but I don't really see many headsets that support it. It's usually just stereo or 7.1
are you able to combine the headset and the mic?
