Warning! Personal opinion ahead:

The 569's are actually on display at the Chicago Microcenter (on Elston) and I went to try them out a couple months ago. I wasn't too impressed with them sadly.

  • What I like: The comfort is good actually, as well as the build quality. While it is plastic, it's surprisingly durable. Very similar build and material that my aging HD 518 uses (And I've beat those things up a little, had to change the pads recently). Although with them being on display, the pads and clamp are a bit worn in. Sennheiser's are known for a heavier clamp, if you are ok with that. And despite having a 2.5mm connector for the headphones themselves, having a removable cable is a welcome feature and you can mod them to make it 3.5mm on both ends.

  • What I didnt like: The sound... this is where my disappointment lies. Now I will admit, I was testing them with my phone (Galaxy S9, 320kb MP3's), but I sadly don't have a portable amp. The Bass seemed accurate, but it sounded anemic, very little thump. The mids are... ok. Guitars and vocals are present, but don't have much life to them. And the treble while there, was definitely reduced/rolled off. (This doesn't bother me much since I'm a bit more sensitive to treble. The SHP9500's I got recently actually gave me a slight headache first time I listened to music on them, but I'm adjusting to it.) Soundstage also seemed a bit narrow to me. The ATH M40X's (I think? Might have been the 50's.) that where also on display I thought sounded better, even though the pads where not comfortable.

    *

TLDR: Simply put, they are not a bad choice, but I think there are better options available at this price. I think my old Sennheiser 518's (Open) and my much newer MH752's (closed) sound better than the 569's.

Now while I haven't had the chance to listen to the HD 559's... Those I have heard actually are comfier, and sound better overall than the 569, even though they are an open set of cans (more bass too!?). They are also on sale, for $87.85 on Amazon. I would like a replacement for my 518's since the left side of the headband has a crack in it, so I'm keeping them on my radar. Anybody here have a pair of the 559's?

  • Edited to add info and reword stuff.
u/msuts · 3 pointsr/buildapc

My philosophy is to find the best price-to-performance ratio.

$20 and under: Monoprice 8283 DJ Headphones (closed-back, about the cheapest I would recommend)

$50 and under: Superlux HD 681 EVO (semi-open back, great value, a sweet spot for budget headphones)

$75 and under: Audio-Technica ATH-AD500X (excellent soundstage)

$100 and under: Sennheiser HD 559 (classic laid-back Sennheiser sound, good soundstage, great all-rounder)

$125 and under: [Sennheiser HD 579] (https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-579-Open-Headphone-x/dp/B01L1IIF1K) (slightly improved 559, you may not notice a difference)

$150 and under: [Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-hd-58x-jubilee-headphones) (excellent all-rounder, a noticeable upgrade from the 559/579, another sweet spot for price-performance ratio)

$175 and under: [HIFIMAN HE4XX] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-he4xx-planar-magnetic-headphones) (planar magnetics - a much different sound signature with more bass impact)

$200 and under: [Sennheiser HD 6XX] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx) (pretty much the best 99% of people will ever hear or want or need)

After the HD 6XX, you really start to experience diminishing returns IMO. In my experience, all the pairs I listed are very comfortable, especially the midrange Sennheisers.

u/olbaze · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Mine are an old pair of Sennheiser HD555. The current iteration of those would be the HD 559.

u/FatS4cks · 2 pointsr/headphones

If you get open back headphones you should hear pretty much everything outside your headphones- pads matter a little bit for sound isolation, but not a whole bunch when you have open headphones.

I don't know your price range, but under $100 you can get some pretty good options for gaming. All of these recommendations don't have emphasized bass which should help with details like footsteps. Out of all these I prefer the Philips shp9500 because they're the cheapest and you can get a headset mic for them

SHP 9500 they're cheaper on newegg

u/QuipA · 2 pointsr/headphones

If you are not going to use this headphone outside an open back model will give you a better experience.

I would recommend you check out the Sennheiser HD559 and skip the amp.

u/jimmysaint13 · 2 pointsr/iRacing

I would really suggest a good pair of open-back, full-cover headphones. Never mind surround, as one person said above, most 'surround' headphones really only try to simulate what a good pair of open-back stereo headphones can do.

I use a pair of Sennheiser HD 518 headphones, which aren't being made any more, but the successor to them is the HD 559, which you can see here.

They're not cheap, but they sound incredibly good for gaming, music, whatever and they're very, very comfortable to wear.

High-end open-back headphones are going to be your best bet. Not just my Sennheisers, but any headphones of comparable quality. They reach a level of comfort and audio quality that no earbud can hope to match. Really the only thing earbuds are good for are their portability.

u/TriflingGnome · 2 pointsr/wow

Better yet, buy some open-back headphones! Best of both worlds

u/namarax · 2 pointsr/offlineTV

i believe he has the HD 598 SE which are discontinued now and have been replaced by new series of headphones.

here's one of them, the HD 559 https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-559-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IIEKM/

there's also the HD 579 and HD 599 if you would like to do research, i don't know what's the difference

u/seputaes_r · 2 pointsr/Twitch

Are you looking specifically for gaming headphones? Normally those will include features like surround sound, etc. Or are you looking for something more generic that produces great sound everywhere (but not necessarily the best for gaming)? (Personally I feel these features are a bit of a gimmick and overall sound quality is much more desirable)

If the later, in that price range I'm a huge fan of Sennheiser's HD line, specifically the HD 559 or HD579. Both of these are open-back, so they're not sound isolating at all and produce a very crisp airy sound. The entire line is insanely comfortable and great for wearing for extended periods. I use a pair at work for 7+ hours, and then come home and use them again for another 4+ hours every day.

They do also offer a "gaming" headset w/ mic with surround sound but the same comfort style: PC 373D. I've used this in the past and can highly recommend it, but it's a bit out of your price range, but something to keep in mind. The 559 and 579 will basically give you the same sound quality but without the mic/surround.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01L1IIEKM/

$70 used. Which is what I would expect. It's overpriced new and if you can find a cheaper 518/558/598 then get it.

The only difference seems to be the 559 and above have slightly bass subbass extension than the 518/558/598 series.

u/Jonners_90 · 1 pointr/Gaming_Headsets

Since you don't need a mic, you may be better off with a pair of regular stereo headphones. Audiotechnica M40x (closed) and Sennheiser HD 559 (open) are both great choices in your budget. Just note that the 559s come with the 6.3mm jack plug so you'll need an adapter.

those are good sounding, highly comfy cans, for 129 USD. Also, sennheiser products last a lifetime (and they produce some of the best cans known to man).

I ordered the hd 559 from amazon as they're on sale. But I'm pretty sure they don't come with the 3.5mm adapter. Is it safe for me to just buy a standar 3.5mm cable to use for the headphones, or should I buy the adapter?

u/Mad_Economist · 1 pointr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Sorry for the delayed response, some stuff cropped up for me yesterday, so this is the first I've been on Reddit.

I'll admit, I really have no frame of reference for what sort of audio setup you're looking to get here, in mind of the scope of your budget for the build. You can get [a decent pair of headphones for $100] (https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-559-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IIEKM), although there are meaningful improvements [at a higher price] (https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx) depending on your priorities. A microphone could be anything from [a generic microphone on a cable] (https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Compatible-QuietComfort-Sennheiser-Headphone/dp/B01NAQWCGS) (note that due to Sennheiser's brilliant proprietary locking mechanism, this only works with the first headphone linked, the 559, and others in its series), to a [fancier clip-on] (https://antlionaudio.com/products/modmic-usb), to a [decent condenser and a little audio interface, which would also give you something to plug your headphones into] (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT2020-ScrSl--focusrite-scarlett-solo-audio-interface-and-at2020-recording-package?&mrkgcl=28&mrkgadid=3341929001&product_id=AT2020-ScrSl&campaigntype=shopping&campaign=aaShopping%2520-%2520Core%2520-%2520Studio%2520%26%2520Recording%2520-%2520No%2520Token&adgroup=Studio%2520%26%2520Recording%2520-%2520Audio%2520Interfaces&placement=google&creative=353504443384&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKCAiA8K7uBRBBEiwACOm4d3qE0PN-3X8mLcnWDImU-a-ej6vw_0fITqAXVNnMvdNb9wTsSwS9fhoCQiMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). And for cheap speakers, that could be anything from [a decent low-ish-end $100~ audiophile targeted pair] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC) to [about three times as much for an mid-end speaker standard] (https://www.amazon.com/Kali-Audio-LP-6-Studio-Monitor/dp/B07NWBSJ11), or a pair of [$20 pods] (https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Labs-Pebble-Black-Loudspeaker/dp/B0791H74NT/).

So uh...pretty much it'd be good to have a guideline for how much money you'd like to allocate, unless you'd like to pull from the examples given above - which should fit the bill, other than the condenser and "integrated" mic, but there are extremely limited options for mics on headsets that are better than stuff like the Modmic, so I didn't really want to get into that quagmire unless you particularly need broadcast mic quality on a headset.

In the case of peripherals i would strongly recommend investing a good amount on them. They re gonna be with you a long time after all.

For monitors its a bit expensive but this is la creme de la creme while still being reasonable, gonna need a big desk tho https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bMKcCJ/msi-optix-ag32cq-315-2560x1440-144hz-monitor-optix-ag32cq

Windows you may ask? I dont want to pay them 110 dollars for a license, well the gray market on ebay/amazon has deals on keys for 10 or 5 bucks. How can they get so cheap? Well oem manufacturers buy them in bulk, that way you can make a 300 dollar pc with win 10 and still make profit.

Alternatively this has worked for me in the past. You dont even need to install a thing on your pc https://msguides.com/microsoft-software-products/2-ways-activate-windows-10-free-without-software.html

To install it downoald it with the media creation tool from microsoft into an empty usb then boot to it with the new pc.

Get a good solid regular headphone without an attached mic, plus the blue yeti nano. I went ahead and checked to see if you could plug earbuds or headphones into it and the answer is yes you can. There is an audio Jack on the bottom of the mic.

As for feeling claustrophobic when wearing headphones, have you tried wearing open back headphones? They let the sound travel outward a little (nowhere near as loudly as speakers so your mic wont pick up the sound unless you are BLASTING your game sounds).

There are quite a few options for headphones that are open back and cheap. The reason they are called open back headphones is because the earcups are not closed off to keep the sound just in your ears. And you might ask me "what's the point of wearing headphones if the sound is allowed to leak out?" And the reasons are: comfort, sound quality, and temperature control. They are lightweight which makes them easier to wear, they dont give you that closed in feeling, and they let your ears breathe and prevent sweating.

Some good cheap options are the Phillip's shp9500
Philips SHP9500 HiFi Precision Stereo Over-ear Headphones (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ENMK1DW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7G64Cb4F3GYG8

Or the sennheiser HD 559
Sennheiser HD 559 Open Back Headphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L1IIEKM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nI64Cb5G6KGKS

Or the Audio-technica AD700x
Audio-Technica ATHAD700X Audiophile Open Air Dynamic Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iJ64CbA4ZQ3F1

All of these would be great, but something to keep in mind is these headphones wont have quite as much bass as a closed back headphone. It's still there, just not as much. So if you listen to very bass heavy music, you might wanna swap to your speakers for that.

Open ear headphones with a very neutral sound - 100% check out the Sennheiser 558 and 598's. Great build quality, the sound is amazingly flat (great for studio headphone use, gives almost a true-to-source sound), and are comfortable enough for someone that doesn't have a large head to wear for hours.

I've had my 558's for about 2 years now, and do not regret the purchase one bit. The updated model, the 559's can be had for ~$100 USD. The 598 SR's can be had for about $140.

Both models come with a detachable/upgradable cable as well.

u/notmyrealusername666 · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

So they are 83$, so really good, but they're 50 ohms, will that be an issue without an amp? And then do I need an adaptor to plug it in my computer if so which one?

(Sorry about all the questions, I don't know anything about the subject and I'd like to make the best choice possible.)

/r/zeos has a headphone guide. I'd say one of these would be good assuming you want open back: (in no particular order)

  • Superlux HD 681 needs hm5 velour pad swap

  • Sennheiser HD 559 I don't remember how Zeos said these sound so one of the other 500 series might fit you better but this is the only one under budget. edit: just watched and this will be good for you

  • Sivga sv005 or sv007 which are more open (less bass) and both also have inflated prices on Amazon ca but are zeos's shp9500 replacement

  • Monoprice m560 which are slightly out of budget but are planar headphones

  • Lastly Philips SHP9500 if you could find them since they are discontinued
u/Dog1259 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'd go for some open back Sennheiser 559

u/OverExclamated · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Australian prices are a pita.

Closest I can come to your criteria - Superlux 668b

If you can swing a little bit more, you could also consider the AT AD700x or HD 559

u/Shadowedcross · 1 pointr/headphones

My main headphones recently stopped working properly so I'm looking for a replacement. I would use them for gaming with a priority on immersion, and as I already have a modmic I don't need a headset. I do watch a lot of videos and sometimes films, so them being good for that would be nice as well, but it isn't strictly the priority.

Budget - I'd like to spend no more than £100 but if necessary I'm willing to go a little over.

Source - My computer, a DAC/AMP would be nice but that would likely be outside of my budget.

Requirements for Isolation - Only going to be used at home, I can use some other headphones when quietness is needed.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized

Preferred tonal balance - I think I'd want balanced?

Past headphones - Well my headphones that just broke were the Creative Aurvana Live! and I'm currently using Koss Porta Pros until I get a replacement. I can't really say what I like about them.

Preferred Music - Lately I've been listening to classical, and I would say it's my favourite, but I do also listen to Rock and occasionally Electronic.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Can't honestly say I know, I felt like something was lacking with my old headphones but I don't have the technical knowledge to pinpoint it.

Location - UK, mainly use Amazon Prime for purchases but if I can get it somewhere else for cheaper then I will.

Other - So I spent a fair bit of last night researching this and the headphones that got mentioned a lot were the SHP9500, the Audio Technica AD series, HD558/598 and sometimes the DT770/990.

The annoying thing is, while the SHP9500 are fantastic value over in the US, like $50-70, they're equivalent to $155 here, at least on Amazon. Now, I could get the 990 for about the same price (£109 for 9500, £104 for DT990) but I would have to get a DAC/AMP to power them, which would put it way over my budget, and the SHP9500's have a detachable cable, which sounds fantastic right now. However, I don't want to be spending money on headphones that are worse than others I could get for the same price.

I've seen the 559's but I don't know what the difference between those and the 558's is, but if they're the same, then I could get them for £89.99 from Amazon.

I've heard mixed things about the AD series and the cheapest ones are still expensive for my budget at £119, again on Amazon.

Trying to decide between these is honestly difficult considering that most of the reviewers and resources are from the US and so they're basing the "bang-for-your-buck" value on the prices of the items over there, where they're a lot cheaper. I'm not saying I'd only pick from these, just that they're the headphones that are mentioned the most when trying to find good open-back headphones for gaming on a small budget. If any of you guys can suggest headphones that are just as good, if not better, but at a better price for my region then I'd happily consider them. Thanks.

u/demevalos · 1 pointr/headphones

The 559s are also on sale for $100 USD https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-559-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IIEKM

edit: although at that point, might as well just get the 579s

u/bubblesort33 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'd probably just get Sennheiser HD 518 headphones and get a somewhat well reviewed mic for $12. Almost always the first thing that breaks on gaming headsets is the mic, or it causes interference or some crap. At least you can replace it this way.

Anything with the word gaming in it is generally overpriced and lower quality than you can usually get for the money. And virtually every head set has the word "gaming" in it.

> I have a Ryzen 3600 otw and had a MSI B450 Tomahawk ordered as well, but upon hearing all of the issues with flashing BIOS on MSI boards I cancelled my order and ordered a Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro instead. I stupidly acted too quickly though, as I didn't even check if the board had BIOS flashback, and now I know it doesn't. It does, however, apparently have something called Q-Flash, which I have no experience with. With this being a fresh build, will I still be able to update the BIOS to be able to use my 3600, or do I need to cancel my order again while I still can? Please help me, it has been a very stressful day for me as far as motherboards are concerned. Thanks in advance.

> TL;DR - Can I update BIOS on a brand new Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro Wifi using Q-Flash to make it usable with my Ryzen 3600, or would I need to wait and apply for an AMD Boot Kit or get a different motherboard?

You could power them with that soundcard, which would be decent.

This would suit you much better with that sound card.

Budget - $100ish usd, flexible for notable quality increases

Source - Mainly phone/portables, some PC & home theater amp

Requirements for Isolation - Very little, mostly home use

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced w/ light bass preference, but kinda a newbie to this arena so unsure

Past headphones - Monoprice 8323, Monoprice 18515, Koss KSC75

Preferred Music - Alt. Rock, Musicals, Electronica, Film Scores, 90s revival & electro swing, Drum n' Bass, 80s New Wave.. kinda all over the map. Some favorites - Orbital, The Orb, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Shawn Mullins, Pentatonix, Autechre, Bjork, Danny Elfman, Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Ok Go, Michael Nesmith, Devo, Large piles of Demo Scene mod tracks.. (stopping here before this gets silly-long)

The Story - I've been pondering getting my first set of "real" headphones for a while now. I like the 8323's ok, but I know they are only a stepping stone. The 18515 sound a touch better but just are not comfy for me. All the sales flying around this weekend are getting my trigger finger itchy. Particularly the Philips SHP9500S for $52, the Sennheiser HD 559 on Amazon for $100, and maybe even the Monolith M560 for $150 or Monolith M565C at $183, if planar is really worth it.. or should I be aiming more at the old standbys of the ATH-M40x for $80. So many seeming good options, little ability to test any before dropping cash...

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Headphones can achieve most aspects of any given threshold of sound quality for cheaper than speakers.

Regarding open vs closed back, open back has a relaxed/loose quality to the sound while closed back sounds wound up/uptight. This also means open back can reproduce lower frequencies easier than closed back due to physics. Another important thing to note is that with open back headphones, you can hear outside the headphones perfectly fine, which means everyone in a certain distance from you (depending on your listening level) can hear your headphones perfectly fine too.

Regarding wireless, there's many existing solutions to wireless transmit audio from one location to another using adapters. Depending on the solution, the quality of your headphones, and your ears, you may or may not perceive quality loss and/or latency.

Regarding using a headset on both console and PC, you can buy a 2.5mm y-splitter cable for $5 anywhere online which will allow you to do so.

Finally, regarding my product recommendation, the Sennheiser HD 559, which barely fits in your budget, and has no mic which makes this a pair headphones. Unfortunately, no reputable audio company would make a serious endeavor into targeting the $50 market with quality sound. If you want to go that low, you're going to have to settle with Chinese sweatshop-level sound quality which ranges from merely acceptable to barely tolerable.
