responsible people will generally put in a special fake bullet that looks like super laser pointer. They'll zero that in at whatever yards (example certain 556 rounds go up and down hitting the same zero at 25/250m so you zero at 25 real quick and move out to 250m with live rounds) and then walk it back until it's zeroed at the range they want. That way while they may not hit the X they'll at least be on the paper and be safe. It really depends on the round if this step is necessary. I usually do it with 308/7.52x51 and up.

I don't know what the rules are for this sub, so this might get my comment deleted or me banned. But I am referring to a "Bullet" that has a laser in it. You can chamber the "round" in your rifle. I am not advocating this particular one. However, it was the first hit on Amazon when I searched for 308 laser sight.

I use the ones that look like a bullet
i figure its seated in there like an actual round and its lined up right. Saves me a few rounds, good for when your sighting in that expensive hunting ammo.
