When backpacking I use medium wool socks, like these but REI brand http://www.amazon.com/Smartwool-Mens-Hiking-Medium-Brown/dp/B0000DYNCD/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1370450489&sr=1-1
With wool socks, you usually see light medium and heavy options. I was always weary of the light ones, so I have stuck with medium for the past 3 years.
Liner socks are also good to wear under these. Liner socks are a thin synthetic sock that wicks the moisture from your foot towards the wool sock, I used these on a 20 mile hike this past weekend and they worked great, http://www.amazon.com/River-Wick-CoolMax-Liner-X-large/dp/B000V5CJ1C/
Also, really break in those boots, wear them as much as you can before you go on your trip. Blisters can really paralyze a hike.
edit: I wouldn't think the heavier ones would be a real problem. It is more of a personal preference, I just wouldn't recommend "light" ones. I'd say go out for a walk in your boots and heavy socks for an hour or two, see how it feels. But really, the cushion you would get from thicker socks might be a good thing.
